everyone is asked to join our parish school s Open House & Parish Appreciation Day after the 10a Mass on Sunday, 27 January (11.30-12.30)! A Parish Family of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston Parish Clergy Office hours: Stay connected: Our Mission Welcome! Are you new?

A letter from our Pastor Dear Friends in Christ, This Tuesday at St Mary s, Bishop Guglielmone will have a town hall meeting with Catholics in the Upstate about the recent abuse crisis in the Church, and I encourage you to attend. As the revelations about the infidelity of bishops and cardinals and their coverups dominated the news cycle for the last several months, remember that I told you: this is just the tip of the iceberg and we must be prepared for more of this sort of thing. There was a priest in an article who was asked, But why didn t you say anything?, to which he responded, If I told you, you wouldn t have believed me. There has reigned a tendency for far too long, not just in the Church, but in society also, to feel that an institution has to be protected at all costs by not airing dirty laundry and resolving things quietly. Now, discretion is a virtue, but it can also be abused as a cloak for incredibly destructive behavior. If there is a positive outcome to what has been gripping our Church, it is this: more and more people are beginning to talk about things that they would never dare to talk about before. Abuse in various forms, mental illness, financial and emotional burdens: these topics, which once were spoken of in hushed tones, if at all, are now the subject of endless conversations in the real and virtual worlds. Many times this process can bring validation to those who have suffered, as well as healing to hearts that have been weighed down by their own and others actions. The Church, in particular, can learn to be a safe space for that grueling, but fruitful process. Now, of course, there is a flip side to this, too. The very real struggles of many people are being eclipsed by an outrage culture in which purveyors of all sorts of agendas don t think twice about loudly proclaiming half-truths, outright lies and accusations to destroy others they don t like or agree with. Add to that our human propensity to make assumptions, judge rashly and conflate entire narratives about people and situations, and you have the recipe for a poisonous cocktail that can kill individuals mental health, relationships and institutions. This evil world of sin has become incredibly toxic, and I think that people of good will are reeling in pain, confusion and a desire for peace and justice. I wish I had more answers for you, and as so many of you share your stories with me on a daily basis, I can only bring you to the source of our true hope: Jesus Christ. He is the ultimate answer to every question and any doubt. By conforming ourselves ever more closely to Him, we can be the change we want to see in the world. But it means that we have to take our Catholic Christian identity serious, and cultivate a life of holiness. And that life happens by means of the way of the cross. Let s not only be a Church that listens, but also one that does not fear to challenge, one that seeks justice, and one that shows mercy. That is the way of our Founder, and that is how we receive the gift of eternal life. Prayer for Catholic Schools Week by Fr. Christopher Smith Eternal and Life-giving Father, you have given the parish dedicated to your Son, the Prince of Peace, as its principal ministry for the handing on the Catholic faith a school to raise up children in the way of truth, goodness and beauty. We ask you, as we celebrate Catholic Schools Week, to bless our school with a vibrant sense of its spiritual identity and intellectual mission, with an increase of enrollment to the glory of your kingdom, and for sustainable financial and administrative initiatives. We ask that you set apart for your divine plan all of the students, faculty and staff of our school, the parents and volunteers, and all who call Prince of Peace their spiritual home. We humbly beseech you, King of Love, that our community may assist each of your children to reach their fullest potential on this earth and prepare us all for everlasting joy in paradise. We ask this through Jesus Christ Our Lord, and in the unity of the Holy Spirit, under the intercession of Our Lady, the Queen of Peace and Seat of Wisdom, St Thomas Aquinas, St Joseph and our guardian angels.
