June 2017 7 Sivan 6 Tammuz Volume 25 Issue 6 Torah Times Together we honor G-d and Torah, Promote Spiritual Growth, and Strengthen Our Community Special Points of Interest: Picture Review pg. 2 CBT Co-President s Message pg. 3 When it comes to high school and college graduations, the end is really just the beginning. That s the case with three young congregants who grew up attending services and religious school classes at Temple B nai Torah. Please join in and congratulate the academic accomplishments of Kyla Amols, Tommy Morrissey and Brielle Goldberg as they begin their next chapters in life. Kyla Amols Graduated: Florida State University. Major: Theater. Immediate plans: Move to New York City in August and find a job in theater production, possibly as an executive assistant in casting or an assistant production manager. I d do pretty much anything. I m open to see what comes my way, she said. I m excited. A bunch of my friends and family members live up to there Tommy Morrissey Graduated: Florida State University. Major: Actuarial science. Immediate plans: Travelling to Ireland in June on a vacation with his father before returning to Tallahassee to start a fulltime job at Capital Health Plan, a health care provider, where he interned. He will be working in the field of Medicare. Actuarial science minimizes future risk by offering predictions of what will happen. Bulletin Story by Ray Weiss Brielle Goldberg Graduated: Flagler/Palm Coast High School. School in fall: Winthrop University (Rock Hill, S.C.) Major: International business. Highlight of high school: Definitely doing marching band for four years, the football games and yearly competitions, said Brielle, who played the sousaphone. By the way, her graduation ceremony took place exactly five years after her bat mitzvah. Page 7 Torah Times Sisterhood News by Barbara Goldstein The end of another year is upon us Sisterhood has kept up its tradition of supporting the Congregation by its fundraising activities. Our largest one the Year Book is now being put together. We need your Jewels and Memorials (along with your check) sent to us by the end of June. But, we also need your help in getting ads from businesses you frequent. If you need forms to take with you to solicit these ads, just give the office a call. We ll also be working on having other fund-raising activities for the coming year. Also, please remember, that we need congregants to help us out with Friday night Onegs and Saturday Kiddishes. Without additional help there may come a time when we won t be able to have these two end-of-service events. Our end-of-year meeting was held at Leanhs Restaurant and the new Executive and Board was announced. Page 8 Torah Times Jewish Federation of Volusia and Flagler Counties 470 Andalusia Avenue-Ormond Beach, Florida 32174 (386) 672-0294 The School Supply Project needs funds. Please, Please donate at least $25.00 to purchase a quality backpack with school supplies appropriate for their age group for disadvantaged children in Volusia & Flagler Counties. The supplies and backpack retail for $80.00 and it cost us $25.00. This is a mitzvah. The Federation doesn't choose the students, the counselors of each school know best who is in need. Please make your check out to School Supply Kits, 470 Andalusia Avenue, Ormond Beach, Fl 32174 or use Pay Pal or Razoo for fedvf@aol.com. For the last number of years we have supplied 7,000 students each year and in the last 21 years - 95,000 students. The Humanitarian Award given to Gale Lemerand and Gloria Max by the Florida State Elks on April 22nd was a fantastic event. Over 45 members of the Jewish Community joined the delightful party at the Daytona Beach Hilton. The roaring 20's costumes were magnificent and the jazz band from Epcot with the Red Hot Momma singer was enjoyed by all. It was especially nice that Gloria's family her brother, sister-in-law and cousin came in from Toronto, Canada and her brother-in-law from Charleston, West Virginia and last but not least her grandson came in from Madison, Wisconsin. On April 30th, the Holocaust Observance at Temple Beth-el was very well received by nearly 300 in attendance. The speaker Gene Klein, a holocaust survivor intrigued everyone. We heard from a lot of folks that it was the best one yet. Thank you to the volunteers, especially Marta Weisberg who baked. On May the 7th, the Major Gifts dinner at Greektown Taverna was enjoyed by all. The speaker Luis Fleishman gave us a history of the Peace Process and the food and the staff were excellent. Hold the date: On June 8th, the Annual Meeting will be held at Temple Beth-el at 7:00 p.m. Our guest speaker Dr. Jeffrey F. Addicott is currently a full Professor of Law and the Director of Terrorism Law at St. Mary's University School of Law at San Antonio, Texas. He will speak first. Topic Radical Islam- Why? Confronting Jihad at home and abroad. Speakers are expensive and we thank Tiger Bay for allowing us to have him to speak to the community at large. This event is free and open to the public.
