ARCHDIOCESE OF DETROIT www.aod.org BOOK & GIFT SHOP Open weekends before & after Masses 17TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FROM THE PASTOR S DESK By Fr. Terry Kerner If you didn t take advantage of those lazy days of summer in July, it s too bad! August begins in a couple of days and that usually means things get a little busier around a parish. Thanks to your generosity to the 2017 CSA we will be able to install a generator for the parish offices and rectory this week. In addition, two new light posts and fixtures will replace the very, very old ones in front of the parish office. Your generosity to the 2018 CSA, the drive which we just completed, allows us to re-seal and stripe our parking lots. The work will be done on Thursday, August 9th. This practice should be done every five years or so. With a shiny new lot to match the new look on Rotunda Drive we ll be looking pretty spiffy. I also want to take the time to again thank all the volunteers who step forward every day to keep the inside and outside of our parish plant looking so good. You should know that your efforts and talents are not lost on the new parishioners and visitors each week. Thank you. Speaking of visitors, we will be welcoming next weekend Fr. Kevin Scalf, C.P.P.S. of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood. Father s visit is part of the annual Propagation of the Faith appeal and mission awareness effort. Fr. Kevin will be staying at the rectory for the weekend and speaking at all the masses. Please welcome him with your usual warm hospitality. If all this activity is not enough we have the Primary Election coming up on Tuesday, August 7th. Our St. Francis Room (parish hall) is the site of two precincts we accommodate for all elections. May of our folks vote here at the parish. No matter where you cast your vote, make sure you take the time to do so. All elections are important and have consequences. I would like to see us develop a Hospitality Committee of parishioners who would like to help with parish socials, dinners and any get-togethers we might be contemplating. There are events that are celebrated throughout the year that folks like to participate in by helping make them happen. If you would like to help, drop a note in the mail, offertory, or give me a call at the rectory. This can be a great way for both new and long-time parishioners to get to know one another. Give it some thought. After Labor Day we will be resuming our adult education programs with two deacons holding separate classes on most Mondays and Thursdays. Deacon Tom will be offering a series on the history and theology of the Mass. The Thursday night class on Scripture, which under certain conditions can offer a degree from Sacred Heart Seminary, and the Monday program are open to all parishioners. Look in the bulletin in the weeks ahead for more information. Have a good and busy week!
Page 2 MISSIONARY SUNDAY Fr. Kevin Scalf, C.P.P.S., will be with us next weekend to ask your support for the work of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood. Each year we are given the opportunity to hear about the missionary work of the church and to support that work through our financial gifts and our prayers. The Missionaries of the Precious Blood are based in Dayton, Ohio, but they also serve the Church in Guatemala, Chile, Peru, and Colombia. Next weekend we will take up a special collection at all the Masses and if you want to prepare a check to bring along, the check should be written out to St. Kateri Tekakwitha Church and marked for the missions. Please welcome Fr. Kevin with warm hospitality and respond to his message with generosity. The Missionaries of the Precious Blood believe that the redeeming power of the Blood of Christ can save the world. Because Christ shed his Blood for all, the Missionaries preach of Christ s all-inclusive love, especially for those whom society may view as too poor or lowly to be of any value. Their ministry, then, often calls them to the fringes of society, such as in their missions in Chile, Colombia, Peru, and Guatemala, where they serve parishes in sprawling urban centers, in villages high in the mountains and among country people who may otherwise seldom see a priest. In those countries, they have worked with the people to establish schools, clinics, and many parish ministries. They are ministers of the Word who have seen the Word work great miracles among the lives of the people to whom they minister and in themselves. PARISH NEWS WE NEED YOUR HELP! Altar Servers are truly needed for all masses. Young and old alike are welcome to participate in service to the Lord. Eucharistic ministers are especially needed for the 11 AM Mass on Sundays. Please call the parish office at 336-3227 if you find it in your heart to be active in this manner. JPII GIFT AND BOOK SHOP NEWS The Gift and Book Shop is open before and after weekend Masses during the summer months. If you have visitors during the summer, please invite them to visit us. It has been a popular spot for out-of-towners lately. Let us know if you have special requests. We will do our best to find and fill your orders. Thanks for the ongoing support! THE FRENCH CANADIAN AUTUMN TRIP (September 23-29) is very close to being Sold Out, so if you are interested in this trip, please contact the parish office or Pat Ayland at 313.441.3355 to check availability. An enhanced driver s license, passport or passport card is required. OVERSEAS MISSION OPPORTUNITIES FOR LAY PEOPLE Curious? If you have not done so, please take a few minutes to do so as soon as possible. Our program will begin on Saturday, September 8th at the 4 PM Mass. All students, parents, grandparents, teachers, classroom aides, and friends are requested to be present at the Mass and the program to follow in the parish hall. This includes parents and students interested in the 4 year old to Kindergarten program that takes place during the Mass. The 4 year old to Kindergarten program will begin on Saturday, September 15th. New faces and ideas are always welcome to join the program as a participant, catechist or classroom aide. Registration forms are available on the parish website, in the parish office or by request. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at your earliest convenience. RCIA (Rite of Catholic Initiation of Adults) Have you ever wondered what the Catholic faith was all about or why do what we do or just who are these saints that we pray to for help? In conjunction with our neighboring parishes of Sacred Heart, St. Sebastian, and St. Albert the Great, a once a week program can help you to discern if you wish to join the Catholic Church. Our program is open to those of no religious affiliation but have a curiosity of the Catholic faith and those who have been baptized in another Christian faith but feel drawn to the Catholic faith. Our Wednesday evening classes begin September 19th and run through May, 2019, and consist of prayer, sharing, community and reflection for the development of a faith and spiritual formation. Throughout the process, there is no set length of time for you to make your decision to become a Catholic nor is there any pressure. This decision is left up to the individual and must come from the depths of one s own heart and soul. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the program, please contact me at your earliest convenience. Fill the Bus! Then you order an entrée with a salad. When all of that has been consumed, you order a dessert. You ordered what you wanted and not what you needed. In our daily lives, we find ourselves wanting many things. We desire outcomes and good fortunes that we think will make all the difference. However, oftentimes when we receive these things, we only find ourselves wanting more. God always provides what we need. It may not be what we want. Our eyes can deceive us into believing that what we receive is not enough to fulfill us. If we trust in God and seek to only live with what sustains us rather than dive into excess, we will find that we are happier, healthier, and at peace. No one should ever make himself or herself feel overcome by too much of anything. God knows what we need even if we cannot see it for ourselves. -Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS
