Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 2 Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time February 19, 2017 Be holy, for I, the L, your God, am holy. Leviticus 19:2b DIVINE WISDOM The Lord s message, through Moses, was to take no revenge and cherish no grudge... love your neighbor as yourself (Leviticus 19:18). We might think, Great in theory, but not always realistic! Then Jesus in today s Gospel goes even further. Take a slap in the face and then turn the other cheek? Treat enemies the same as friends? Again, we re tempted to think that those are nice ideals, but not very practical in the real world. Paul echoes Jesus when he tells the Corinthians that what passes for human wisdom is absurdity to God. Divine wisdom casts sunshine on the good and the bad, showers rain on the honest and the dishonest without distinction. We must examine our wisdom and common sense to see how they compare to the wisdom of God, and make adjustments accordingly. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. 7th Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 4 OUR LIVES SHOULD ALWAYS BE GOVERNED BY LOVE A story is told of children who were playing in the living room. The mother was busy in the kitchen preparing their dinner. The two boys started a fight. The eldest sister stopped them. But she was ignored and the two boys continued fighting. Their sister warned them: " If you continue fighting, Mommy will not love you. "The mother appeared and reprimanded her two sons. She told them to understand each other and to ask apology from each other. The mother told them to remember that she would be sad if her children quarrel. " Will you love us still?" the boys asked their mother. She replied: "Yes, of course, I will always love you. But I will love you with joyful heart if you are good to one another. I will love you still, but with a sorrowful heart, if you have been bad to one another." The gospel passage of this Seventh Sunday of ordinary time reveals the dark side of our human nature. We are a people who have the tendency to make retaliation to every hurt or harm inflicted on us. We can easily trade insult for insult, or injury for injury. As a result, we can nurse hatred and harbor grudges toward those who harm us or to people whom we consider as enemies. Jesus has corrected this attitude and taught us to love everybody and to forgive the offender. He tells His disciples to take the road of love, not hatred, and to take the road of forgiveness, not vengeance. It is neither an easy nor a pleasant road to take. But Jesus gives us that invitation, an invitation to love others as He loves us. What Jesus is telling us is that our life should be governed by LOVE and not by hatred or grudges. He expects that Christians should make a difference in this world by being loving people. If our life is governed by love, then, indeed we are and we become children of the Heavenly Father. Fr Innocent Subiza Parochial Administrator Next weekend, February 25-26, we will once again be given the opportunity to be Christ to others through works of mercy. How do we help a family in need? How do we best help the man or woman along the roadside with a request for money? Do we pass them by? Do we feel guilty? Do we wonder how the money we give might be spent? As Catholics in the Diocese of Sacramento, we have a way to help those truly in need. By making a generous donation to the Annual Catholic Appeal, you can live the Gospel message and provide real assistance. Last year 180 of our parishioners contributed $29,166 to the Appeal. This parish received 25% to serve our local needs, people who came to our doors looking for a bit of help or a hand up. The charitable works of the Church, whether in Catholic social service programs or parish-based outreach ministries, depend on all of us. Each of our gifts, no matter the amount, really does make a difference in someone s life. Please prayerfully consider what you can give. Our gifts to the Annual Catholic Appeal are Mercy in Motion.

Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
