ARCHDIOCESE OF DETROIT www.aod.org BOOK & GIFT SHOP Open weekends before & after Masses FROM THE PASTOR S DESK By Fr. Terry Kerner Half way through the annual Catholic Services Appeal (CSA), I am happy to report that we are at 110% of our target. This means that any gift made to the annual drive remains in the parish to be used for capital improvements. This year we are looking toward re-sealing and striping of the parking lots. Last year 265 pledges were made allowing us to meet and exceed our parish target by about five thousand dollars. If you have not yet made your gift to the CSA I would encourage you to do so by the end of June. Of course, if you are not in the position to do so it is perfectly understandable. Our parish of St. Kateri can be proud of the generous support of so many parishioners who make the sacrifice to help make the parish flourish. Thank you to all who do so! GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE Have you ever felt judged by your family? St. John Paul II noted that the family "is the cradle of life and love". Yet unmet expectations and divergent priorities can cause tension in even the most loving family situations. This is true for us, and it was true for Jesus! In today's Gospel, Jesus has returned home to Nazareth. A large crowd gathered, and Jesus finds himself facing stiff opposition from his family. This was likely Jesus' large, extended family. The Semitic language has no specific words for extended relatives, so everyone is "brother" or "sister." The entire clan has gotten wind of Jesus' preaching, and they are not amused. "They set out to seize him, for they said, 'He is out of his mind.'" To make matters worse, the religious authorities even accuse Jesus of being possessed by a demon. It's a mess by any standards. The family's perspective is perhaps understandable. In Jewish culture, teachers and scribes underwent intensive schooling and apprenticeships, none of which Jesus had done. The family knew Jesus the carpenter, not Jesus the rabbi. For them, Jesus' bold preaching threatened the reputation of their family! Jesus' words to his family can seem controversial. "Who are my mother and my brothers?" Yet Jesus knows what he is about. He has always known he would be about the business of his Heavenly Father. And what is that business? It is the business of the new covenant and the Kingdom of God. In this Kingdom, we are all adopted sons and daughters of the King. Jesus begins, even now, to expand the perspective of his listeners. Being welcomed into this family does not depend on our families of birth or ethnic origin, but a wholehearted commitment to "do the will of God."

Page 2 FAITH FORMATION By Grace Lakatos I often hear my mother s voice as the weekend draws near. One of her favorite sayings was, There was only one perfect child born...and he wasn t born at this house. I think this pops into my mind on those occasions when I am tempted to catch up on all the good things around the house on Sunday. You know the drill: fix the leaking faucet, weed out those last couple flower beds, finish up the laundry, gather up the vacation supplies or send out that anniversary card. Those are all good things and they do need to be done, BUT...they are tempting me to choose captivity of activity over what God says is more important. With that being said here are 10 reasons to go to Church even when you don t feel like it. Hearing the Word of God penetrates our hearts, transforms our lives, calls us to repent and provides encouragement, inspiration and enlightenment in close fellowship with one another. Strength in Numbers is the beauty of worshipping as a community and is our humble response of gratitude to God for His unconditional love, mercy and forgiveness. Iron Striking Iron not only is sharpened but sparked. We are often bumped and bruised in daily life with our weaknesses exposed but coming together in the celebration of the Mass grows our love for the Lord and others, leaving those who bump and bruise us in our past. Exercising Your Gifts from God and used to serve God is a blessing to yourself and the Church and a way of thanking God for those gifts. A Pastor s Encouragement is seen on his face and in his words as he gives thanks to God for your faithfulness to God and the parish. Godly Mentoring is a Two Way Street as we look around the parish for wisdom and guidance from those who have walked the rugged road ahead of us while keeping an eye open on who God may want us to mentor. Children See & Hear All of what we do each and every day. If you want them to love God, they need to see and hear that you love God. And that means going to Church. A Beacon of Light shines forth from God s disciples in the realm of acceptance and belonging when we commit to fiercely loving God and each other and readily forgiving others and ourselves. Lighten the Load that life has thrown you with the blessings of loving concern, support and prayer from those gathered together in the pews around you. Because HE Said So knowing that our time attending Mass is for our own good, God wants to capture our hearts, especially as days of societal sadness and darkness threaten the brightest of days. My thanks to Rhonda Stoppe, a Baptist minister s wife, for shaking things up for me with her writings and inspiration and to all of you for reading along. See you in Church. St. Anthony of Padua is more than the patron saint for lost items. By his life, he shows a special interest in lost souls. St. Anthony was born to noble parents, but he preferred a simple life of faith to the riches of his childhood. He joined the Franciscan order in 1220. He quickly became known for his eloquence in preaching. He had a way of reaching all sorts, from nobles to clergy to those who had fallen away from the Catholic faith. In addition to preaching, St. Anthony organized supplies for the poor and negotiated release for prisoners of war between Italian city-states. However you or your loved ones feel lost this week, pray for St. Anthony's intercession!
