Liturgy At Holy Trinity Lutheran Church June 12, 2016 + 9:30 a.m. Lectionary 11

Help Us Create SACRED SPACE by powering down Please do not use cell phones and other electronic devices. GATHERING Prelude Rondeau and Air Henry Purcell (1659-1695) Gathering Hymn Greeting Prayer of the Day First Reading 2 Samuel 11:26 12:10, 13-15 The ringing of the meditation bowl calls us to silence, centering and reflection as we prepare for worship. Following the introduction to the hymn, please stand and face the rear of the nave. Turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. #823 Praise the Lord! O Heavens The presiding minister bows toward the assembly which is the body of Christ and the primary symbol of God s presence in the liturgy. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Let us pray Amen ~ be seated ~ WORD The Elijah miracle is set next to the narrative of Luke 7 to show that Jesus stands in the tradition of the miracle-working prophets, who speak God s word with power and who can save us from death. Christian tradition came to say far more about Jesus than that he was a great prophet, but as such he speaks God s word Let there be... and so creates life in the world. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. [2]

Refrain: Blest is the one whose sin is forgiv n, and whose wrongs are put far away. Happy is the one free of guilt, whose spirit is pure, whose words are the truth. Refrain When I refused to confess all my sin, my body wasted away. Day and night my sins were before me; my strength dried up like the summer s heat. Refrain Then I declared my sin to the Lord, and my heavy guilt I confessed; God forgave all my transgressinons; my sin and guilt were taken away. Refrain When the faithful have floods rushing down, those same floods are beyond their reach. The Lord will be their hiding place, salvation s joy shall be their song. Refrain Paul writes that we are the sinners who, seeking to be right with God, have received God s grace through our faith in Christ s justifying death. Reading this passage on this Sunday makes it seem as if Paul was writing a commentary on 2 Samuel and Luke. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Stand to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. Psalm 32:1-7 Setting: Hal H. Hopson The cantor first sings the refrain and the assembly repeats. The cantor sings the verses. Second Reading Galatians 2:15-21 Gospel Acclamation The cantor sings first and the assembly repeats. [3]

Gospel Luke 7:36 8:3 As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. Sermon Silence Hymn of the Day Prayers of Intercession Peace The assembly is invited to share God s peace with one another saying, Peace be with you, or similar words. Offering Offertory Hymn We too are the woman who has sinned much, who comes to honor the body of Christ, and who has faith in God s salvation. The body of Christ that we now honor is incarnate in the bodies of those around us. In this biblical excerpt, women are both sinners and saints. Omit any reference to the medieval suggestion that the anointing woman was Mary Magdalene: there is no need to perpetuate this error. The holy gospel according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Hallelujah (sung as above) ~ be seated ~ Following the sermon there is a time of silence for reflection and quiet meditation. Our liturgy is not only made up of words, gestures and music, but also moments of silence. ~ please stand ~ #580 How Clear Is Our Vocation, Lord After each petition: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. ~ be seated ~ #539 Abide, O Dearest Jesus ~ please stand ~ MEAL If this is your first time, or if you have been attending awhile and would like to get to know us better, please fill out the welcome slip in the pew and place it in the offering plate. Today s loose offering is designated for The Lakeview Pantry. Checks and envelope offerings support Holy Trinity s overall ministry unless designated otherwise. [4]

Great Thanksgiving Dialogue and preface The thanksgiving includes the following: Holy, Holy Eucharistic Prayer Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. [5] Memorial Acclamation The Lord s Prayer As a sign of openness to the divine presence, you may join the presider in praying the Our Father with the ancient gesture of extended hands.

Lamb of God Please remain standing. Communion Communion Anthem Die Welt mit allen Königreichen (From Cantata 59) J. S. Bach (1685-1750) Silence Prayer ~ be seated ~ All are welcome at Christ's table, including children. Bread is received in the hands. Wine is received either by drinking from the (silver) common cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the second (glass) cup. Gluten-free wafers are available from the presiding minister. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing, keeping your hands folded over your chest. For those unable to consume either wine or bread, communion is received fully in either element alone. ~ please stand ~ The world with all its kingdoms, The world with all its glory cannot be compared with this glory with which our God makes us glad: that his throne is within our hearts and there he dwells as in heaven. Ah God, how blessed we are now, how blessed we shall then be when after this time on earth we shall live with you in heaven. [6]

SENDING Having heard the word and shared the eucharist, we are sent to live our baptism through words and deeds, making known the love of Christ, and working for justice and peace in our families, communities, and world. Turn to face the cross as it recesses, you may bow as it passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. Blessing Sending Hymn Thankful hearts and voices raise Text: John W. Arthur (1922-1980). Music: Richard W. Hillert (b. 1923). Both 1978, 1995 Augsburg Fortress Go in peace. Serve the Lord. Thanks be to God! Sending Postlude Allein Gott in der Höh ( All glory be to God on high ) Timothy Albrecht (b. 1950) Following the liturgy, several things happen simultaneously: some folks greet one another and converse; others listen to the organ postlude; and others move to the front of the church for a time of refreshments and social time.
