St. Charles Borromeo Church July 31, 2016 Dear Parishioners of St. Charles, Thank you for all the prayerful support you showed me during my time in the seminary, and I am grateful for your outpouring of kindness and love on the occasion of my priestly ordination. My ministry will take me many places, I am sure, but St. Charles I will always consider home. God Bless, Fr. Kevin Klonowski NEWS FROM KRAKÓW, POLAND CZEŚĆ! That s Hello in Polish. We pilgrims are having a wonderful time! Our teens and young adults are the absolute best! After leaving beautiful Italy this past Tuesday, we continued to have lots of fun and memorable experiences while touring beautiful cities and historical sites we visited throughout Poland Krakow, Auschwitz & Wadowice, the home of St. John Paul II. We are now in the heart of our World Youth Day activities. This 31 st Catholic World Youth Day is the largest youth event in the world. It was started by Saint John Paul II in 1985. On Thursday, July 28 th, we welcomed Pope Francis to World Youth Day, and we tried to catch a glimpse of him as he traveled through the streets of Kraków in his Popemobile. On Friday evening, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims participated in the Stations of the Cross with Pope Francis. On Saturday evening, Pope Francis will arrive by helicopter. He will lead several million pilgrims in an overnight candlelit vigil of prayer, song, and Eucharistic Adoration. After camping out all night under the stars, the World Youth Day experience concludes with the Papal Mass on Sunday, July 31 st. Pope Francis will then announce when and where the next World Youth Day will be held -- to the delight of the crowd! All of us pilgrims carry your prayer intentions with us. Thank you for your generosity that has made this wonderful experience possible for each of us. But most of all, thanks for your prayers. Please continue to pray for our safe return. Our plane is scheduled to arrive home in Cleveland on Monday, August 1 st. So, see you soon! We will all have lots and lots of wonderful stories and beautiful photos to share. DO WIDZENIA ( Goodbye in Polish) for now. ~ Love, Sr. Denise Marie, Fr. Ryan & Fr. Terry Merici Chapel Summer is a time for fun and relaxation schedules not so hectic. We all think we have time to prepare for eternity. How much time do we have? We don t know, do we? Try and make room in your schedule to visit Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament in Merici Chapel No time like the present. This weekend we welcome Father Greg Schmitt, CSsR, a Redemptorist priest, who will tell of his order s missionary work and ask us for our help. So there will be a second collection at Mass this weekend. Father Schmitt is a native of Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin. He was ordained in 1969. The Redemptorists currently staff missions in Brazil and Nigeria. This is also a Fifth Sunday of the month. For many years, we have had a second collection for our parish St Vincent de Paul Society. To avoid three collections this weekend, please place your SVdeP envelope in the first collection. Our counters will separate and account for them. You will find an August Parish Activities Calendar in this bulletin. Please clip-and-keep that Calendar. Let me put in a word of personal recommendation for you to attend THE FEST, scheduled for next Sunday, August 7, at the Center for Pastoral Leadership, 28700 Euclid Avenue in Wickliffe. This is an outstanding experience: great music, solid witness, good food, lots of entertainment with about 40,000 Catholics from throughout the Diocese. And there is no admission charge Gotta Bar of Soap? St Malachi Parish Ministry to the Homeless asks for bars of soap, large or small. Please leave them in the Soap Boxes in the church lobbies. The booths are down, the tents are folded, the lights are stored, and all the Carnival gear is stowed away for next year. But I could not let this month end without a Great Big Tip of the St Charles Appreciation Hat to the 2016 Carnival Committee: Mike Nowak, Chair, ably assisted by co-chairs Dom Pillin, Brian Raymont, Tim Ungvarsky, Tom Weinreich, Tom Holzheimer, Rich Marrone, Jane Denton, Dale Kline, Sean Brennan, Lynda Mackulin, Brenda Sutton, Chris and Kris Bentley, Jacob Maier, Jacob Graham, Joe McCafferty, Joe Bonvissuto, Maria Barsa, and Melissa Koenig. Thank you, as well, to all who bought/sold tickets, worked the booths, prepared and served great food/drink, accomplished set-up and take-down in record time, worked bingo, ran prizes, dealt cards, served ice cream, wine and beer, kept things tidy, pleased little kids, counted money, or patronized the Carnival on one or more nights. Carnival 2016 is one for the books. So thanks to all of you for making it happen! Carnival planning begins about fifty weeks in advance. The Committee takes a close look at the records for the Carnival just concluded and then makes a list of recommendations for the next year. We then meet throughout the year; bands are booked, some features are dropped, other new ideas are adopted. In March, the car is purchased. Tickets go out in mid-may. We advertise for two months and then celebrate for five days in mid-july. After a little investigation, we think St Charles Carnival, now looking toward our eighty-sixth year, might be the longest sustained summer festival in the area. There were 800+ parishioners who worked the Carnival. More than 500 individuals worked each evening. Carnival 2017 dates? Well, since you asked, the answer is: Wednesday to Sunday July 12, 13, 14, 15, 16! Want to join the Catholic Church? Know someone who does? Call Father Ryan Mann at 440-884-3030 for details about our 2016-2017 Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA). Mondays, 7:00 till 8:30pm, beginning in September.

Gotta Bar of Soap? St Malachi Parish has long sponsored a ministry to the homeless in the Angle district of Cleveland at West 25 th and Detroit. In addition to the meals and clothing St Malachi provides daily, they also offer showers for those who live on the streets. St Malachi tells us that they could use bars of soap. If you have an extra bar or two of soap, regular size or even the small bars of soap offered by hotels and motels, please bring them to church, over the next few weeks, and leave them in the Soap Boxes in the church lobbies. Help My Least Brothers and Sisters! $500 worth of your choice of Gift Certificates Waterford Honey Crystal Bowl & Vase Set 3 rd Prize Hand-Crafted Quilt Try your luck and help support The Guild!! GUIDE BOOK & DIRECTORY ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITY We are in the process of updating our annual Guide Book & Directory for the Parish. This book will be the Who, What, Where, When, Why and How of our parish. The book is being provided at no cost to our Church, including the mailing to each family, and again is being subsidized by local businesses that advertise in it. If you own or manage a business and would like to find out about advertising in our book, please call the Parish Office (440)884-3030. Recent survey results by Guide Book Publishing show that 92.1% of families would rather patronize a Guide Book & Directory advertiser over a non-advertiser. It "will pay" to advertise in our new Guide Book & Directory. THEOLOGY ON TAP WEST Every second Wednesday of the month, young adults in their 20 s and 30 s are invited to gather at Beachcliff Tavern (19245 Detroit Ave., Rocky River) at 7PM to hear an engaging speaker reflect on some aspect of the faith while enjoying a pint and some tasty food! Each night kicks off with a social, which includes complementary appetizers and a cash bar, followed by a speaker. Admission is only $5. Our next speaker on Wednesday, August 10, will be Mark and Christi Tripodi, founders of Cornerstone of Hope, a ministry that helps people who are grieving the loss of a loved one, who will be speaking to us about the mystery of suffering and their own personal experience with loss in their talk entitled, Pain to Purpose: Tragedy to Triumph. Theology on Tap is a great way for young adults to go deeper in their faith and connect with other young Catholics in the area. For more information, please contact Fr. Tim Roth (440.333.2133 frtim@samparish.org). KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Brother Knights please remember that this Sunday at 3:30pm we will be having the Fifth Sunday Rosary in the Chapel.
