Dear Parishioners of St. Bernard and Ascension, As parochial administrator of your parishes, I will be writing a monthly article for your bulletin. Just as a reminder, a parochial administrator is someone who fulfills some roles that a pastor would normally do, such as signing checks, working with personnel, and making sure that the sacramental needs of the parishioners are met. For the most part, that Sacramental portion will be done by Fr. Joseph Fink, but I will be there some weekends and be on call for emergencies those days Fr. Fink is not on site. I will be meeting with staff and the Joint Mission Team on a regular basis and try to move forward toward some goals they determine. This past Sunday was the end of the Christmas Season, the Baptism of the Lord. It is a good time to consider our own baptism and how we are to respond to that. When I was a seminarian I studied in Jerusalem and was able to visit the Jordan River. I brought home a bottle of water from there and put it in a screw-top jar and eventually forgot about it. Three years later I opened that box and found the jar empty except for a small amount of sediment. The baptismal waters had dried up. When we don t do anything with our baptism, the force of it dries up. In baptism we become beloved children of God. It is a gift that also carries great responsibility. This point in your parishes history is a time to eagerly act on this responsibility. More will depend on you and your leadership now than almost any time in your history. Now we begin Ordinary Time which is not just the absence of some special season. It gets its name from ordinal numbers, which are first, second, third, etc. In Ordinary Time we hear about Jesus ministry and his proclamation of the kingdom. Usually we will read from the Gospel according to Luke, but this weekend it is a final Epiphany story from John, the Miracle at Cana. Jesus is manifested to his disciples as a miracle worker, and his disciples began to believe in him. You may have seen pictures of the miracle at Cana. Almost always they show pottery ewers that would hold two or three gallons at most. This is a fallacy. The stone jars mentioned in the gospel are thickwalled, heavy, and about the size of a trash can. They were, upon Jesus command, filled to the brim. Jesus fills us like that as well. Don t buy the lie that minimizes what Jesus does for us. Fr. Stan Mader CALENDAR FOR ASCENSION AND ST. BERNARDS PARISHES Sun. Jan. 20th 9am: Fulfilled Bible Study at Ascension Mon. Church of the Ascension Norwood Young America, MN Adult Bible Study: Fulfilled Have you ever been unable to explain the why of Catholic beliefs? Have you ever wondered why the Old Testament sounds so different from the New Testament? In the Old Testament, God began building a plan and laying a foundation for the beautiful traditions of the Catholic Faith. That plan was fulfilled by Jesus in the New Testament. Fulfilled: Uncovering the Biblical Foundations of Catholicism is an apologetic approach to sharing the Catholic Faith using the Old Testament Tabernacle as a blueprint for God s plan. While it is designed as a faith-sharing Scripture study, you will also gain an understanding of some of the most questioned Catholic teachings. Fulfilled will reignite your love of Scripture and help you share and defend the Catholic Faith with the Word of God. Fulfilled will help you a) Explain how Jesus fulfills the Old Testament Share the Catholic Faith concisely b) Acquire a thorough knowledge of the Tabernacle s design and its function as blueprint for the Faith c) Learn how to answer incomplete and non- Catholic interpretations of the Bible 4) Examine your own faith and grow deeper in your relationship with Christ. Fulfilled study will begin Sunday, January, 20,2019 at 9:00am after the 8:00am Mass and Monday, January 21, 2019, at 8:30am For more information, contact: Frances Kramer, kramerdale@aol.com 952-467-2275 or Chris George, timchrist102575@yahoo.com-952-467-3138 Thank You to Ascension Catholic United Financial for providing the catered meal from Hillcrest on the first evening of classes for the second half of the Faith Formation year. Tuesday, January 22 nd - Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children The over 56 million abortions since the 1973 decisions of Roe v. Wade reflect with heartbreaking magnitude what Pope Francis means by a throwaway culture. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal designates January 22 as a day of prayer and penance: In all the Dioceses of the United States of America, January 22 shall be observed as a particular day of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life and of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion. As individuals, we are called to observe this day through the penitential practices of prayer, fasting and/or giving alms. Another way to take part is through participating in special events to observe the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Fifty Years on the Family: A Look Back to the Present Presenter: Kari-Shane Davis Zimmerman, Ph.D. A Saint John's School of Theology and Seminary Theology Day - Over the past fifty years, familial life has evolved in response to the signs of the time. Changes within marriage and gender roles, as well as expectations regarding men and women s relationship to work have moved the family unit into unchartered territory. This session aims to explore some of those changes by looking back on key statements made by the Church regarding family life (e.g., Gaudium et Spes, Familiaris Consortio by Pope John Paul II, and most recently Pope Francis Amoris Laetitia) in hopes of celebrating progress made and identifying areas in which certain challenges still remain. Jan. 31, check-in from 6:00 pm to 6:30 pm, and presentation from 6:30 pm to 9 pm, Saint Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, Maple Grove MN 55369. Free event. Registration is required: www.collegevillemn.com/theologyday, 320-363-3560 ortheologyday@csbsju.edu.
