OFFICE HOURS Monday-Thursday 8:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m. Closed for lunch 12:00 1:00 p.m.; Friday 8:00 a.m.-12 Noon p.m. SEEK THE LORD In today s opening reading, Isaiah urges us to seek the LORD who is near and can be found (Isaiah 55:6). Then Isaiah says God s ways are as high above our ways as the heavens are above the earth (Isaiah 55:9). So we search, not because God is hiding, but because our tendencies are so different from God s ways that we get lost. How are God s ways so high above our ways? The example Isaiah gives is that God s way is to be generous in forgiving (Isaiah 55:7). And our way? We try to be fair. You hurt me, so then I hurt you back, just as hard. Then, of course, you.... And on it goes. In today s Gospel Jesus teaches that God is not fair like that. Instead, God is so generous we can hardly understand it. The same wage for one hour as for a whole day of work? Not fair! Seek the Lord, and we might find a God who calls us to be, not fair, but generous beyond expectations. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

As stated in my column two weeks ago, there are going to be a number of Fundraisers for the Capital Campaign. Now, these may not raise money in the thousands-ofdollars-range, but they will achieve several important things, namely: 1. Monies will be raised for the Capital Campaign and truly every little bit (or big bit!) counts. 2. These events will be an ever-constant reminder that we are in a Fund-Raising mode. 3. They will be an opportunity not only to raise funds but to have FUN besides. It is very important, in the life of a parish, to have social events as a way to mingle with your fellow parishioners in a casual setting and to meet new people. So.. THIS coming Saturday, September 21, we are have just such a Fund-Raiser. It is sponsored by our Holy Spirit Knights of Columbus Council. Jamaica Me Better! At night our group of 23 would gather on the open, second floor porch at Sophie s Place for prayer and reflection. On Sunday night, after our first full day there, we were asked to use one word to describe our experience thus far. I chose the word transformative because of something that had happened several times that day. It would happen over and over on that trip: the shift from feeling a stranger to one who is welcomed, included and valued. Whether it was at the Mass at St. Martin de Porres, where we were kindly absorbed into the local community s sweet blessings or the aunties gracious support of our feeding efforts twice a day or the slow but eventual reception by the HIV positive, pregnant or newly mothering teens and preteens we visited or the wildly enthusiastic greetings we got from some residents at the different Mustard Seed Communities or even the warm camaraderie that developed between the mission members - that shift into connectedness and belonging struck me again and again. A tender openness, nurtured by that sense of belonging, ushered in a kind of willingness that made interaction somehow less awkward and intimidating. How to communicate was often not obvious but with a sense of belonging and the vulnerability to just be present, unexpected but meaningful connection seemed to flow. An example of this occurred for me at midday Mass at the chapel in Jerusalem after a morning of weeding. Sweaty and dirty, I headed for the back looking for Bill and an open window. There sat a young woman, hair well tended, nicely dressed, eagerly beckoning me to sit next to her. Her almond eyes crinkled and she smiled as took I her hand. She then proceeded to drape her upper body over my legs and seemed to fall into a deep sleep! As I began to wonder how we would participate in the Mass, up she rose at the appropriate moment to stand. This was the dance we created: she stood at the right time and quickly resumed her drape otherwise. We never spoke but stayed in close connection for the whole mass, belonging to each other. Then, abruptly, she left to push her friend s wheelchair out of the church. There were many other encounters that seemed equally supported in spirit and left that sense of belonging. From so many of the residents and staff at Mustard Seed, especially the aunties, I observed a humble ability to stay open, kind and present. As I re-enter my world in Las Vegas, I intend to stay alert and receptive to that transformative (Holy) spirit in my relationships. I know that it means checking my own criticism, judgment, impatience and intolerance on a regular basis. I am grateful to all my new teachers for their examples. Cindy Drew Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Our atrium sessions have begun! Thursday s 4:00 to 5:30 By the time you read this, our third class will have happened. Our first class for being chaos was grand. After we convinced the parents the children would be fine.we learned to walk on the line and talk with an atrium voice. (The first weeks are spent on learning to have atrium behavior ). By the end of the class, chaos was replaced with eager curiosity of who this Good Shepherd could be. We toured, talked, danced, cried and laughed. This week we are hoping that the routine will start and falling in love begins! Atrium parents if you did not sign up to be a part of the atrium for a day or flowers - the list will always be available in the atrium. If you are just curious about the program we ask that you come and visit. Help us for a day, just observe or volunteer to help with materials. There is always something to be cut out! We would like to thank Anne Anderson for the beautiful Baptismal gowns that she lovingly donated to the atrium! For more information: Teresa Chisholm 702-292-2234 chisholm.tm@cox.net Page 5
