Transcription:

Liturgy at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church February 19, 2017 + 8:30 & 10:30 a.m. Seventh Sunday after Epiphany In today s first reading we hear, You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy. Yet we know we cannot achieve perfection. Our attempts to love neighbors and even our enemies fall short of what God desires for us. Yet in Jesus we see one who loved even those who persecuted and killed him. We are made holy in baptism, and forgiven at the table of God s mercy. As a people made holy by God, we go in peace to love as we have been loved.

10:30 A.M. LITURGY Help Us Create SACRED SPACE by powering down Please do not use cell phones and other electronic devices. GATHERING The ringing of the meditation bowl calls us to silence, centering and reflection as we prepare for worshi Prelude Largo Jean-Baptiste Loeillet (1680-1730) Prelude in C Major Louis Vierne (1870-1937) Confession & Forgiveness All may make the sign of the cross, the sign that is marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. Following an invitation please kneel (if you are able). Silence is kept for reflection. God of all mercy, we confess that we have sinned against you, opposing your will in our lives. We have denied your goodness in each other, in ourselves, and in the world you have created. We repent of the evil that enslaves us, the evil we have done, and the evil done on our behalf. Forgive, restore, and strengthen us through our Savior Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your love and serve only your will. Amen / 3 /

Stand and face the baptismal font. The presiding minister announces God s forgiveness. Turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. Incense, used in Christian and Jewish worship since ancient times, is part of our multi-sensory liturgy. The assembly, gospel book, and table all signs of Christ's presence among us are honored with incense, representing the rising of our prayers and praise. Gathering Hymn All Glory Be to God on High / 4 /

Greeting The presiding minister bows toward the assembly which is the body of Christ and the primary symbol of God s presence in the liturgy. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Kyrie / 5 /

Prayer of the Day Let us pray Amen Be seated / 6 /

WORD First Reading Leviticus 19:1-2, 9-18 Most scholars consider the Holiness Code in Leviticus 17 26 as originating during Israel s monarchy but compiled into its present form after the exile. Leviticus 19 describes the way of life required of those who have now returned to the land and are called to live a holy life before God. It interprets the law as care for the poor. This passage includes the radical call to love the neighbor as oneself. Word of God, word of Life Thanks be to God. Psalm 119:33-40 Refrain: Tone: Teach me, O LORD, the way of your statutes, and I shall keep it to the end. Give me understanding, and I shall keep your teaching; I shall keep it with all my heart. Lead me in the path of your commandments, for that is my desire. Incline my heart to your decrees and not to unjust gain. Refrain Turn my eyes from be- holding falsehood; give me life in your way. Fulfill your promise to your servant, which is for those who fear you. / 7 /

Turn away the reproach that I dread, because your judg- ments are good. Behold, I long for your commandments; by your righteousness en- liven me. Refrain Second Reading 1 Corinthians 3:10-11, 16-23 In continuing his letter to the Corinthian church, Paul used the metaphors of a building s foundations and of a temple to summarize his criticism of factions and worldly wisdom. Corinthians were surrounded by temples dedicated to the Greco-Roman deities, and the Jewish participants would have revered the Jerusalem temple. Paul replaced these temples with the Christian community: the you is plural. The passage spoke of the indwelling Spirit, the foolishness of Christ, and the grace of God. Word of God, word of Life Thanks be to God. Stand to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. Gospel Acclamation The cantor sings first and the assembly repeats. Alleluia. In those who obey the word of Christ, the love of God has reached perfection. Alleluia.(1 John 2:5) Alleluia. / 8 /

Gospel Matthew 5:38-48 As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. The first chapter of the Sermon on the Mount concludes with Jesus replacing several traditional Jewish teachings about communal morality with a radical call to Christian love. Christians are to live better than Jews or Gentiles by replacing fairness with forgiveness and ethnic preference with universal love. Verse 48 offers a two-word summary of morality described in the Sermon on the Mount: Be perfect. Matthew is insistent that the early Christian church place the highest value on the ethical life. The holy gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Alleluia (above) Sermon Following the sermon there is a time of silence for reflection and quiet meditation. Our liturgy is not only made up of words, gestures and music, but also moments of silence. Silence Please stand. / 9 /

Hymn of the Day Your Ways Are Not Our Own Prayers of Intercession Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Peace The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. The assembly is invited to share God s peace with one another saying, Peace be with you, or similar words. Be seated. / 10 /

MEAL Gathering of Gifts and Setting of Table If this is your first time, or if you have been attending awhile and would like to get to know us better, please fill out the welcome slip in the pew and place it in the offering plate. Today s loose offering is designated for ONE Northside. Checks and envelope offerings support Holy Trinity s overall ministry unless designated otherwise. Offertory Look Who Gathers at Christ s Table / 11 /

Please Stand Great Thanksgiving It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: / 12 /

Please repeat responses after the presiding minister. The following are sung during the thanksgiving: The Lord s Prayer As a sign of openness to the divine presence, you may join the presider in praying the Our Father with the ancient gesture of extended hands. / 13 /

Lamb of God Be seated. Communion All are welcome at Christ's table, including children. Bread is received in the hands. Wine is received either by drinking from the (silver) common cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the second (glass) cup. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing, keeping your hands folded or extended over your chest. For those unable to consume either wine or bread, communion is received fully in either element alone. / 14 /

Anthem Teach Me Thy Way, O Lord Benjamin M. Ramsey (b. 1919) Teach me thy way, O Lord, teach me thy way. Thy guiding grace afford, teach me thy way. Help me to walk aright, more by faith, less by sight; Lead me with heav nly light, teach me thy way. When doubts and fears arise, teach me thy way. When storms o'er spread the skies, teach me thy way. Shine through the cloud and rain, through sorrow, toil and pain; Make thou my pathway plain, teach me thy way. Long as my life shall last, teach me thy way. Where er my lot be cast, teach me thy way. Until the race is run, until the journey s done, Until the crown is won, teach me thy way. Hymn #721 Goodness Is Stronger Than Evil Silence Please stand. Prayer SENDING Having heard the word and shared the eucharist, we are sent to live our baptism through words and deeds, making known the love of Christ, and working for justice and peace in our families, communities, and world. Turn to face the cross as it recesses, you may bow as it passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. Blessing Sending Hymn #878 Soli Deo Gloria / 15 /

Dismissal Sending Go in peace. Be the light of Christ. Thanks be to God. Postlude Fughetta on Allein Gott in der Höh sei Ehr Andreas Nikolaus Vetter (1666-173) Following the liturgy, several things happen simultaneously: some folks greet one another and converse; others listen to the organ postlude; and others move to the front of the church for a time of refreshments and social time. Today s Altar Flowers are sponsored by Ken Duckmann In honor of our anniversary and for God s blessings BAPTISM SEMINAR: On Thursday, February 23, Pastor Sevig will lead a baptismal seminar for those who are planning a baptism in the coming months or anyone who would like a refresher on the meaning and theology of baptism.
