Liturgy At Holy Trinity Lutheran Church June 26, 2016 + 9:30 a.m. Lectionary 13

Prelude From Water Music + Allegro vivace + Air + Hornpipe George Frideric Händel (1685-1759) Gathering Hymn Greeting Prayer of the Day First Reading 1 Kings 19:15-16, 19-21 Psalm 16 Setting: Walter L. Pelz GATHERING The ringing of the meditation bowl calls us to silence, centering and reflection as we prepare for worship. Following the introduction to the hymn, please stand and face the rear of the nave. Turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. #833 Oh, That I Had a Thousand Voices Stanza 3 cantors The presiding minister bows toward the assembly which is the body of Christ and the primary symbol of God s presence in the liturgy. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Let us pray Amen ~ be seated ~ Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Refrain: Help Us Create SACRED SPACE by powering down Please do not use cell phones and other electronic devices. WORD This passage is set parallel to Luke 9 since also Elijah demands of Elisha a total rejection of his previous life as he dons the mantle of the prophet to proclaim the word of God. The parallel makes clear that the evangelists understood Jesus ministry in light of Israel s prophetic tradition. The cantors first sing the refrain and the assembly repeats. The cantors and assembly sing alternate verses. [2]

Tone: Protect me, O God, for I take ref- uge in you; I have said to the LORD, "You are my LORD, my good a- bove all other." All my delight is in the godly that are in the land, upon those who are noble a- mong the people. But those who run after other gods shall have their troubles multiplied. I will not pour out drink offerings to such gods, never take their names up- on my lips. Refrain O LORD, you are my portion and my cup; it is you who up- hold my lot. My boundaries enclose a pleasant land; indeed, I have a rich inheritance. I will bless the LORD who gives me counsel; my heart teaches me night after night. I have set the LORD al- ways before me; because God is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. Refrain My heart, therefore, is glad, and my spir- it rejoices; my body also shall rest in hope. For you will not abandon me to the grave, nor let your holy one see the pit. You will show me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy, and in your right hand are pleasures for- evermore. Refrain When we don the mantle of our baptism and follow Jesus, our lives are radically changed, from actions that protect and aggrandize the self to attitudes that value and nurture the community. For such a life we are empowered, not by any inherent human inclinations, but rather by the Spirit of the risen Christ. Would that the works of the flesh are as obvious as Paul suggests. Second Reading Galatians 5:1, 13-25 Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. [3]

Gospel Acclamation The cantors sing first and the assembly repeats. Stand to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. Gospel Luke 9:51-62 As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. Sermon Silence Hymn of the Day Prayers of Intercession Peace The assembly is invited to share God s peace with one another saying, Peace be with you, or similar words. Now it is we who are called both to tolerate nonbelievers and to leave all to follow Christ as we proclaim the kingdom. The challenge is to apply the radicalness of Jesus words to our lives in the world. The holy gospel according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Hallelujah (sung as above) ~ be seated ~ Following the sermon there is a time of silence for reflection and quiet meditation. Our liturgy is not only made up of words, gestures and music, but also moments of silence. ~ please stand ~ #804 Come Down, O Love Divine After each petition: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. ~ be seated ~ [4]

MEAL If this is your first time, or if you have been attending awhile and would like to get to know us better, please fill out the welcome slip in the pew and place it in the offering plate. Today s loose offering is designated for Extraordinary Lutheran Ministries (more info on page 8). Checks and envelope offerings support Holy Trinity s overall ministry unless designated otherwise. #648 Beloved, God s Chosen ~ please stand ~ Offering Offertory Hymn Great Thanksgiving Dialogue and preface The thanksgiving includes the following: Holy, Holy Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. [5] Eucharistic Prayer Memorial Acclamation

The Lord s Prayer As a sign of openness to the divine presence, you may join the presider in praying the Our Father with the ancient gesture of extended hands. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. Lamb of God Please remain standing. Communion Communion Anthem Now sing we joyfully unto God Gordon Young (1919-1998) Silence ~ be seated ~ All are welcome at Christ's table, including children. Bread is received in the hands. Wine is received either by drinking from the (silver) common cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the second (glass) cup. Gluten-free wafers are available from the presiding minister. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing, keeping your hands folded over your chest. For those unable to consume either wine or bread, communion is received fully in either element alone. Now sing we joyfully unto God! Alleluia! Now sing we happily unto God! Alleluia! ~ please stand ~ [6]

SENDING Having heard the word and shared the eucharist, we are sent to live our baptism through words and deeds, making known the love of Christ, and working for justice and peace in our families, communities, and world. Turn to face the cross as it recesses, you may bow as it passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. Prayer Blessing Sending Hymn Thankful hearts and voices raise Text: John W. Arthur (1922-1980). Sending Postlude Prelude in Classic Style Gordon Young (1919-1998) Following the liturgy, several things happen simultaneously: some folks greet one another and converse; others listen to the organ postlude; and others move to the front of the church for a time of refreshments and social time. This seminar is offered several times a year for expectant parents, parents with newborns, those planning a baptism in the coming months, and parents or others who would like a refresher on the meaning and theology of baptism. All parents planning to have a newborn baptized are asked to attend this seminar at some point before the baptism of their firstborn child. Nursery Assistant Position Open Please help us find a new nursery attendant for Sunday mornings. The ideal candidate will have previous experience with infants and toddlers and be available Sunday mornings beginning September 4, 2016. Email Pastor Sevig (msevig@htchicago.org) if you have questions or if you know someone who may be interested in this position. + Job Description: docs.htchicago.org/docs/nurseryattendantjobdescription.pdf + Application: docs.htchicago.org/docs/nurseryattendantapplication.docx Commemorations for the Week June 27 Cyril, Bishop of Alexandria, died 444 Cyril defended the orthodox teachings about the person of Christ. After a conflict involving all of the major Christian leaders of the time, it was decided that Cyril's interpretation, that Christ's person included both divine and human natures, was correct. June 28 Irenaeus, Bishop of Lyons, died around 202 This important early church leader tried very hard to hold to the faith handed down by the apostles. An opponent of the movement known as gnosticism, Irenaeus was one of the first to speak of the church as catholic, or linked together. June 29 Peter and Paul, Apostles These two strong-willed apostles are the pillars of the church in the first generation after Christ. Peter was one of the Twelve, one who both offered a glorious confession of faith and later denied knowing Jesus. Paul once led the persecution of Christians, then was converted and helped bring the faith to non-jewish people. July 1 Catherine Winkworth, died 1878; John Mason Neale, died 1866; hymn translators Neale was an English priest who specialized in the translation of Latin and Greek hymns into English. Winkworth lived in Manchester, England, and devoted herself to translating German hymns. Almost all English-speaking hymnals include many of their translations. [10]
