Notes from Rabbi S. David Kane What an extrarordinary time for Congregation Bnai Torah! Through much hard work and persistence, we find ourselves in the middle of a string of exciting and successful events, occasions and holidays. What a delicious and delightful Shabbat Across America dinner! Our Sisterhood Chefs outdid themselves, guaranteeing that a great and sumptuous time was had by all. Many thanks and accolades should be given to all those who designed, prepared and worked at our booth at the Jewish Heritage Festival. Not only were we well represented in our booth, but the Congregation Bnai Torah Family were everywhere inside and outside, assisting (or running) other booths, displays and educational activities. To continue on the same theme, it is not every congregation in a small town like Ormond Beach who reaches out to a World Class Jewish performer like Sam Glaser for a Workshop and Concert of the caliber one usually finds in huge Jewish communities. Many thanks to the Federation Endowment Committee and our own Sisterhood for making such an extraordinary event possible. Not only are we enjoying the fruits of our special events, but there are also two new monthly activities which keep adding great dimensions to our congregational experiences. Tot Shabbat(coming April 20, 6pm) is a success because of the Tot Families' participation and some combination of Helen Farb and Rosalie Morrissey. And, of course, Dr Steven Katz has kept the Jewish yearning for learning rewarded with our monthly Nosh and Drosh (coming April 21, 8:45am). He even brings the orange juice! Our Sisterhood is not even pausing to catch its breath, finishing their active season with our Seder, their customary closing dinner and a very special Sisterhood Shabbat Service ( Friday, April 27) the time you read this, the PAGE 2 Education team will have pulled off another model Seder and will be preparing for Religious School Shabbat (May4-5) I don't really have enough space here to express all my admiration and appreciation to all those who prepare and participate in so many aspects of synagogue life. There once was a story about a man who thought his only happiness was in obtaining more gold, so he travelled for many months, returning home rich, but oddly unhappy. Ultimately, he discovered that the true treasure was the blessing of family, friends and higher purpose to be found in his very own community. As your Rabbi, I must admit, that this congregation is a treasure enough for a lifetime. Val and I wish you all a very Happy Passover(Please join us for sevices April 7-8, 13-14) and we will see everyone at the Annual meeting April 29th. Message from the Co-President: Norman Feldman April is here, Passover is fast approaching, and I realize that my three years as co-president of the Congregation is almost finished. A new slate of officers will be elected on April 29 th. It has been a very rewarding time overall and I am proud that the Board and I will be leaving the Congregation in a better position than we were a few years ago. We have had many successes in fund raising, membership and education. We also have had more than a few fun and social events which have allowed the members to get to know each other better. This past Sunday, we found the five steps to our souls at the Sam Glaser concert and workshop. It was a wonderful experience and I believe everyone left with a lightness in their steps. Thank you to the Jewish Federation Endowment Fund, Rabbi Kane, the Sisterhood, and everyone who contributed to a rocking, Yiddish afternoon. Shabbat across America was well attended and as usual, the Sisterhood provided us with a wonderful meal. Our Nosh and Drosh continues to be well attended. Thank you to Steven Katz, the Rabbi and all the participants for interesting discussions and insights. Although we were out of town, I heard that the Jewish Heritage Festival went well and the Sisterhood did well with the baked goods and gift shop items. Thank you to all who volunteered to help the overall festival, set up, work at our booth or contribute to the day. We may have obtained some new members too. Our next event will be our Passover Seder on Friday, April 6 th. It promises to be a special evening and will be facilitated once again by our Sisterhood. Finally, let s not forget the Annual Meeting on Sunday, April 29 th at 10:00 A.M. We will have the election of the new officers and board, the Rabbi s contract to approve and other items of importance to all to discuss. You must be present to vote. Please plan on attending. Once again, thank you to the Board, the Rabbi, the Sisterhood, and all those who helped me during my term as President. I sincerely appreciate all that you did and continue to do. Norm Feldman

