::: Gathering ::: Prelude Adagio for Violin and Organ Enrico Bossi (1861-1925) The ringing of the meditation bowl calls us to silence, centering and reflection as we prepare for worship. Following the introduction to the hymn, please stand and face the rear. Turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. Gathering Hymn O Day Full of Grace [2]

Text: Scandinavian folk hymn; Nikolai F. S. Grundtvig, 1783-1872; tr. composite. Music: DEN SIGNEDE DAG, Christoph E. F. Weyse, 1774-1842. The presiding minister bows toward the assembly which is the body of Christ and the primary symbol of God s presence in the liturgy. Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Canticle of Praise Glory to God [3]

Prayer of the Day First Reading Isaiah 49:1-7 Psalm 40:1-11 Setting: John Folkening The refrain is sung by the cantor and repeated by the assembly. The verses are sung alternating between the cantor and the assembly. Let us pray Amen. ~ be seated ~ Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Refrain: Tone: ::: Word ::: The second Servant Song is appointed for this day to develop further the meaning of Jesus Christ and the significance of baptism for the Christians. The church has seen in the Servant Songs descriptions of Jesus Christ, who himself is the light of the nations, and has applied this passage also to baptism, as God calls the baptized to be servants to bring light to the world. I waited patiently up- on the LORD, who stooped to me and heard my cry. [4]

The LORD lifted me out of the desolate pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a high cliff, making my footing sure. The LORD put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; many shall see, and stand in awe, and put their trust in the LORD. Happy are they who trust in the LORD! They do not turn to enemies or to those who follow lies. Refrain Great are the wonders you have done, O LORD my God! In your plans for us, none can be com- pared with you! Oh, that I could make them known and tell them! But they are more than I can count. Sacrifice and offering you do not desire; you have opened my ears: burnt-offering and sin-offering you have not required. Refrain And so I said, "Here I am; I come. In the scroll of the book it is writ- ten of me: 'I love to do your will, O my God; your law is deep within me.'" I proclaimed righteousness in the great assembly; I have not restrained my lips, O LORD, you know. I have not hidden your righteousness in my heart; I have spoken of your faithfulness and your deliverance; I have not concealed your steadfast love and truth from the great assembly. You are the LORD; do not withhold your com- passion from me; may your steadfast love and your truth continually keep me safe. Refrain Over the course of the three years in the weeks between Epiphany and Lent, the lectionary appoints semicontinuous readings from 1 Corinthians, chosen because this seminal letter of Paul describes the communal life expected among believers and calls them to lives of love. Today's selection speaks of the church as called to be saints who call upon Jesus' name, one way that Christians have described baptism. Second Reading 1 Corinthians 1:1-9 Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. [5]

Gospel Acclamation Sung by the cantor, repeated by the assembly. Stand to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. In the Word was life, and the life was the light of all people. (John 1:4) Gospel John 1:29-42 As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. Sermon Silence Hymn of the Day Prayers of Intercession Peace The assembly is invited to share God s peace with one another saying, Peace be with you, or similar words. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. As is often the case, John's gospel presents a more developed Christology than do the synoptic gospels. John's account of Jesus' baptism develops the meaning of the baptism by providing more Christological titles. Christ is the sacrificial lamb, the teacher from God, and the one anointed to save the world. The holy gospel according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. (sung as above) Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. ~ be seated ~ Following the sermon there is a time of silence for reflection and quiet meditation. Our liturgy is not only made up of words, gestures and music, but also moments of silence. ~ please stand ~ #715 Christ Be Our Light After each petition: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. ~ be seated ~ [6]

::: Meal ::: Guests are invited to fill out the welcome slip in the pew and place it in the offering plate. #737 He Comes to Us as One Unknown ~ please stand ~ Offertory Hymn Great Thanksgiving The thanksgiving includes the following responses: [7]

[8]

The Lord s Prayer As a sign of openness to the divine presence, you may join the presider in praying the Our Father with the ancient gesture of extended hands. All are welcome at Christ's table, including children. Bread is received in the hands. Wine is received either by drinking from the (silver) common cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the second (glass) cup. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing, keeping your hands folded or extended over your chest. For those unable to consume either wine or bread, communion is received fully in either element alone. Communion ANOINTING WITH OIL will be available at the back of the church during the distribution of communion. Those desiring to be anointed with oil as a sign of God s healing presence may walk to the back of the church before or after communing. [9]

Lamb of God ~ be seated ~ Anthem He shall feed his flock G. F. Händel (1685-1759) Silence Prayer He shall feed his flock like a shepherd, and he shall gather the lambs with his arm and carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young. (Isaiah 40:11) Come unto him, all ye that labor and are heavy laden and he will give you rest. Take his yoke upon you and learn of him, for he is meek and lowly of heart and ye shall find rest unto your souls. (Matthew 11:28-29) ~ please stand ~ [10]

Church Office Closed Josh will be on vacation out of the office from Jan. 17 25. Attend Jewish Shabbat Service and Adult Forum on Judaism Interested in experiencing a Jewish worship service? Join others from Holy Trinity as we attend a Friday night service with the Mishkan community at 6:30 p.m. on January 24 at Anshe Emet Synagogue, (3751 N. Broadway). Rabbi Lizzi Heydemann founded Mishkan in 2011, and it is emerging as a popular alternative to mainstream, long-established congregations in Chicago. The service is dynamic and filled with young adults, and is attracting lots of attention in the wider Jewish community. Come see what all of the excitement is about. Check out their website at mishkanchicago.org. For more information or to sign up, please contact Katie Mineck (clc@htchicago.org) or Carol LaHurd (cslahurd@comcast.net). At the Sunday Forum on February 2 join us for a presentation on the structure and history of the Sabbath evening service and to share impressions and observations from the synagogue visit nine days earlier. Led by Carol LaHurd. Holy Trinity Orientation Saturday, January 25 + 9:30 a.m. If you are interested in learning more about our church, including membership, join us. More info on page14. Coffee Hosts Needed A new year is almost upon us, and we are in need of Coffee Hour hosts! Please check the clipboard at the back of the church (or on the coffee hour table), and sign up to bring snacks for our after church coffee time. It s easy! All you need to do is this: 1. Bring snacks (homemade or store-bought) such as cookies, cake, muffins, crackers, fruit, veggies, really anything that can be eaten easily by hand! 2. Set them out (along with the coffee and other items) following worship. 3. Clean up after people leave and/or snacks are gone. Subscribe to or Support The Lutheran For a number of years Holy Trinity has provided member subscriptions to The Lutheran magazine. One of our members, Julie Sevig, is an associate editor. Each month, this print and online publication nurtures awareness of God's presence in our lives, connects ELCA members with each other and the global Christian community, and provides an open forum for lively discussion. If you already are receiving The Lutheran, we invite you to make a special gift. $10 supports one subscription; $100 would support ten. If you do not read the magazine you receive and would like to discontinue and save the paper and mailing costs, let Josh in the church office know this. If you are a newer member or are currently not receiving the magazine and would like to, contact Josh in the church office and he will add you to the subscription list. [13]
