My fiancée and I are planning our wedding for next year. We still have to attend classes and meet with a priest. What should we expect from the classes? Does the priest test us to see if we are ready to be married? For many years the church has tried to help couples prepare for marriage. The rising divorce rate, as well as the recognition of marriage as a sacrament, led to the development of Marriage Prep Dialogues and Engaged Encounter Weekends. Both programs are designed to encourage couples to discuss the basic fundamentals of relationship within the context of marriage: communication, finance, sexuality, spirituality and values and goals. Open and honest dialogue, as well as a sense of shared values, can make a big difference in a marriage. The classes are not a "how to" course, but provide information and encouragement as you discuss how you will live your married life. The married sponsor couples in these programs often share their own experience and information as a guide and example. The priest may give some spiritual insights on how living the sacrament of marriage differs from the legal understanding of marriage. He is not there to test you, but rather to help you cover all the bases and be certain that you and your future spouse are well-informed and prepared to take on the responsibilities and commitment of marriage. The goal of marriage is union and love. Openness, honesty, trust, and love are the glue that keeps couples together for a lifetime. More than 1.5 Million couples in 92 countries have experienced a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend. They found something worth passing on. Register for a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend today! Upcoming dates: April 12th 14th in Ankeny May 3rd 5th in Dubuque, September 20th - 22nd in Cedar Falls and November 1st 3rd in Coralville. For More Information visit our website at iowa-wwme.org or call 563-608-3305 Please join us for Mass and a presentation about Annulments On Sunday, February 10, Fr. Dan Dorau, the Parochial Vicar at Divine Mercy Parish in Burlington, will give a presentation titled, "How can I be a priest having been married?" Fr. Dan grew up in northwest Iowa before going to Loras College in Dubuque, where he met and later married his wife. After an advanced degree, he worked in information technology and banking while raising four children. After 25 years the marriage ended in divorce and eight years later he entered the seminary for the Davenport Diocese. He was ordained to the priesthood in May of 2017 and served one year in Davenport before being assigned to Divine Mercy in Burlington and West Burlington. His talk will center on the Church's teaching about the Sacrament of Marriage, the annulment process, and his personal story with a Q & A period. Mass is at 5:30pm with a presentation immediately following at 6:30pm. All are welcome to attend. We encourage you to extend an invitation to those family and friends who are going through or have been through a divorce. Each week, The Catholic Messenger reflects the life of the church throughout the world with an emphasis on diocesan news, parishes and our Catholic schools. Learn how other Catholics are living out their faith and the joys and struggles that come with it. Keep informed as Bishop Thomas Zinkula shares teachings that inspire as well as educate. The Messenger is a real value at $29 for 50 issues, print or e-edition. Subscribe by sending a check or cash in an envelope marked for the messenger through the parish office or in the collection basket. A Bible Study on the Book of Revelation will begin on Monday, February 4th at St. Mary's Parish Office at 6:30 pm. The 10 week course will meet every other Monday evening. To register or if you have any questions, please give Dixie a call at 837-8905. Did you know these fun facts about the Catholic Church? The ONLY Christian church in existence for the first 1,000 years of Christian history was the Roman Catholic Church. All other Christian churches which exist today can trace their linage back to the Roman Catholic Church. Most non-catholic churches which exist today are less than a century or two old by comparison. The Catholic Church consists of more than just the Roman Catholic Church. There are 22 Eastern Rites that are in full communion with Rome and although they go by different names, they are every bit as much a part of the Catholic Church.
