James 1:21b TRADITION Tradition is long human memory set, not in stone, but in human interaction. Without this active memory, the bonds of relationship and affection fray and fall apart. Communities dissolve as surely as neglected buildings do. After participating in events, celebrations, and even small rituals, we remark about how good it is to gather and remember. Today s readings remind us of foundations laid deeper than the human will to relate. Today we hear about God s will to relate to us to be our God as we are called to be God s own beloved people. Today in three readings and three ways we remember the covenant bonds that create us as a people and the obligation and responsibility that express the innermost attitude of soul. You are mine. 4 Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 4 PARISH PICNIC AND MINISTRY DAY September 20, 2015 A few months back the parish council put forward the idea of a parish picnic so that we could celebrate the Blessings that each parishioner brings to our parish. Yes, we know those who sit next to us in church or those who go to the same Mass as we do. Each family s presence and presents have made us a caring community. We are Blessed by our fellow parishioners and on Sunday, September 20th, we will take time to play as well as pray with each other. Our parish council asked Dr. Michael Durant to help organize the picnic day. The picnic will begin at Noon and will end at 3pm. The 10:30am Mass and the 3:30pm Mass are the bookends for our celebration. The generosity of those who gave to the Bishops ONE Campaign will pay for the celebration. Sierra Grill, Strings, Maria s Tacos and the Knights of Columbus will provide the food. Three local bands will make enthusiastic music, and sports and games will keep our children entertained. As a young priest I was part of many parish festivals. I often saw the disappointed faces of young children whose parents didn t have any more money to buy tickets. Likewise, parents were hurt when money was short. At our parish picnic everyone is welcome and no money is needed. Every two or three years we have Ministry Days when we volunteer to play our part in liturgy, teaching and leadership for the good of our community. There will be ministry tables all around our soccer and baseball fields at the picnic. God Bless, Fr. 6 August 30, 2015 Page 6 SCRIP is Fundraising While You Shop! Scrip is simply a term that means substitute money. Scrip fundraising allows our parish family to raise money for our Catholic school by using gift cards, or scrip to pay for everyday purchases. Families can buy gift cards using cash or checks after weekend Masses, at the School Office, or order online at and pay face value. The school orders the gift cards from Great Lakes Scrip Center for less than face value, and the school gets to keep the difference, or rebate; that s where the fundraising comes from. It s really that simple! When families use scrip gift cards instead of cash, checks or credit cards at their favorite retailers, they are fundraising while they shop. Our Scrip program offers a huge variety of retailers, including grocery stores, restaurants, gas stations and so much more, so it s easy to make scrip a part of any shopping routine. Just by regularly using scrip for weekly purchases, a single family can easily generate $500 or more annually for the school. Thank you for your support through SCRIP!! 10th ANNUAL RUMMAGE SALE ST. TERESA OF AVILA PARISH September 11th & 12th 8:00am to 4:00pm Can you believe it? It's that time of year when we ask that you start cleaning and thinning out closets, garages and storage units of all the "stuff" you don't even remember saving! That's right--we all do it and then we are challenged to sort through and donate. We will be open for drop off donations on Monday, Sept. 7th through Wednesday, Sept. 9th from 8:00am to 3:00pm in the parish hall. We are accepting items such as household items, clothing, toys, jewelry, kitchen items, sport, etc.--- We can't accept large appliances, encyclopedias, exercise equipment, computers or mattresses. Also, we could use newspaper & brown grocery bags. Any questions call ext. 10 or Religious Education (RE) has something for everyone in 2015/16. We are offering the standard RE studies grades K-8 including the Sacrament s (1 st Communion & Confirmation), as well as, two new formats. Traditional RE will be held as always on Sunday mornings from 9:15 10:15. In addition, we are offering Whole Group RE Learning on Thursday evenings from 4:30 5:30. This program, which is similar to learning in a one-room school house, has all of the student s learning together in a controlled environment. It is a different model of learning but the content of the study follows the traditional program. Lastly, we offer a new opportunity for Family Faith Formation. Parents and children primarily complete their formation at home. Support is provided through monthly gatherings from September through April on the second or third Sunday from 11:45 2:45. This is where the entire family comes together to share a meal, discuss what they have learned and to participate in an engaging lesson. These are great opportunities to interact with each other in a variety of ways and to enhance the learning experience for everyone. For more information or to volunteer please call
