In preparation for Passover, we traditionally give our homes a "cleaning to end all cleanings". The home is scrubbed; the kitchen is ripped apart. The smallest of crumbs is sought out and discarded. In some communities, even the cars are given a Passover cleaning. In our tradition, all of this work is done in an attempt to rid our homes and our lives of Chametz (leavened items like bread or cake). But you could change the word "Chametz" to "schmutz". We all have schmutz that we need to get rid of. The schmutz could be physical, but it also could be metaphorical or emotional baggage that we carry with us. What a wonderful notion it is to rid ourselves of things dragging us down. At our Seders the Haggadah tells us that each of us should feel as if he or she was personally freed from slavery in Egypt. As an historical event, we learn that, but for, the Exodus, and God's decision to take us out of Egypt, we today would still be slaves. Thus, by virtue of the fact that our ancestors were redeemed, we, today, have all literally been redeemed. But it is not always easy SATURDAY MORNING April 5, 2014 10:00 AM SATURDAY MORNING STUDY WITH RABBI HAMMERMAN PASSOVER SERVICES Tuesday, April 15 Wednesday, April 16 Monday, April 21 Tuesday, April 22 (Yiskor) Services begin at 9:30 AM Please help us create a special atmosphere by not using electronic devices (phones, cameras, games etc) in or around the synagogue on Saturday and Holidays. MINYANIM One of our new members, Harris Weisel, will be coordinating minyanim for those who are sitting shiva or observing a yahrzeit. Please contact the office if you would be interested in being notified if a minyan is needed and will attend when possible. 609-492- 4090 or click on this link for EMAIL YAHRZEITS
to use the past as a motivation for a strong feeling today. The question then becomes: "Is there an additional lesson to be learned here"? The answer is yes. When we are told that we should each feel as if we were redeemed from Egypt, we could think of Egypt as not "The" Egypt of the story, but "an" Egypt; a place of personal slavery and hardship. Each of us has an Egypt from which we need to be redeemed. For some it is work, for others it is television, for others it is depression, for others it is chocolate. Whatever our "Egypt" is, we are slaves to it; it brings us down and makes us feel like less than we are. The lesson from God and the Torah is that all slaves, literal and figurative, need help to be relieved of their shackles. This year as Passover comes in make it a point to discover your "Egypt[s]". It is only after we identify a problem that we are then able to begin the task of fixing it. Learn what you are a slave to, but also pay attention to what is shackling your family and friends. Just as the Israelites needed God's help to become free, we, and others, need assistance. Just as God was our redeemer, so too can we be the redeemer to others. Passover is about cleansing and redeeming. We do this in order to renew ourselves. Cleanse, redeem, and renew. Creation and recreation are holy endeavors. Shabbat Shalom - Rabbi Michael S.
