Page 2 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK By Fr. Terry Kerner With the coming of August we can begin to see the end of our work on the parish grounds. As mentioned a few weeks ago, we were able to transfer supervision and control of the storm system from Wayne County to the City of Dearborn. Wayne County cost us a great deal of cash and time and if they continued the expense would only get worse. With the city we can restore the grounds to the original park-like setting and save a great deal of money. What remains to be done to the nearly 3.5 acres of disturbed grounds is to hydro-seed a job best done, according to farmers, between August 15- September 15. Cooler nights and better chances of rain make this time optimal. Look for the Greening of St. Kateri in a few weeks! The final coat of asphalt will be applied to the north and south parking lots this coming week. Striping will also be done and we will all take some time getting used to the parking patterns. Please remember to respect the handicapped spaces and drop-off zones. If you are elderly and don t have a handicap sticker or plate, feel free to use the reserved spaces. The hot and humid weather can be tough on you. Take advantage of the better parking! An ongoing project is taking place in the courtyard between the new gathering space ( Resurrection Hall ) and the old parish hall ( the St. Francis Room ). The courtyard can be viewed from the St. Francis room only and will be an attractive tribute to many parishioner s favorite saint. The statue was donated by Fr. Walker a few years ago and brought here from St. Martha at the time of the merger. A very generous parishioner has donated the blue spruce and two Japanese maples as foundation planting. The hope is to have parishioners contribute some of their garden plants to the courtyard. If you would like to be a part of this project just contact the rectory or get in touch with Therese Terns, Jimmy Attard, or Pat Ayland. The statue of St. Martha and the memorial pavers have not been forgotten. We are waiting for cooler weather and some strong volunteers to help us set the statue which is quite heavy. (Like most of us, with age comes pounds!) Anyone with any interest in helping to move St. Martha, please let me know. Our parish patroness, St. Kateri, is the patron saint of ecology and the environment and it is appropriate that we respect and embrace this piece of the earth we call St. Kateri Parish. Over the years these acres will grow and mature and reflect the glory and beauty of God in our midst-not unlike our call as Christian persons. Have a beautiful week! FAMILY FAITH FORMATION By Grace Lakatos FAITH FORMATION It is hard to believe that the month of August has arrived. Hopefully, everyone has had a chance to enjoy the sunshine and the cool breezes. Somehow the Back to School sale signs and even a rare Halloween candy sighting have snuck up on all of us. Plans for the upcoming year have been made and it s time for the big reveal! Registration for Faith Formation Classes and Sacramental Preparation Classes has begun. Forms can be printed off the parish website under the link Parish Forms on the home page. Please write clearly and legibly, and fill in the entire form. Forms & registration fees can be returned to the parish office by mail or in the collection basket to my attention. Classes for Faith Formation begin on Saturday, September 19th at 4 PM Mass, followed by a meal and class. All Faith Formation classes will be held on Saturdays this year and will begin with 4 PM Mass. Confirmation Preparation Classes ( 7th & 8th grade) will begin on Saturday, September 12th at 9 AM. Reconciliation & First Eucharist Preparation Classes will begin in January & March, respectively. Save those pop cans & bottles for our 2nd Annual St. Leo s Soup Kitchen Pop Can Drive. Led once again by one of our young adults, Camilla Cascardo, volunteers will be collecting pop cans & bottles on Saturday, August 15th from 9 AM to 6 PM and Sunday, August 16th from 9 AM to 1 PM. Volunteers are needed to assist with taking donations from cars and with returning pop cans & bottles to local stores. Please help us to surpass last year s total of $726.70!. Once again this year, we need to Fill the Bus with school supplies for families at Nativity of Our Lord Parish in Detroit. Our collection will begin on Saturday, August 22nd and will continue until Sunday, September 6th. Basic items such as notebooks, folders, highlighters, backpacks, dictionaries, binders, calculators, Kleenex, Clorox wipes, paper towels, and hand sanitizer is needed. If you or someone you know have been baptized but have not received 1st Eucharist or Confirmation or are interested in learning about the Catholic faith, I invite you to register for the RCIA Program (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Collaborating together with Sacred Heart & St. Sebastian, our classes meet on Wednesday evenings from 7 PM to 9 PM and begin on September 23rd. If you have any questions about any of these events & programs or are interested in lending a helping hand, please contact me by phone at the parish office or by email at dre@stkateridearborn.org SCHOOL BELLS Sacred Heart Registration for the 2015-2016 School Year continues. LITURGY NOTES David Passeno The following is taken from an interview held with composer Rev. Michael Joncas, author of the hymn On Eagle s Wings. Q Many people feel that On Eagle s Wings is your best known song. Additionally, it is a frequent choice by families for funeral Masses. It is now published in a bilingual edition. This is probably in response to the changing face of the Catholic Church in the United States. It is also included in many Protestant hymnals. Can you speak about the influence that song has had on you and on worship? A Actually, in spite of the criticism it has received by Thomas Day and others, I am not ashamed of the piece and can still find it an impetus for prayer. I am amazed that God seems to use the piece to touch hearts at important milestones in life: funerals and memorial services, certainly, but also at baptisms and weddings. I ve learned something about the connotations attaching to a composition by discovering that it has special resonance (continued on page 4) AUGUST PRAYER REQUESTS Please remember in prayer Robert Alban Jackie Brennan Marcia Christensen Walter Christensen, Jr. Bernard DeBlois Linda Dreyer Irene Dzialak Dolores Hnot Kenneth Kenson Dylan Knightley Richard Lesmeister Connie Niemi Frank Pieresante Dennis Short Bill Sikora Henry Staunton Michele Southwick Noah Wernette Matt Zipple NOTE Remember that names will run for a given month. Page 4 for folks in the Air Force, and for some Native Americans, neither of whom were consciously in my intention during its composition. I think On Eagle s Wings has helped common sung worship by making a psalm text memorable, and by showing that a liturgical assembly can sing in a wide range. In an online poll sponsored by the National Association of Pastoral Musicians (NPM), On Eagle s Wings was the number one liturgical song that most fostered and nourished the respondent s life. This song is found as number 671 in our hymnals. A reminder to Lectors and Eucharistic Ministers Lectors Verify the pronunciation of names. We acknowledge the tabernacle only once for the First Reading after we are in place. Approach the altar for the Intentions when we say, I believe in one holy catholic church so there is a flow after Father s prayer. Stay up at the ambo while Father concludes the prayer after the Intentions. Eucharistic Ministers Please sit in pews by organ. Communion in row one, Blood in row two. Get in place on the Lamb of God The One s serve the side by Resurrection Hall. The Two s serve the side by the Sacristy. Begin by administering Communion to handicapped first. Body moves to the front pew to continue to give Communion. Wine stays on step. Everyone may go to his/her seat when finished except Body 1, who returns hosts to the tabernacle. Hope these reminders help with all the changes! Parish Notes HEAVEN & HELL TRIP August 1st was the deadline for registration! Turn in the registration form from the flyer and your check to Pat Ayland! This exciting trip is on Tuesday, September 1st, leaving from St. Kateri at 8:45 AM and returning by 6:30 PM. The tour is $68 and it includes round trip transportation on the Bianco motor coach, a visit Heaven Scent Herb Farm, lunch at Zukey Lake Tavern, a tour of Hell, Screams Ice Cream and Spicer s Orchard and Farm Market. The event in honor of the Virgin Mary takes place in early August each year on the campus of the Congregation of the Mother Co-Redemptrix in Carthage, MO. The Congregation organized the first Marian Days at its US headquarters in 1978 to celebrate the Immaculate Heart of Mary. About 1,500 Vietnamese Catholics from the area participated; in 2011, attendance reached 60,000. Thousands come from across the US, as well as Canada and Vietnam. Each day is highlighted by a large outdoor Mass, and offers opportunities for reconciliation and prayer. Mass is celebrated by many priests and religious. Although the celebrations are centered on liturgy, they also feature a number of other events. Diocesan groups set up tents to sell traditional Vietnamese food. Proceeds go to the parishes and charities. Each night, performers entertain crowds with both traditional and contemporary Vietnamese music. The celebration ends with a procession for Our Lady of Fatima. Two long firecrackers are set off, after which balloons tied to two flags (one for the Virgin Mary and the other for Vietnam) are released. THOUGHTS A little girl was diligently pounding away on her grandfather s word processor. She told him she was writing a story. What s it about?, he asked. I don t know, she replied. I can t read. SIGN IN A CHRISTIAN SHOE RE- PAIR WINDOW I will heel you, I will save your sole I will dye for you. CHURCH BLOOPERS The Pastor would appreciate it if the ladies of the congregation would lend him their electric girdles for the pancake breakfast next Sunday.
