Issue 1 August 2008 Knights of Columbus 6695 Knights Newsletter Our New Grand Knight Special points of interest: Fishing Rodeo is on September 13th at Steele Creek Park. 2nd Degree Ceremony is on August 23rd in Johnson City. Don t be a missing Knight please attend one of our activities, soon. Make sure you update or give us your correct email address to receive this newsletter via email. Brother Knights Well, here we are at the start of a new fraternal year. Working together, we could make this a very good year. During the last fraternal year we lost our beloved chaplain, Deacon Harry, who we will all miss vey much. At the beginning of this fraternal year we were happy to learn Fr. Tim consented to be our new chaplain. He has some great ideas that you will hear about later. Our new slate of officers are a great team. I m looking forward to be working with them to make this a great fraternal year. Our goal this year will be the recruiting of new members, especially the younger men. We hope to get them interested in our future plans so they may go through the chairs and take up leadership of the council in the future. We are very happy to welcome back Brother Knight, Tony Fitton who has jumped into work with both feet (we promise to keep his mind and hands busy, also). He is our new Communications Director and will be PGK Bill Davidson s Co-Program Director. Vivat Jesus, Lewis Pingo, PFN, PGK, GK. Knights Newsletter Welcome to Father Tim our new Chaplain Father Tim Keeney Chaplain Knights of Columbus Council 6695 The Knights of Columbus Council 6695 mourn the passing of our beloved Chaplain, Deacon Harry, who served our Council for over 20 years and will be greatly missed. A Prayer for Deacon Harry: Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord, And let perpetual Light shine upon them. May their souls And the souls of all the faithful departed Through the mercy of God Rest in Peace Amen. We are blessed and greatly appreciate Father Tim accepting to be our new Chaplain. Welcome, Father Tim, from all your brother Knights at Council 6695. Father Tim will act as spiritual advisor to all brother knights and families of the council. He will report at council meetings and give a brief talk on religious matters. Father Tim will also serve as advisor to our Church activities director. Message from the Chaplain The greatness of a man is not always defined by what he has done but what he has the potential to do! Sacred Heart of Jesus Dear Brother Knights, I could not begin this Chaplain s Corner without calling to mind our beloved Deacon Harry. For so many years he gave himself to the spiritual welfare of this council and all his brother knights. Please continue to keep him and Pat in your prayers. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul rest in peace, Amen. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, especially our brother knights, rest in peace, Amen. I also want to thank the council for asking me to serve as your chaplain. I will not be able to be at a majority of the meetings, because of conflicts with my schedule, but I have committed to put a significant number of meetings on my calendar. I will also be looking for other ways to fulfill the office of Chaplain for the council. One will be these columns, but there are other ways as well. I am hoping to start this year a monthly men s Communion Breakfast on the Saturday joined to the First Sunday of the month. The focus of these Communion Breakfasts would be men s spirituality. I would like especially reach out to the younger men in our parish with this powerful practice. It would consist of daily Mass, breakfast during which a short spirituality talk would be given. All told it would last about an hour and a half. I have approached some of our parishioners to help plan these events, but my hope is that the Knights would want to sponsor them at the Columbian Center. It seems to me that this kind of approach is something that is very consistent with the original vision of the Knights of Columbus. It also could be a vehicle for attracting younger members to the Knights. Please let me know what you think. Your Chaplain, Fr. Tim Page 2

Issue 1 16th Annual Fishing Rodeo 2008 The 16th Annual Fishing Rodeo 2008 is to be held at Steele Creek Park this year. Because of the low water levels at Observation Knob Park over the last couple of years it was decided to move the event. We are very happy with the new location and the help and support we have received from the City Parks Department. Indeed the Fishing Rodeo is now an official event for the City of Bristol! The planning stage is well underway, tee-shirts have been printed, sponsors contacted and press and TV lined up. We will be on WCYB Channel 5 TV on Tuesday the 9th of September noon show! Please tune in to watch if you can. There is a flyer printed on the next to last page of this newsletter feel free to copy it and pin it up somewhere around town or send it to someone who has kids that like to fish. Date : September 13 th 2008 Time : 8.00a.m. to 12 Noon Location : Steele Creek Park Description : The event is free for the kids to enter with 3 age groups with both grand (bicycle) and multiple prizes, free t-shirts, free bait, free hot-dog lunch with drinks and each kid gets a goodie bag filled with vouchers. Each kid entered also takes home a free fishing rod. The 16th Annual Fishing Rodeo 2008 - Knights Provide the Shade... The Knights of Columbus Council 6695 kindly paid for the rental of a 30 x 50 tent to provide shade for our fellow parishioners during the picnic. The Church Picnic was held on Sunday July 27th 2008. The tent was a big hit with everyone. Are you a Missing Member? Knights in Action Demolishing a shed for local woman. Thanks Guys! Issue 1 Knights of Columbus International Convention Delegates to the annual international convention of the Knights of Columbus adopted a resolution opposing "any governmental action or policy that promotes abortion, embryonic stem cell research, human cloning, euthanasia, assisted suicide and other offenses against life." The delegates also challenged "our fellow Catholics who are elected officials to be true to the faith they claim to profess by acting bravely and publicly in defense of life, affirming with Pope Benedict XVI that 'there can be no room for purely private religion.'" The resolution stated that the organization reaffirms its "commitment to building a culture of life by promoting policies that favor the family," and reaffirmed the organization's "long standing policy of not inviting to any Knights of Columbus event persons, especially public officials or candidates for public office, who do not support the legal protection of unborn children." The resolution on life issues follows by several days the opening convention address by Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson, in which he called on Catholic voters to "stop accommodating pro-abortion politicians," and encouraged them to "say 'no' to every candidate of every political party who supports abortion." Delegates also adopted a resolution calling for "legal and constitutional protection... for the definition of marriage as the union of one man and one woman to the exclusion of all others." The resolution declares that "marriage is a natural institution based on ancient human values that have evolved over time into a unique and deeply rooted social, legal and religious institution," and that it "reflects the natural biological complementarity between man and woman which predates the state and which is woven into the social and religious fabric of every major culture and society." Marriage between man and woman "provides the most favorable environment in which to protect the rights and the best interests of children," the resolution stated. Convention delegates adopted resolutions dealing with other public policy issues as well, including building a culture of life, religious liberty, the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, decency on the Internet and in the media, Catholic education, and the Pledge of Allegiance. The texts of all the resolutions can be found at: http://www.kofc.org/un/eb/ en/convention_2008/ resolutions/index.html For complete coverage of convention events, go to the "Convention Central" web page at: http://www.kofc.org/un/eb/ en/convention_2008/ index.html PRO LIFE Page 5
