The Ascension of the Lord Page 2 COMMISSIONED TO LIVE IN THE WORLD Seventh Sunday of Easter May 13, 2018 If God so loved us, we also must love one another. 1 John 4:11 In today s scriptures we hear two different stories about commissioning. In the Acts of the Apostles Peter leads the assembly in prayer that the Lord will choose and commission the person to replace Judas among the Twelve. In the Gospel Jesus prays that his chosen disciples might be consecrated, or made holy. Jesus does not ask his Father to keep the disciples separate from the world, but instead sends them out into the world. While we might think that holy people are set apart from the world, we cannot hear today s scriptures without realizing that God s holy, chosen people are commissioned to live in the midst of the world, where they can reveal the love of God that makes the entire world holy. The Ascension of the Lord Page 4 THE ASENSION OF THE LORD INTO HEAVEN On this Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord into Heaven, we need to remind ourselves that even though the Risen Lord physically left us on that first Ascension, He remains still with us. That is why the angels ask the Disciples why they are wasting time looking up, trying to catch a last glimpse of Jesus. They are told to look around, to see, to speak and to bring His living presence to the world. And so, evangelization is born. And now it is up to us to do the same. So, today`s feast is not so much an ending as it is a beginning. The Ascension was the close of Jesus` physical ministry on Earth, but it was not the end of His ministry. That is where His followers and Apostles continued, and where we need to continue today. In his exhortation "Evangelii Gaudium", Pope Francis reminds us of this call to evangelization: "Anyone who has experienced God`s saving love does not need much time or lengthy training to go out and proclaim that love." Discipleship-evangelization are calls to action, to continue Christ`s presence on Earth. Today, May 13th, we celebrate Mother`s Day throughout the United States. It is a time to thank or remember our own mothers. We celebrate Mother`s Day not only because of the things our mothers have done for us, but their loving care that is the most basic image of God`s grace. For many people, our mothers or the women who mothered us, are the most important persons in our lives and remain important even as we have our own children. We should also remember all the women religious who may have served us and our Church around the world. Peace!! Fr.
