Jay Today is September 11, always a sad and tense day. It is a day that forces us to remember that there is evil in the world. So how is it that I found myself smiling this morning? Read further and you will find out. As I was riding my bicycle early this morning I witnessed a wonderful moment. A very elderly and infirm couple live around the block from my home. I don't know them other than to give an obligatory waive as I am walking home from Synagogue on Shabbat afternoon as they sit on their porch attended to by a nurse. As I passed by their home this morning, I saw another neighbor bringing the morning newspaper from the bottom of the driveway up to the front door of their house. It seems a little gesture, but on this day of remembering evil, I saw this selfless act as proof that there is also great good in this world. How else could one explain a neighbor anonymously bringing a newspaper up to a home-bound neighbor's door other than describing it as "pure good"? And while the beautifully simple act of moving a newspaper a few hundred feet may not counter the gross evil that befell us on this day a few years ago, it is a symbol of the goodness that is in our world. Each little act of kindness creates a light that can ultimately snuff out evil's darkness. In Parashat Nitzavim, the Torah tells of a time of covenantal No ticket necessary MINCHA - MAARIV SERVICE 7:30 PM On the second night, candles should be lit immediately after nightfall, kindled by an existing flame. 7:42 PM SECOND DAY Tuesday, September 18, 2012 2 Tishrei 5773 MORNING SERVICE 9:00 AM TASCHLICH SERVICE immediately after services at the Spray Beach Yacht Club across the boulevard from the JCC. renewal; at time of choice. In describing the future of the Israelite nation the Torah offers the following: "See! Today I have set before you [a free choice] between life and good [on the one side], and death and evil [on the other]." We are given free will. Good and evil exist in the world and it is up to the individual to engage in one or the other. If enough individuals choose "good" then the world, as a whole, will be a better place. God is importantly reminding us that how we live our lives is a decision left to each of us. It is up to each of us to recognize that the state of the world depends on the choices that each individual makes. It is a simple decision; Perhaps as simple as bringing a newspaper up to a neighbor's door. Shabbat Shalom and Shanah Tovah U'metuka - Rabbi Michael S. Jay Rabbi Jay will be conducting Shabbat Services and High Holiday Services beginning this Shabbat through the first Shabbat in November. WALL TO WALL KLEZMER We are excited to announce that the JCC building will be the venue for a wonderful Klezmer concert funded through the Ocean County Library by an Ocean First Grant to be held on Tuesday, October 16th at 3:00 PM. There is no charge for this program. "Wall-to-Wall Klezmer" provides a high-spirited celebration of Jewish folk music and the eastern European shtetl environment from which it sprang. Klezmer's history is explained as each musician talks informally about his own family's ethnic roots and emigration. The audience learns some Yiddish vocabulary, joins with the klezmorim (musicians), and even enacts a traditional Jewish wedding ceremony.