PAGE 3 SISTERHOOD NEWS: Co- President Barbara Ringle It is hard to believe that spring has sprung and it is almost time for Passover. The Sisterhood will again be providing food for the First Seder on Friday, April 6, 2012. Our Kitchen Angels will need some assistance setting up so please volunteer some time when you get the request for help. Speaking of the Kitchen Angels, they have again come through and did a fantastic job on Shabbat across America and our Brunch and Learn. The program committee has also been busy and we want to thank Melanie Dolan and Carin Rothberg for bringing Jake Dolan to speak on Preventing Identity Theft. We are sure that everyone in attendance came away with important information. The next Board Meeting of the Sisterhood is scheduled for April 1, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at the Synagogue on Sunday, April 1 st. If any Board members can stay after the meeting we need volunteers to help kosher the kitchen for Passover. If we can get enough volunteers, the task should be accomplished quickly and efficiently. On Tuesday, April 24 th at 6:00 p.m. the Sisterhood s closing dinner will be held at the Olive Garden on A1A. At this meeting, the slate of new officers will be presented and elections will be held. This meeting is open to all Sisterhood members along with spouses, guests or significant others. You must RSVP to the office by Wednesday, April 18, 2012 so we can give the restaurant a solid count for dinner. Thanks to Lynn Hartman for making the arrangements for the dinner. On Friday, April 27 th, the Sisterhood will be conducting the Shabbat Services and sponsoring the Oneg. At that service, we will also be presenting the Ada Siegel Woman of Valor Award. Judy Kane is chairperson of the program. Please volunteer if she calls you to participate in the Shabbat service. You no doubt have heard of Recipe for Success on the Food Network. Well, on Sunday, May 6th at 1:00 p.m. at Aberdeen Clubhouse the Sisterhood is pleased to present our own Patrizia Rubin. She will be sharing with us some of her very special recipes for success. We will not only learn the recipes, we will enjoy a magnificent Italian meal and the company of friends of the Sisterhood. The cost for the event is $36.00 and it promises to be both informative and delicious. Please RSVP to the Office by Friday, April 27 th so Patrizia has time to shop for us and can make the necessary preparations. We want to wish everyone a Happy Passover. Shalom, Barbara Ringle & Roberta Feldman Co-Presidents Cuisine for a Queen A special Fund Raising Project for Sisterhood: Patrizia Rubin will demonstrate and prepare a full course Italian lunch with wine. Date: Sunday, May 6, 2012 Location: Aberdeen Clubhouse. Time 1:00 PM. Cost: $36.00 per person. Gentlemen, friends and family members invited Please call your reservations to Sema Friedman 673-0613.

Shabbat Across America PAGE 6 On Friday evening, March 2 nd, we here at CBT participated in the Shabbat Across America program. Started by the National Jewish Outreach Program in 1997, approximately 700 synagogues across the continent open their doors in celebration of this event. Our neighbors to the North also participate in the evening offering their Shabbat Across Canada equivalent. Here at CBT approximately 70 members and guests shared a lovely evening full of song, worship and celebration capped by a wonderful meal of meatloaf, purple potatoes, a variety of desserts, salad and drink prepared by our extraordinary kitchen staff of ladies. Prior to enjoying this wonderful culinary delight, the evening was started with Services led by Rabbi Kane in his usual inimitable style. Carole Miller LAST CHANCE FOR COUPON BOOKS! Please contact Lea Moskowitz for a special price on the few remaining coupon books. Any extras will be returned to the vendor at the end of May. Thanks. Sisterhood Program On Tuesday, March 27, Sisterhood presented an Identity Theft program. Speakers for the evening were Jake Dolan and Michael Ferrari representing the Florida Community Bank. Their inimitable fashion was most enlightening. The audience learned how to protect themselves against common and uncommon ways thievery happens. We were also informed about various ways to protect your banking interests. Their motto Deter Detect Defend. After the question and answer period delicious desserts and drinks were served. And a good time was had by all. Carole Miller

