(Closed Sundays) TODAY S READINGS First Reading Isaiah speaks of the Servant whom the Lord upholds; he shall bring forth justice to the nations (Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7) or Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11. Psalm The Lord will bless his people with peace (Psalm 29) or Psalm 104. Second Reading Jesus was anointed by God with the Holy Spirit; he went out healing and doing good (Acts 10:34-38) or Titus 2:11-14; 3:4-7. Gospel A voice comes from heaven proclaiming Jesus as the beloved Son, with whom God is well pleased (Luke 3:15-16, 21-22). CALLED TO SERVE For many weeks now, we have been celebrating the appearance of the divine presence in human form. As a child, he came to Mary and Joseph, was seen by the shepherds, and then by some wandering magi from the East. Today we celebrate another showing, later in time, to a group gathered at the Jordan River. John hesitated to baptize Jesus, whom he recognized as one mightier than I. But he did as Jesus asked, and the Holy Spirit descended and heaven s voice spoke to Jesus, You are my beloved Son. Jesus was beginning his public life of teaching and service. Soon he would start calling others to join him. Peter was one of the first to be called by Jesus. In today s second reading, he announces the heart of the message, peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. Peter was called, and you and I are called to spread that message and to serve God s word. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

First Sunday of Advent - THE December BAPTISM 3, 2017 OF THE LORD - JANUARY 13, 2019 Today is the last Sunday of the Christmas Season; this may seem strange to many as we usually think of the Christmas Season as the events surrounding the infancy of Jesus: his birth, the visits of the shepherds and the magi, his circumcision, naming and presentation in the Temple as a new-born child: all these things happening while Jesus was a baby. However, in today's Gospel, Jesus is an adult; in fact, in the very next verse after today s Gospel passage, we read: When Jesus began his ministry he was about thirty years of age... (Luke 3: 23). Last Sunday, we celebrated the feast of the Epiphany. The word epiphany means manifestation, appearance or revelation. At one time in the church s history: The scope to Epiphany expanded to include the commemoration of his birth; the visit of the magi, all of Jesus' childhood events, up to and including the Baptism by John the Baptist; and even the miracle at the wedding at Cana in Galilee (Wikipedia). Tomorrow, then, begins the Season of Ordinary Time. In earlier times (before easily-available calendars and i-phones), it was the custom to announce the moveable feasts on the Catholic calendar on the Feast of the Epiphany. Here is the script for what could have been read last Sunday, January 6: Know, dear brothers and sisters, that, as we have rejoiced at the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ, so by leave of God s mercy we announce to you also the joy of his Resurrection, who is our Savior. On the Sixth day of March will fall Ash Wednesday and the beginning of the fast of the most sacred Lenten season. On the Twenty-first day of April you will celebrate with Joy Easter Day, the feast of our Lord Jesus Christ. On the Second day of June will be the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ. On the Ninth day of June, the feast of Pentecost. On the Twenty-third day of June, the feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. On the First day of December, the First Sunday of Advent of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom is honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen. Ordinary Time always falls in two blocks: 1) from Monday after the Feast of the Baptism of our Lord until Tuesday before Ash Wednesday: in 2019, January 14 to March 5; and 2) from Monday after the Feast of Pentecost until Saturday before the First Sunday of Advent: in 2019, June 10 to November 30. (By the way, Easter this year is almost as late as possible; the very latest possible Easter date is April 25; the last time it fell on April 25 was in 1943; the next time is 2038!) The Baptism of the Lord January 13, 2019 He saved us through the bath of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. Titus 3:5 Have a great week! Page 4

First Sunday of Advent THE - December BAPTISM 3, OF 2017 THE LORD - JANUARY 13, 2019 The New Beginnings Ministry at Holy Spirit Catholic Church is pleased to offer the DRAW IT OUT program.
