Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 26, 2016 Hello and Thank You, I want to extend a big THANK YOU to all of those who helped organize and put on the St. Joseph Summer Festival we had last Saturday night. I am continuing to get compliments on the event, people saying that they really enjoyed themselves, alumni and past parishioners who were there were glad to visit, one family who even sat in the pew with their grandfather s name still on it. I have to especially thank Betsy Barbieri who headed up the efforts, and Cheryl Verde who I think was the first one she roped into helping, and Steve Topping and the Knights of Columbus for stepping up to take care of the food. I want to list many others, but then I know I will be leaving more out. I also want to thank all who came to celebrate with us. From the Mass to the celebration afterwards it is all meant for the community of people that gather to celebrate. The choir was great, the pews filled up, and the dynamic in the church gave glory to God. By the time I got outside afterwards there were lines for beverages, food was starting to be served, and kids were getting their faces painted and enjoying the clowns and balloons. One final thanks to those who made donations Straub s donated the cake (which there was only one piece left when we were taking things down) Kim Tucci donated the salad from The Pasta House - Schnucks donated the hanging plants and Laura McCarthy donated the bottled water. I thank everyone again for the joyful evening for St. Joseph s parish community. So now the party is over and we are in the midst of summer. As we have the longest days of the year we celebrate the feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist on June 24 th. Born six months before Jesus it is again a reminder that Jesus s birth is celebrated at the shortest days of the year, that the light came into the world and the days grew longer. But as the days grow shorter we remember John s words as some of his disciples questioned the works of Jesus and His disciples, He must increase; I must decrease. (John 3:30) As the days shorten may this be a constant reminder of our need to overcome any selfish aspects of our nature, to be more open to here and follow the light not of ourselves, but of Christ.
