6th Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 2 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 17, 2019 Blessed are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God is yours. Blessed are you who are now hungry, for you will be satisfied. Luke 6:2021a BLESSED When we think of the word Beatitude we think of today s discourse from Luke s Gospel, or the more familiar one from Matthew (which begins Blessed are the poor in spirit... ). Actually, beatitudes occur throughout the prophets and Gospels. Today in Jeremiah (with an echo in the psalm) we hear, Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord (Jeremiah 17:7). Following his resurrection in John s Gospel, Christ proclaims, Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed (John 20:29). The evangelists placed these sayings throughout the Gospels as short reminders about the characteristics that one will find in a follower of Christ, characteristics that will help spread the Good News in this life and lead to eternal blessings in the next. In Latin, the saints are called the Beati, the Blessed, for they are the ones who lived the blessed life as described by Jesus throughout the Gospels. How blest are we, when we also strive to make our own days a living beatitude! Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 4 The Sermon on the Plain I hope you have all seen the beautiful murals that are on the walls of the Beatitudes Room in our Parish Hall. Why did we give our meeting room that name? We named it after the first of those murals which shows Jesus sitting among his disciples and teaching them the Beatitudes during his Sermon on the Mount which is found in St. Matthew s gospel. Today we hear or read Luke s version of the Beatitudes in what has been called the Sermon on the Plain. In Luke s account, we are told that Jesus came down the mountain and taught a large crowd on a level stretch of ground a plain. You might have noticed that Luke s version is a little different than Matthew s. Luke contrasts the poor ( Blessed are you... ) and the rich ( Woe to you... ). But why? Luke emphasizes that the poor who have little are blessed because they rely on God. They trust in God as Jeremiah says in the first reading. While those who are comfortable, happy and popular are in danger of losing the Kingdom because they may become complacent with a feeling of self-made independence and self-importance. Or they may become overly concerned with the comforts of material wealth and the approval of their peers in social media. They trust in the approval of human beings. As the Responsorial Psalm says: Blessed are they who hope in the Lord. On another note, I ask you to prayerfully consider becoming part of our Lector ministry. Trish Jensen does a wonderful job of coordinating this ministry. Please see her announcement in today s bulletin. We have a shortage of lectors at our Saturday Vigil Mass but can use more readers at our other Masses as well so that our talented lectors do not suffer from burn out. The Second Vatican Council calls all of us to be actively and consciously involved in our Worship. Lectors are both active and very conscious because they dive into the Scriptures that they read. And reading is a lot easier than public speaking because you don t have to write a speech, God provides the words for you! Blessings to you all! Deacon John.

February 17, 2019 Page 6 and the Word was God LECTOR MINISTRY Being a lector is both an honor and a commitment. As lectors we are proclaimers of the Word of God at Mass. "When the Sacred Scriptures are read in the Church, God himself speaks to his people" (General Instruction of the Roman Missal, no. 29). The words of Sacred Scripture are a vehicle God uses to reveal himself to us, the means by which we come to know the depth of God's love for us, and the responsibilities entailed by being Christ's followers and members of his Body. As members of Christ s Body, we share in His ministry. Would you prayerfully consider proclaiming the Word at Mass? A short training is provided for new lectors, and all lectors receive a workbook that helps them to understand the readings and pronounce unfamiliar names and words. No impromptu speaking is required God wrote all of the words that we need to speak. Presently, lectors serve every 4-6 weeks at a Mass they normally attend. We have a need at all Masses, but we have a critical need for additional lectors at the Saturday 5:00 Mass. Being a lector involves prayerfully practicing the reading prior to the Mass. For more information, contact: Trish Jensen at (916) 207-4060 or jensentrish1@gmail.com.
