Second Sunday of Advent Page 2 Second Sunday of Advent December 7, 2014 Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill shall be made low. Isaiah 40:4 EXILE Both Isaiah and Peter had the task of comforting and encouraging their communities during times of exile. The Israelites were in geographic exile from Israel; to them this was, in effect, the same as being in exile from their God. The early Christians, following the Resurrection, expected an immediate return of Christ in glory; they, too, felt in exile as the delay of the Second Coming grew longer and longer. All four of scripture s authors today Isaiah, the psalmist, Peter, and Mark hasten to help us see things in God s terms, not ours. They want us to know that we can never truly be exiled from God, or from God-among-us, since we know that when the faithful are gathered, Christ has come into their midst. Instead, we are encouraged today to do what we can from our end to shorten the time of our exile: to repent of our sins, to return our lives to the Lord, to live as people who seek the coming day of the Lord, when kindness and truth shall meet; justice and peace shall kiss (Psalm 85:10). Second Sunday of Advent Page A DAY TO REMEMBER December 7th will always be remembered as Pearl Harbor Day. We were bombed into World War II. It awoke a sleeping giant, it inspired all our people to serve America. But, oh the loss and the sacrifice of our youth. They are now few in number who fought in World War II. Since I came to Auburn I ve had the privilege of knowing three who served our country very well. Mark Osweiler, who led our troops into the concentration camp at Aushwitz and freed those awaiting death in the gas chambers. Francis Ferry and his wife Genevieve used to have breakfast at Denny s and I d often join them for a chat. One day Genevieve showed me a Navy postcard that depicted her husband Francis bombing and sinking the largest battleship Yamato. I said to him I ve never met a war hero. He replied, I m no hero... I did my duty. As a matter of fact every year on the anniversary of Yamato, I spend the day praying for those who went down with the battleship. Lately we officiated at Bill O Brien s funeral. Bill survived a Kamikaze attack on the USS Nashville. He not alone continued serving for the rest of World War II, but he also served during the Korean War. When I was in Luxenberg in 1972, I went to the cemetery where our fallen heroes from the Battle of the Bulge are buried around their Leader, General George Patton. Two years ago I had the privilege of praying for the sailors of the Arizona from the deck of the Missouri in Pearl Harbor. Every time I pass a National Cemetery, I make the Sign of the Cross and say a prayer for those who have served. I also pray for their families. A few times a year I stop and walk around and read the names. It is a spiritual experience to be among the fallen. To feel the immensity of the sacrifices of our military and their families. They are immortal. The impact of Pearl Harbor should not be forgotten. God Bless, Fr. Mike ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Giggles: If you want God to have a laugh, tell Him your future plans. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ As a large funeral was passing by, a man asked a small boy Who died? I think it s the man in the coffin, replied the boy.

EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS NEEDED Ministers of the Eucharist are called to minister to the faithful. To serve as a minister reflects not only a response to your baptismal call, but a commitment to Christ. At this time we are in need of additional EM s for the 5:00pm Saturday and the 5:30pm Sunday Masses. If interested please contact Jean Sawyer at 707-567-2541.