PAGE 7 JEWISH FEDERATION OF VOLUSIA AND FLAGLER COUNTIES 470 Andalusia Avenue - Ormond Beach, Florida 32174-7502 (386) 672-0294 - FAX. # (386) 673-1316 Dear Congregants: On Sunday, April 22nd, at 7:00 p.m., columnist Greg Dawson will present his Holocaust documentary Sharing in the Spotlight at Temple Beth-El. You might know Greg from his consumer advocacy column in the Orlando Sentinel entitled The Last Resort, where he helped mediate between companies and dissatisfied consumers. Ironically, Greg's mother, Zhanna Arshanskaya Dawson, a Jewish girl from the Ukraine, was truly challenged from 1941-1945, when she survived the Holocaust as a piano-playing prodigy. Passing as a gentile, she used the alias Anna Morozova and played the piano for Nazi and SS officers in Germany and throughout European war zones. Zhanna made it through this unbearable existence by relying on the last words her father told her," I don't care what you do, just live." Remarkably, Greg Dawson did not learn of his mother's incredible story until he was an adult. He has written two books and created his documentary film, "Sharing in the Spotlight, which focuses on the Dawson families shared experience. The film discusses his mother's wartime experiences and will be enhanced through a discussion session with Greg, and his wife Candy. How has the discovery of his Jewish roots impacted Greg Dawson? He says, "I am more self-aware. I was almost 30 years old when I knew all the details, and I was an established newspaper writer and family man. My mother's situation was clearly way beyond what any sane person would consider "The Last Resort". the perspective of a writer, I thought my mother's history was amazing and astonishing. Please join us for this remarkable story. The Feinstein Foundation has a million dollar match fund and has offered to match any goods or donations that we collect for the Jerry Doliner Food Bank for the months of March and April. These funds will be divided proportionately. We really need your help now so we can get this matching amount. Thank you for the food that your congregation donates to us and thank you George & Eileen Selis for bringing it to us. Thank you Jewish War Veterans for your monthly check and Winn-Dixie for granting the Jerry Doliner Food Bank $5,000. I am certain you have heard of the bombing of rockets near the Gaza line. The children of Netivot, Israel need more bomb shelters. This is a very poor area and many Israeli children have nowhere to go when the rockets fall. We need to build another bomb shelter in that area. 100% of your funds donated to this cause will go towards building a bomb shelter for the children of Netivot, Israel. Locally, we feed the less fortunate and we supply them with backpacks. The least we can do is to make the children of Israel more secure. The Senior Passover Seder was wonderful. We thank all the volunteers and donors who made this happen. Wishing you a happy and healthy Passover. Dr. Aron Newfield, President Gloria Max, Executive Director SPONSOR AN ONEG OR KIDDUSH Celebrate or commemorate your special event by sponsoring an Oneg or Kiddush. PAGE 8 RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWS: Sue Goldberg We are almost through the school year and its been quite a success with our students reaching out to the community with the acts of Tzedakah! As usual the students had a terrific time acting out the story of Purim! We had princesses, pirates, queens and even the adults joined in wearing their costumes! The highlight for many at the Jewish Heritage Festival, well at least the kids was the rock climbing wall, followed by camel rides!!!! Sam Glaser was fabulous on March 25. Anyone who did NOT attend missed a fabulous concert! Thank you to the Jewish Federation for bringing him to B'nai Torah. On April1st, the students will enjoy a model Seder geared to their ages...what fun! It has been a pleasure to welcome Brittany Kisseloff back to Saturday morning services. Brittany has been reading torah and entertaining us with her beautiful voice. It gives us great naches when our post Bar & Bat Mitzvah students return to synagogue & participate in the services. Brian Weiss, Brielle Goldberg & Adam Liebman also participated in Saturday morning services. The religious school wishes the CBT family a Happy Passover! Mark your calendars to attend Shabbat Services May 4th, led by our students. We look forward to seeing everyone attend. The last day of Sunday school is May 6 with a picnic & kickball game. The Bat Mitzvah of Brielle Goldberg is the weekend of May 25th.
