2 FAITH FORMATION SNAPSHOTS This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 1 John 5:14 The STBAFF program is well under way with three weeks of classes behind us. We are grateful for all the wonderful volunteers who have stepped forward this year to serve as catechists, classroom assistants, kitchen help, parking attendants, greeters, office support and adorers. Every year I am in awe of the willingness for people to serve! For several years we have been blessed with parishioners and parents praying in church during class, this year is no exception. We can never discount the power of prayer and the fruit it bears. We are entering our third year as a combined faith formation program.god IS GOOD! In our CGS atriums, scripture and prayer are the central foundation of guiding the children to the Good Shepherd. Children are encouraged to seek the Good Shepherd in reading the Bible and prayer. Reading scripture and praying allows us to know His heart and gain wisdom and spiritual insight that brings us closer to Him. Please see the communication that was shared with parents last week. Kara Wickenhauser Faith Formation Director Preschool Gr. 5 We do not know how to pray Last night in the Atrium, the children were introduced to the Prayer Table. We gathered as a group, taking some time to sit quietly, absorbing the peace filled aura and taking in the beauty of the Prayer Table, lovingly bedecked by Tamara with a colored Prayer Cloth, and preciously displaying the Bible, a candle, a Good Shepherd statue and a striking picture of Jesus in a dazzling flower garden, tenderly holding a child on His lap. The children were encouraged to come to the table on their own anytime they were in the Atrium, to sit quietly, to listen, to look at a book about Jesus or have one of us read to them. Throughout the evening, two of the children did go to the Prayer Table by themselves. As I was lighting the candle for one of the little ones, tears welled up in her eyes and she choked out~ I don t know how to pray. My heart broke for her; holding back tears of my own, I assured her that Jesus was so happy she had come to the Prayer Table on her own, just to be close to Him; that was her prayer. All boys and girls grades 3-12 th who would like to be and who are currently serving are asked to come. October Family Rosary - All families, couples and individuals are invited to pray the family rosary 25 minutes before Sunday (Saturday) Mass in October. Indeed, we as parishes are family. Prayer bonds a family together. The Mass is the most profound family prayer. The rosary prepares us to enter more fully into the Mass as we insert ourselves into the maternal heart of Mary and she introduces us to a deeper relationship with her Son. This October our family rosary is for the healing of our family and all who have been wounded by the clergy sexual abuse scandal. << < < < <(Continued from the column on the left) I was humbled by her innocence and her longing to know how to pray; ahhh, the tender heart of a child. It is no small wonder Jesus says, Let the Children come to me. Feeling a bit ashamed of myself, I realized I too, oftentimes, do not know how to pray. I wondered if that ever happens to anyone else??? Then, these comforting words of St Paul to the Romans in Chapter 8: 26, came to me: we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with sighs and groaning's too deep for words. 3 Church of the Ascension Norwood Young America, MN Sun. Oct. 7th there will be a Thank You and Farewell to Marlene Robinson after the 8:00 a.m. Mass at Donut Sunday. Come and wish her well. She will be returning to her hometown, Traverse City, in Michigan. Ascension's Catholic United Financial is sponsoring a "Mystery Bingo" on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 1:00. Join us for a fun afternoon games of bingo will be played. Each "mystery" gift is valued at approx. $20. There will be a grand prize drawing for adults and two special drawings for children. Concessions will be available. Proceeds benefit Ascension's Faith Formation program. Appalachia Christmas Project 2018 Ascension will be participating in the Appalachia Christmas Project, sponsored by the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women. We will collect new items now through Oct 28. A box will be placed in the church entry for donations. This may be the last year of participating in this project. This is an opportunity to consider other mission outreach projects. For any further information phone Sue at Father on retreat: Fr. Rosary at The Harbor: The Respect Life group will pray the Rosary with the residents at The Harbor each of the Mondays in October, They will meet at 10:15 am in the 3rd floor media room. World Mission Sunday October 20/21, 2018 Celebrating our Missionary Spirit On World Mission Sunday, Catholics around the world unite to recommit to their missionary identity. This celebration and appeal of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith supports our brothers and sisters in over 1,100 mission dioceses worldwide. This year s theme, Witnessing Faith through the Hearts of Youth, echoes the energy and joy of youth serving the poor and elderly in mission dioceses as witnesses of the Gospel message. This year, as an example, the activities of St. Vincent de Paul Society youth at the mission parish of Jesucristo Resucitado in Venezuela are highlighted. Please offer prayers and gifts of support on World Mission Sunday to aid those witnessing the faith in mission dioceses like the St. Vincent de Paul Society. This collection will be taken up at Ascension and St. Bernard. Church of St. Bernard Cologne, MN Beautification project starts Monday October 8: Help needed to move altar furniture and tabernacle to storage. The Minnesota Viking game starts after 3 pm on Sun. Oct. 7. We will start after the 10 am mass to move furniture. We also need to set up for weekly mass in the Narthex, Depending on how many people show up it should only take about an hour. Your help would be appreciated. We are looking for volunteers to assist with usher duties and using the elevator at Ascension Church during the renovation at St Bernard. Men Altar Servers: Beginning in November adult (18 and up) male altar servers will be serving Sunday (Sat. evening) Masses on the 1 st Sun. of each month. We are grateful that we are blessed with women who serve as EMHCs and Readers and other liturgical roles--they do so in numbers greater than men. It is healthy for a parish to also witness laymen leading prayer. Since the men will be wearing server albs and carrying items up and down the sanctuary steps they must have good balance/stability. The training session for both Ascension and St. Bernard men will be held on Sat., Oct. 27th at 6pm OR Sun., Oct. 28 th at 11am BOTH AT ASCENSION. St Joseph school students will be participating in the schools "Rake-a-thon" On Friday Nov 2nd. Our parishioner students: Ben Gallus (Ascension), Ally and Lily Kunkel, Jake Kooiman, and Brooks Lobitz (St Bernard) will be participating. The students and parents rake lawns for any of our local parishioners that are in need or interested, if you would like us to rake your lawn, or know of someone that would like us to rake their lawn, please contact Monica Kooiman at or Emily at the school office The family of Dale Arndt of Cologne wants to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who came to Dale Day on Sunday, September 19 at the Cologne Lion s Park in honor of Dale following his diagnosis of terminal cancer. The amount of family and friends that attended to celebrate his life, visit with him, and surround us with love, was unbelievably heart-warming and touched us all deeply.
