Psalm 27:1 STAND FIRM IN THE LORD It is not hard to imagine, in this age of wars, evil groups bent on the destruction of humanity, and political follies, that the words of Saint Paul were so accurate, even for his time. It seems that the world never changes. Paul says, Many... conduct themselves as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is their destruction... Their minds are occupied with earthly things (Philippians 3:18, 19). The result is the destruction of innocent people and of the Earth itself. But Paul says to the Philippians, our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we also await a savior, the Lord Jesus Christ (3:20). He will change our lowly body to conform with his glorified body (3:21). Note that he says body rather than bodies. He is talking about the whole community of believers, who, following the example of Jesus and of Paul, will come into the glory of God. So stand firm in the Lord (4:1). Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. If you d like more information or have any questions, please contact Jazz Cunningham at (530) or stayauburn@gmail.com AUBURN INTERFAITH FOOD CLOSET Following the Lenten plan for prayer, sacrifice and generous giving please consider making nonperishable food donations at the church for the Auburn Food Closet. Hunger knows no season and all donations are welcome. The Food Closet provided groceries for about 8000 families last year. 46% are children; 10% seniors; and 7% are homeless. Please leave donations in the wooden bins inside the doors of the church. This year the cost of providing grocery bags for people has caused us an extra expense to provide food for our community. There is a special need for canned meat and fish, along with peanut butter, pasta sauce, canned soup, fruit and vegetables. In addition to any canned foods you can give, please consider including plastic, paper and cloth grocery bags with your donations. The Inter-Faith Food Closet is having a Stuff-a- Bus food drive all day at Safeway on Saturday, March 23 rd. St. Teresa s Catholic Church will be helping with the food drive this day. 4 Second Sunday of Lent Page 4 SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT Each liturgical year on the second Sunday of Lent, our Gospel reading recounts what we call the Transfiguration of Christ. In the gospel of transfiguration, Jesus was praying when He was transfigured. The disciples who were with Him are given a glimpse of His future glory. The transfiguration was to reveal Jesus Christ as God and as the promised Messiah. The description of the transfiguration occurs in all three synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke). This is a proclamation of the Lord s divinity. It is intended for all of us. In fact, each of us is invited, just as Peter, James and John are, to become part of this experience. We are called to conversion and witness of the truth. That is what Lent should be all about for us. We need to strive for conversion, for grasping the hope offered by Jesus Christ. St. Thomas Aquinas wrote: At His transfiguration, Jesus Christ showed His disciples the splendor of His beauty, to which He will shape and color those who are His. Let us offer our Lenten practices to our Lord, that through these practices and through the acceptance of our daily crosses we may become closer to our Lord in His suffering so that we ma finally share the glory of transfiguration and resurrection. It s the ice. The other one asked: Why do you say that? The first man said in reply: Vodka and ice will ruin your kidneys. Rum and ice will ruin your liver. Whiskey and ice will ruin your heart. Gin and ice will ruin your brain. Apparently, ice is the common denominator. So, ice is the enemy. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A priest was ministering to a man on his deathbed. Renounce Satan! said the priest. No, said the dying man. I say, renounce the devil and his works! No, the man repeats. And why not, I ask you in the name of all that is holy? Because, said the dying man. I want to wait until I see where I am heading, before I start annoying anybody. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ At the conclusion of the Church service, the worshippers filed out of the sanctuary to greet the minister. As one of them left, he shook the minister s hand, thanked him for the sermon and said, Thanks for the message, Reverend. You know, you must be smarter than Einstein. Beaming with pride, the minister said, Thank you, brother, but why do you think so? The man replied, Well Reverend, they say that Einstein was so smart that only ten people in the entire world could understand him. But Reverend, no one can understand you! Salmo 27 (26):1 MANTENTE FIRME EN EL SEÑOR No es difícil imaginar, en esta época de guerras, que grupos malvados tiendan a la destrucción de la humanidad y locuras políticas, que las palabras de san Pablo fueron tan precisas, aún para el tiempo en que vivió. Pareciera que el mundo nunca cambia. Pablo dice muchos se comportan como enemigos de la cruz de Cristo. Para los que piensan en cosas terrenas, su destino es la perdición... (Filipenses 3: 18, 19). El resultado es la destrucción de personas inocentes y del planeta mismo. Pero Pablo dice a los filipenses: somos ciudadanos del cielo, de donde esperamos como salvador a Jesucristo el Señor (3:20). Él transformará nuestro cuerpo frágil en un cuerpo glorioso semejante al suyo (3:21). Nota que él dice cuerpo en lugar de cuerpos. Él habla acerca de la completa comunidad de creyentes, quienes, siguiendo el ejemplo de Jesús y Pablo, vendrán a la gloria de Dios. Así que manténganse firmes en el Señor! (4:1). Copyright J. S. En muchas parroquias latinas la Cuaresma también es tiempo de misiones. De niño recuerdo haber participado cada año en las misiones de mi parroquia. Escuchábamos a los predicadores con curiosidad, ya que aparecían solo una vez al año y luego se regresaban a lugares lejanos y desconocidos. Nunca imagine que algún día yo también estuviera como predicador de misiones. Me gustaría darles un resumen del mensaje que he sembrado en varias parroquias. Con cinco temas se puede evangelizar a los bautizados recordándoles los cinco puntos claves del Evangelio cristiano: 1) Dios nos ama y nos hizo para él; 2) Nosotros hemos pecado y sufrimos las consecuencias; 3) Dios nos manda a su Hijo para librarnos del mal; 4) Jesús desea formar parte de nuestras vidas personales, invitémoslo! y 5) Jesús llena nuestro corazón con el poder y la presencia de su Espíritu.
