But plenty of activities are in store right here at Congregation B nai Torah during the next few weeks for congregants of all ages. A Sunday School Open House is set for the morning of Sunday, Aug. 17. All current members, as well as prospective families with schoolage children, are welcome to attend. introducing younger people to the B nai Torah family. If anyone knows someone with kids, we d like for them to be invited to the open house, he said. Helen Farb, who oversees the religious school, said the open house program will have a Shabbat theme and include baking, crafts, storytelling, games, and music. The children will make Challah covers, and the rabbi will talk about what Shabbat means and teach songs, she said. I hope families will come, if they have children or grandchildren interested in a progressive conservative congregation. Maybe some families have recently moved to the area. Not for me summer tends to be my busiest time of year and it is certainly flying by. Many of our Sisterhood members are vacationing, others are preparing for children or grandchildren going off to college, some are just relaxing, and many others volunteering. As we look at the calendar, we realize that September is right around the corner. To us this means we return to a busy schedule celebrating and observing our many holidays. Selichot kicks off the High Holidays with an amazing program: Peri Smilow in concert and Selichot Experience (5:00 Workshop, 8:30 Havdallah and concert, refreshments, 10:00 Selichot). I look forward to seeing all our members attend. We will begin another year of religious school and other congregational events, including our first general Sisterhood meeting of the new year on September 11th. Stay tuned for more information on this meeting and its program. As the NEW YEAR begins please think about joining sisterhood if you are not a member. If you are a member, please attend our wonderful programs. If the programs do not interest you I encourage you to reach out to our board with your suggestions. As for the adults, the temple s Sisterhood is sponsoring an Italian Shabbat dinner on Friday Aug. 22 at 6 p.m. The menu is expected to include spaghetti and meatballs, salad, bread, a vegetable and dessert. The cost is $15. The Sisterhood usually sponsors three or four Shabbat dinners a year. Meanwhile, the Men s Club is planning another temple-wide event, an end-of-summer picnic on the afternoon of Sunday, Sept. 14, possibly at Bicentennial Park in Ormond-by-the-Sea if the site can be booked. Stuart Amols is overseeing the planning of the welcome back from summer event. There will be free hot dogs, soda, and everyone will be encouraged to bring a side dish or dessert, he said of the end-of-season social event. In August 2009, Rose Grace joined the music department at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach as an assistant professor of piano. As a full-time faculty member, she also is involved with the music outreach program. Rose Grace holds a BM in Piano Performance and Musicology from the Oberlin Conservatory, OH; an MA in Musicology from the University of Chicago, IL; and a Doctorate in Piano Performance and Literature from the Eastman School of Music, NY.

There are moments in life that define us. We don t always get to pick and choose them. They come, often unexpectedly, linger for a time, and then move on. This is one such moment. Speak up now unambiguously, crediblywhile literally millions of Israelis live from one alarm to another. Don t worry. There will be other occasions to voice your ongoing concerns about, and criticisms of, Israel. You know that no other country, neither America nor the European nations nor anyone else, would tolerate volleys of deadly rockets fired at them with the aim of causing murder and mayhem. If you are not aware, you should know that Israeli hospitals, in response to more than 12,000 rockets over the past 14 years alone, continue to provide life-saving medical care for residents of the Gaza Strip. If you read the Hamas Charter and understand the group s goal is not to end Israeli s settlement policy, but Israel, period. Hamas uses civilians in Gaza, including children, as human shields. I hope you are aware that Hamas opposes any Palestinian effort to reach peace with Israel, and will do everything possible to sabotage efforts in that direction. Prioritize your concerns, and, whatever your other issues with Israel might be, its ability to end the deadly attacks now tops the list. We here at the Federation through your donations are proud that the children in Sderot and Nitvot, Israel had our three bomb shelters to go to when the rockets came. You are aware that in 2005 Israel left Gaza, lock, stock, and barrel, in 2005, giving this strip of land the first chance in its history to govern itself. What did they do, but create suicide attacks. No one before Israel, not Egypt, not the British, not the Ottomans, no one, offered Gaza the opportunity that Israel did to chart its own destiny. Please continue to support Israel. This little country who has continually been a benefit to the world, still receives unprecedented criticism. Don't stand idly by - speak up and write about the injustices heaped upon her. This war has been costly and we are sending out an appeal to help Israel in her time of need. The reform and conservative movement have come together with the Jewish Federations in all cities to bring relief to Israel. Please give generously and 100% of all funds donated will go to people in need. Thank you donors for helping the Jewish Federation assist so many