Liturgy At Holy Trinity Lutheran Church December 6, 2015 + 10:30 a.m. Second Sunday of Advent

Prelude Help Us Create SACRED SPACE by powering down Please do not use cell phones and other electronic devices. Gathering The ringing of the meditation bowl calls us to silence, centering and reflection as we prepare for worship. Following the introduction to the hymn, please stand and face the font at the rear of the nave. Turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. Incense, used in Christian and Jewish worship since ancient times, is part of our multi-sensory liturgy. The assembly, gospel book, and table all signs of Christ's presence among us are honored with incense, representing the rising of our prayers and praise. O Antiphon O Key of David The O Antiphons have been cherished for Christians for centuries. Each antiphon uses a title for Christ taken from the Hebrew scriptures, and each one is the basis for a stanza of the beloved Advent hymn, O, come, o, come, Emmanuel. Blessing of the Advent Wreath The key and scepter are traditional symbols of kingly power and authority. Christ, the anointed one, is the heir of David and possessor of the kingdom. Jesus himself also made use of this symbol, showing the prophetic relationship of the earthly kingdom of David to the kingdom of God. In the closing petition we look to Jesus to unlock the fetters of sin that keeps us tightly chained. It is he who frees us from our captivity. All sing: O come, O Key of David, come, and open wide our heav'nly home; make safe the way that leads on high, and close the path to misery. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to you, O Israel. We praise you, O God, for this circle of light that marks our days of preparation for Christ s advent. Kindle within us the fire of your Spirit, that we may be light shining in the darkness. Enlighten us with your grace that we may welcome others as you have welcomed us. Grant this through Christ our Lord whose coming is certain and whose day draws near. Amen [2]

#249 On Jordan s Banks the Baptist s Cry Assembly response: We do. Renunciation of Evil Baptism Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our god. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Gathering Hymn Presentation Profession of Faith Thanksgiving at the Font [3]

Baptism After the baptism the song is sung twice. Text: Galatians 3:27, International Commission on English in the Liturgy 1969 ICEL; Music [BAPTIZED IN CHRIST], Howard Hughes, b. 1930 1977 ICEL. Clothing with a White Robe Laying on of Hands Signing with the Cross Welcome Presentation of a Candle Presider: Let us welcome the newly baptized. We welcome you into the body of Christ and the mission we share; join us in giving thanks and praise to God and bearing God s creative and redeeming word to all the world. Greeting Prayer of the Day First Reading Malachi 3:1-4 The presiding minister bows toward the assembly which is the body of Christ and the primary symbol of God s presence in the liturgy. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Let us pray Amen ~ be seated ~ Word The passage from Malachi is chosen as an example of the religious expectation that a messenger would urge the people to prepare for the messiah. Christians hear Malachi s messenger, like the voice of John the Baptist, speaking also to us, calling us to keep the covenant of our baptism and to purify our lives from sin. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. [4]

Refrain: Tone: Canticle Luke 1:68-79 Setting: Carolyn Jennings The choir sings the refrain and the assembly repeats. The choir and assembly sing alternate verses. Blessed are you, Lord, the God of Israel, you have come to your people and set them free. You have raised up for us a mighty Savior, born of the house of your servant David. Refrain Through your holy prophets, you promised of old to save us from our enemies, from the hand of all who hate us, to show mercy to our forebears, and to remember your holy covenant. This was the oath your swore to our father Abraham: to set us free from the hands of our enemies, free to worship you without fear, holy and righteous before you, all the days of our life. Refrain And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to pre- pare the way, to give his people knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of their sins. In the tender compassion of our God the dawn from on high shall break upon us, to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shad- ow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Refrain [5]

Second Reading Philippians 1:3-11 Paul s joy comes not from holiday preparation but through his faith in God s grace, compassion, and evidence of righteousness. As Paul awaits Christ s second coming, we join him by also meeting Christ in holy communion and anticipating the celebration of Christ s birth. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation Setting: John Ferguson Stand to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. Prepare the way of the Lord. All flesh shall see the salvation of God. (Luke 3:4, 6) Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Gospel Luke 3:1-6 As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. Sermon Silence Hymn of the Day By listing authorities in the Roman Empire and in Jerusalem s temple staff, and by setting John the Baptist next to Isaiah near the Jordan, Luke presents a detailed setting for Jesus adult life and ministry. Christ stands within human history, fulfilling in unexpected ways the religious expectations of his people. Also today, the body of Christ lives in the real world and shows to all flesh God s salvation. We are to reorder the world and build a royal triumphal highway for the coming of the Lord, in the present and the future. The holy gospel according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. ~ be seated ~ Following the sermon there is a time of silence for reflection and quiet meditation. Our liturgy is not only made up of words, gestures and music, but also moments of silence. ~ please stand ~ #264 Prepare the Royal Highway [6]

After each petition: Let us pray. Come, Lord Jesus. The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. ~ be seated ~ Meal We invite newcomers to fill out the yellow welcome slip and place it in the offering plate. Please note more about offerings on the inside back cover. Today s loose offering is designated for The Night Ministry. Checks and envelope offerings support Holy Trinity s overall ministry unless designated otherwise. #256 Comfort, Comfort You My People ~ please stand ~ Prayers of Intercession Peace The assembly is invited to share God s peace with one another saying, Peace be with you, or similar words. Offering Offertory Hymn Great Thanksgiving Dialogue and preface The thanksgiving includes the following: Holy, Holy [7]

Eucharistic Prayer The thanksgiving uses the seven O Antiphon images for Christ: Wisdom, Lawgiver, Branch of Jesse's tree, Key of David, Dawning Day, Sovereign, and Emmanuel. The Lord s Prayer As a sign of openness to the divine presence, you may join the presider in praying the Our Father with the ancient gesture of extended hands. Wait for the Lord Sung three times. Please remain standing. [8]

~ be seated ~ All are welcome at Christ's table, including children. Bread is received in the hands. Wine is received either by drinking from the (silver) common cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the second (glass) cup. Gluten-free wafers are available from the presiding minister. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing, keeping your hands extended over your chest. For those unable to consume either wine or bread, communion is received fully in either element alone. And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together; for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it. (Isaiah 40:5) ~ please stand ~ #250 Blessed be the God of Israel Sending Having heard the word and shared the eucharist, we are sent to live our baptism through words and deeds, making known the love of Christ, and working for justice and peace in our families, communities, and world. Turn to face the cross as it recesses, you may bow as it passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. Communion Communion Anthem And the glory of the Lord George F. Händel (1685-1759) Silence Prayer Blessing Sending Hymn Go in peace. Prepare the way of the Lord. Thanks be to God! Sending Postlude On Jordan s banks the Baptist s cry Malcolm Archer (b. 1952) [9]

Cocktails & Carols December 19 HTLoop Following worship on Dec 19 here at HTLoop, join us for Cocktails & Carols. + Suggested donation: $10 Commemorations for the Week Nicholas Dec 6 Little is known about Nicholas, except that he was a bishop in present-day Turkey. According to legend, he was famous for his giving to the poor, and so has become a symbol of anonymous gift-giving. Ambrose Dec 7 While a governor of northern Italy, Ambrose was elected bishop of Milan on the same day he was baptized. He was a famous preacher, a writer of hymns we still sing today, and helped lead St. Augustine to faith.
