Liturgy at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church September 18, 2016 + 10:30 a.m. Lectionary 25c As we are invited today to consider what it means to be managers (rather than owners) of all that we have, it is crucial to recall that we are bought with a price. Christ Jesus, himself human,... gave himself a ransom for all. Apart from the generosity of God we have nothing we are nothing. By God s gracious favor we have everything we need.

Prelude Prelude (From Cello Suite no. 2 in d minor) J. S. Bach (1685-1750) Help Us Create SACRED SPACE by powering down Please do not use cell phones and other electronic devices. GATHERING The ringing of the meditation bowl calls us to silence, centering and reflection as we prepare for worship. At the conclusion of the introduction to the hymn stand and face the rear of the nave. Turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. INCENSE used in festive processions, adds the sense of smell in worship and shows the significance of our bodies and all of God s creation. The clouds of incense represent purification and the rising of our prayers. Used in many religions, incense has roots in both Judaism and Christianity. Gathering Hymn Presentation Profession of Faith #669 Rise Up, O Saints of God Assembly response: We do. Renunciation of Evil BAPTISM Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. [2]

Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our god. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Thanksgiving at the Font Baptism After each baptism the song is sung twice. Text: Galatians 3:27, International Commission on English in the Liturgy 1969 ICEL; Music [BAPTIZED IN CHRIST], Howard Hughes, b. 1930 1977 ICEL. Clothing with a White Robe Laying on of Hands Signing with the Cross Presentation of a Candle Presider: Let us welcome the newly baptized. We welcome you into the body of Christ and the mission we share; join us in giving thanks and praise to God and bearing God s creative and redeeming word to all the world. Welcome The presiding minister bows toward the assembly which is the body of Christ and the primary symbol of God s presence in the liturgy. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Let us pray Amen ~ be seated ~ [3] Greeting Prayer of the Day

First Reading Amos 8:4-7 WORD By setting Amos s condemnation of those who with dishonesty oppress the poor next to Luke 16, the lectionary underlines both vv. 10-13 of the gospel reading, that believers are to serve God rather than material wealth, and vv. 8-9, that in view of the coming eschaton, believers need to anticipate the possibility of God s punishment. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Psalm 113 Bless the Lord, O Saints and Servants Text: Michael Morgan 2011 Michael Morgan, admin. Faith Alive Christian Resources. Music [AUSTRIAN HYMN]: Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) P.D. [4]

Not only are Christians to pray for their rulers, but to thank God for them. The true ruler over believers is God. This counsel towards societal concord was directed to people who were not in a democracy, and passages such as this have encouraged some Christians into a social passivity. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Stand to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. Second Reading 1 Timothy 2:1-7 Gospel Acclamation Setting: John Helgen The cantors sing first and the assembly repeats. Live your life in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ; strive side by side for the faith of the gospel. (Phil. 1:27) The children of light are called to be faithful to what has genuine value the riches of the kingdom. God is our master, from whom come sometimes unlikely judgments about human life. Even the old one-year lectionary included this gospel, which is a considerable challenge for the preacher. The holy gospel according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia (sung as above) ~ be seated ~ Following the sermon there is a time of silence for reflection and quiet meditation. Our liturgy is not only made up of words, gestures and music, but also moments of silence. ~ please stand ~ Gospel Luke 16:1-13 As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. Sermon Silence [5]

Hymn of the Day For the Healing of the Nations Text: Fred Kaan (1929-2009), alt., Hope Publishing Company. Music [WESTMINSTER ABBEY]: adapt. From an anthem of Henry Purcell (1659-1695), by Ernest Hawkins (1807-1868) Prayers of Intercession Peace The assembly is invited to share God s peace with one another saying, Peace be with you, or similar words. After each petition: Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. ~ be seated ~ [6]

I got a robe up in-a that kingdom, ain t-a that good news! I got a Savior in that kingdom, ain t that good news! I got a home up in-a that kingdom, ain t-a that good news! ~ please stand ~ [10]

SENDING Having heard the word and shared the eucharist, we are sent to live our baptism through words and deeds, making known the love of Christ, and working for justice and peace in our families, communities, and world. Turn to face the cross as it recesses, you may bow as it passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. #604 O Christ, Our Hope Go in peace. Remember the poor. Thanks be to God! Blessing Sending Hymn Sending Postlude Trumpet Tune Nicholas Bowden Following the liturgy, several things happen simultaneously: some folks greet one another and converse; others listen to the organ postlude; and others move to the front of the church for a time of refreshments and social time. WHAT WE VALUE Our worship is ancient and new We celebrate a liturgy based on ancient patterns and rituals that go back to the early centuries of Christianity. We gather for worship to hear the scriptures and wrestle with their meaning for our lives today. We share the sacred meal of bread and wine and depart to serve a world in need. Though ancient, worship is always fresh and new as the gospel of Christ comes alive for our contemporary context. Time unplugged from electronic devices allows reflection and centering. Open to the Mystery we connect, strengthen and serve with joy. Things we re for Radical inclusivity regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, socio-economic status, sexual orientation or religious/spiritual background. Embodied gathering in real time and sacred space. Multisensory liturgy that helps us delight in God s beauty. Intentional engagement with contemporary social, theological and spiritual issues. User-friendly liturgies. Preaching that is honest about the struggles of life and the grace of God. Robust congregational singing. Reverence and joy in worship that spills over into everyday life. Cultivating empowering relationships, not only at church but everywhere. Openness to questions and faith struggles. Treasuring mystery above certainty. Things we re against Power and privilege that lead to prejudice and oppression. Racism, sexism, heterosexism and ableism. A religion that claims to have all the answers. Senseless violence. Negative and hateful partisanship. Superficial responses to life s painful and difficult realities. Boring sermons. Church services that don t connect with everyday life. Equating Christianity with the Religious Right. Indifference to injustice and suffering. Misuse of the earth and its resources. [18]
