EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 5, 2018 Most Reverend Edward K. Braxton Bishop of Belleville We, the people of St. Clare Catholic Parish, In the Diocese of Belleville, are called by God in baptism to be disciples of Jesus Christ. Centered in the Eucharist, and strengthened by the gifts of the Holy Spirit, we strive to live the Gospel and further the reign of God. We do this by creating a vibrant faith community, by actively promoting justice and evangelization, and by using our gifts in the service of God s people, to give God glory and reverence all of Creation. From Our Pastor, Fr. Jim... Centered in the Eucharist...Using Our Time Well This week at St. Clare Parish we begin our prayer and discernment about the Stewardship of our Time and Talent. All active parishioners are receiving a booklet with a description of the many ministries we invite you to be a part of. Read through each ministry and pray about where you can share your time to bless our parish, God s Kingdom, and help others. As our lives seem to get busier, it is easy to think that we don t have time for one more thing. Discernment is about reflecting on how we are living the short, beautiful life that God gives us. Living out our baptismal call to serve is supposed to be our main priority. Setting aside part of our time each week for praising God at Mass and daily prayer and serving in parish ministries is how we keep our Christian vocation a priority considering our other commitments. I want to thank all of you who already volunteer in one or several ministries. I am especially grateful for our ministry leaders who help us organize our volunteers and keep our parishioners engaged. If you are new to the parish or have been wondering how to get better connected to your parish, please take extra time to look through this Stewardship Booklet and sign up for a ministry. Please Note: The BLUE ministry cards are to be filled out for NEW AND CONTINUING Ministries. Please fill out your card and return it to Mass on the weekend of August 11/12, the feast of our patroness, St. Clare of Assisi. The YELLOW ministry cards are for Liturgical Ministries only and are to be filled out for NEW sign ups. God s peace be with you, Fr. Jim Deiters Time and talent are God s great gifts to you. What you do with them is your gift of gratitude to God! Recent Deaths: Genevieve Fleming, Mother and Grandmother of Tom & Mary, Nick, Maggie, Peter, Kelly, Colin & Evan Fleming Shirley Ann Rodowsky, Grandmother of Heather & Joe, Hanna & Gretchen Ertel May they rest in the peace and loving embrace of Christ and may God reward them for all the good they did during their life! Please continue to pray for comfort and peace for all who are mourning the death of a loved one. Last September, we dedicated 24 hours of prayer during Eucharistic Adoration for the US Supreme Court to hear and rule in favor of free speech rights of Pro-Life Pregnancy Centers in California. In 2015 the Reproductive FACT Act was passed in California, which mandated that Pro Life pregnancy Centers disperse information about how to obtain state-funded abortions. Illinois and Hawaii also passed similar legislation. The US Supreme Court heard this case and this month ruled that the law was unconstitutional. This ruling will almost certainly overturn the Illinois and Hawaii laws as well. We will have information and intentions available at Adoration as well as a communal prayer at 11 a.m. Monday. Please join us! Eucharistic Adoration Sunday, August 5 After 10:30 Mass Until Monday, August 6 11:45 Benediction/Mass at Noon Sign up sheets are on the round table in the Gathering Space, or you may come to pray at any time. Sacred Sounds & Sights A Concert Celebrating Beauty St. Clare of Assisi Church Sunday, August 12, 2018 2:00 pm Choirs of St. Clare Church and School Comments on Art & Architecture - presented by Fr. Jim Deiters Volunteers Needed for Front Desk Receptionist for Catholic Urban Programs If you have considered volunteering your time for a very worthwhile cause, here s an excellent opportunity. Due to an ever-increasing number of clients to be served, CUP is seeking volunteers to work as a receptionist at the front desk in their East St. Louis Office which is located at #7 Vieux Carre Drive (Loisel Village area immediately off Route 157). Office hours are Monday thru Friday from 9 a.m. 12 Noon and 1 4 p.m. Volunteers are needed for half-days (approximately four (4) hours) on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and/or Friday. Duties include: answering phones; greeting people; assisting people with applications and directing people to proper staff. No experience is required; however, you must enjoy working with the public and have good people skills and basic computer skills are helpful. If you have a morning or afternoon or a day or two available to volunteer, please call Gerry Hasenstab at 618-398-5616, Ext. 203, for additional information. Thank you so much. I never knew that volunteering to help others could change my life, but it did when I said yes to a request to volunteer at St. Vincent DePaul in East St Louis. While in today's big world it is sometimes hard to feel like you are making a difference, I guarantee you that not a day will go by in your volunteer journey where you don't feel you had a positive impact on someone's life. Ken Smith Your Giving July 28/29 Weekly Envelope $11,579.00 WeShare $ 2,032.00 Direct Deposit $ Total Tithe $13,611.00 Church Mortgage $800.00 As a second grader, I began to consider a call to the priesthood by marrying my friends on the playground and hearing confessions in the bushes. But in high school, my faith began to wane. While in college, I became so tired of being a lukewarm Catholic that I needed something to change.the Lord led me to a classmate who was on fire with her faith and I asked about spiritual practices. She recommended four things: daily Mass, frequent confession, adoration and serving the poor. I came up with a timeframe for God to change my heart: three months. He did it in one. Fr.