people who are in dire need. The Jerry Doliner Food Bank has been a godsend to so many good people. Our school supply program is legendary. Thank you to Abram & Kaplan Foundation for offering the matching grant of $15,000 if we match it in July. As I am writing this in July, I am not quite at the $15,000 mark, but I am confident we will reach our goal. The counselors are the ones who know best which child needs the help. We sent out a urgent appeal to the donors who had contributed before, asking them to contribute what they could afford and were amazed at the fantastic response we received. The High Holidays will be soon be here and we are asking each Temple s Congregants for their High Holiday food appeal to purchase only many of one item. Toilet paper is a must have commodity as well as peanut butter, we are asking you to supply us with these two items. Ray Max works very hard keeping the Food Pantry in operation and he feels that if each Congregation will bring only one of many items, his job will be made easier. We realize that many of you have your own hardships, but thank G-d you have always managed to give back to the less fortunate among us and we feel blessed that you care. The Men s Club is a vehicle for expanding the role of the synagogue in the lives of men, and the role of men in the life of the synagogue. Our mission is to respond to the needs of men in our congregation through social, cultural, educational, and community activities. We welcome you to join and be as active or as non-active as you desire. For some of you it may mean just supporting our initiatives financially by sending in your dues. For others it may mean joining and getting involved by attending meetings, making new connections and helping to make our events successful. Your membership and participation play an important part in our goal to continue our efforts to support the Synagogue and the community in whatever way is needed. The club held its annual organizational meeting on June 9 th, and in addition to electing officers for the upcoming year, proposed several events for this fall. The club voted to host a Welcome Back Picnic for synagogue members and their families on September 14 th and a Dinner Dance on November 8 th. Mark your calendars now for these two major social events. We recognize that there are many other types of events and activities congregants would like to see and we are always open to volunteer speakers and your suggestions for additional programs. This is a first for our temple in its 16 year history. Being an original member when the temple was in its infancy at the Senior Center, her husband Stuart was the first president. Bari was the first Religious School Director. The first High Holy Day services were held at the Trails Clubhouse. In 1998, CBT moved to the Renaissance Center on Nova Road. Bari met her husband to be, Stuart on a blind date. Her employer at the time and his employer were friends and made a match. Bari was a paralegal residing in Jericho, N.Y. and Stuart lived in New Hampshire. They dated 6 months and were married in 1986. They have three children: David (25), Danielle (22), and Kyla (19). The Amols family moved to Dothan, Alabama in 1989. They commuted from there to Cottondale, Florida which is located in the Panhandle. There they worked at a t-shirt factory. The family then moved to the Daytona Beach area in 1996 where Stuart commuted for a year. They (all five of them) resided in a one bedroom apartment with Bogie, a German Shepard mixed breed. They soon moved to a two bedroom apartment. Bari was born in Glen Cove, Long Island, New York but attended school in Plainview, N.Y. and college in Oakdale, N.Y. She likes to read, plays Mah Jongg, and is a member of Hadassah. For the past 15 years, Bari has worked as a cashier in Tomoka Elementary School Cafeteria.

As a regular reader of Israeli newspapers, I have to share with you that nearly the entire Israeli spectrum of opinion feels that this war is necessary. Not only necessary, but in some quarters, it started right on time. In previous conflicts with Hamas, the Israeli military never encountered situations which surprised them. This conflict has revealed that Hamas was preparing for the slaughter of Jewish civilians though their tunnel network scheduled for Rosh Hashanah. It is hard for the vast spectrum of Israelis to put their compassion for Palestinian civilians ahead of danger to Israeli civilians. Still, Jewish people are unaccustomed to advocating war. Each time the IDF engages with terrorists, who plan their strategy based on sacrificing innocent civilians from their own population, innocent civilians do indeed get killed. After the first innocent civilian is killed, in order to prevent harm to Israelis, Jews all over the world are forced to harden our hearts; when we do so, we create tension within ourselves. We all remember during Passover Seder, that we remove drops of wine, the symbol of joy, as we recite the Ten Plagues because our joy at victory is reduced by the suffering of innocent Egyptians. This is not the first time that Israel has faced some form of Arab madness. Perhaps, I can remind you of a quote from Golda Meir, We can forgive the Arabs for killing our children. We cannot forgive them for forcing us to kill their children. We will only have peace with the Arabs when they love their children more than they hate us. And so, Jews all around the world will pray for the madness to end, for Israel's safety, for the Palestinian people to turn their resources toward benefiting their own children, and for lasting peace.
