Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 2 Second Sunday of Advent December 4, 2016 The earth shall be filled with knowledge of the L, as water covers the sea. Isaiah 11:9 PREPARE THE WAY Saint John the Baptist appears on the scene today as Advent enters its second week. The mysterious consumer of locusts and wild honey, John echoes the words of the prophet Isaiah as he calls for repentance in the face of the nearness of the kingdom of heaven. The rhythms of the Christian life are often confounding. Each year we meet the Baptist and hear his calls for repentance. Each year we see him pointing to the one who is coming after him, the Lord Jesus. Yet each year the words and actions of John the Baptist echo anew in our hearts, because we have fallen into old sinful traps again and again. Advent gives us the opportunity once again to turn away from our sinful ways and embrace the gospel way of life. John the Baptist invites us to prepare the way for the Lord, in whom we place our hope. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Second Sunday of Advent Page PREPARE THE WAY OF THE LORD, MAKE STRAIGHT HIS PATHS!!! The story is told about a man in the front pew who started snoring in the middle of the homily of a priest at a Sunday Mass. Feeling irritated and quite embarrassed, the priest told the man`s grandson seated beside him:" Little boy, wake up your grandpa!" Where upon, the little boy replied, "Oh no father. You put him to sleep, you wake him up!" In today`s gospel of the second Sunday of Advent, John the Baptist goes about all over Judea waking up people from their "sleep" as "a voice of one crying out in the desert", with a simple and clear message: "Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths"! What made the message of John the Baptist powerful was his very person and his very self. He practiced what he preached. He walked his talk. People were drawn to him because of his utter simplicity and his straightforward messages. He was a prophet who did not put people to sleep. Here was a man, so to say, who comforted the disturbed and disturbed the comfortable. His main exhortation on this second Sunday of Advent is about repentance: "Repent and sin no more. The reign of God is at hand." The full Gospel truth is that repentance means much more than being sorry for our wrongdoings, or changing our mind or attitude. Fruit bearing is the sign of true repentance. John the Baptist has a very clear and simple challenge to all Christians: "Produce good fruits as evidence of your repentance." The key to our Advent journey is repentance which bears good fruits, the fruits of good deeds, in preparation for Christ`s birth. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
