BEING GOOD Who stops being better stops being good. Oliver Cromwell VOCATIONS CORNER There are several stages involved in the process of becoming a religious Priest, brother or sister. Each Community has its own rules, but generally, it involves four stages. The first stage involves the time period when a prospective candidate become acquainted with the Community and the Community with the candidate. This may occur as early as high school or college years. The vocation director is usually the point of contact between the individual and the Community. The candidate may spend short period of time living with the Community in order to become exposed to the life of the Community, life of the members. This week you are asked to pray especially for the Priests of your parish. Do not be afraid to ask the Lord to bless our parish with generous vocations. Also ask yourselves: Is God calling you? Do not be afraid to respond with generosity to God s call. CONGRATULATIONS! John s disciples were immersed in their own lives when his imprisonment was visited upon them. They didn t have the luxury of hindsight, and they were visibly shaken by John s imprisonment and certain fate. They came to Jesus to ask John s question and their own, Are you the one? As evidence of his identity, Jesus recites the signs of God s favor. The words he uses echo those of Isaiah. These are the very words from the first reading, and they are fresh in our minds. Jesus does not give us abstractions or high-sounding ideas. He does not speak of a God who reigns in highest heaven. He speaks of a God who acts on our behalf. John s disciples can see that God s power plays itself out in compassion. We are invited to see this, too. Not only that, we are invited to be the instrument of God s compassion, just as Jesus was. GOD S WORK Jesus also takes time to sing the praises of John, this principled man who does not change with the wind. Jesus reiterates that there is no greater person born of woman than John the Baptist. His was the privilege of heralding the coming of the Savior. But greater than this, Jesus pointedly adds, is John s participation in the reign of God. Our role is not to announce the coming of the Lord, but to receive the Lord whom John heralded. If the earth is to bud forth a Savior in our time, it will have to be through our healing mission that is his work. For John, this work cost him his life. We have the vocation of continuing this costly work. Especially during this season, we are asked to recall our commitment to healing, reconciliation, and peacemaking. This is a rejoicing Sunday because we can see and taste Christmas. This is a season of joyful anticipation as we consciously look for ways to be active, effective members of the reign of God. Today s Readings: Isaiah 35:1 6a, 10; Psalm 146:6 10; James 5:7 10; Matthew 11:2 11 ANGELA S INTERVIEW One of our parishioners has a great story to tell that was broadcast on KGO Radio on Saturday, December 8, 2007 about her personal visit to the Sudan. She's very unassuming, but she's an amazing woman with an amazing story. If you have the time (about an hour) have a listen to the KGO Radio broadcast of her interview. You'll be amazed at her experience. It's a live replay of the broadcast. Go to the following link: http://kgoam810.com Article.asp?PT=Archive&id=49920 Select: Saturday- Select: 9:00 p.m. Select your preferred media player. Sit back and listen. It's an hour program with LOTS of commercials. But it's worth the time. We are so blessed to have Angela in our parish.

December 11 School Bulletin Dear Holy Name Parent, It is definitely the season for celebrating our many blessings. St. Nicholas came to visit the students on Thursday, December 6, which was his feast day. A large shoe was left outside the classroom while we were all at Mass and when we returned the shoe had a small candy cane for each student from our good old St. Nick. HOLY NAME SCHOOL BORDERS GIFT WRAP Please support our school by visiting the Holy Name tables at Borders Stonestown this weekend, Dec. 15th and 16th from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm. as our 8th graders and their parents participate in the Borders' Gift-Wrapping Program. Visit our tables and have your Borders' purchases wrapped by our students and parents. Your generous "tips" will help with the 8th grade end-of-the year activities. Tell your friends and family members! This Thursday Night: I m really looking forward to seeing you all at the Christmas Concert. The students will be performing with a 24 piece orchestra, thanks to our gifted and generous Mr. Eiras. How fortunate our students are, I can hardly wait. 3 Cheers for Mr. Sergio Herrera (Omar, 4A) and his helpers who painted. the Assembly Room (our soon to be library) this Saturday. A huge thanks goes to the Holy Name Men s Club, especially to Kris Giron (Faith, 3B & Hope 1st), Dennis Gleavy (Emma, 3rd & Sean, K), and Robert Bowen (Sam, 3rd and Anzsia, K) who gave many hours. Thanks also to the others who were in and out between coaching duties. Next painting days: We will be working on the hall in front of Kindergarten and up the stairs to connect with the painting done this Summer in the main hall. Vince de Lucca will be coordinating this effort. The work will take place between Wednesday, January 2 and Sunday, January 6. I know our tireless and beyond generous professional painters, Sergio Herrera & Fred Grafelman, will also help as they are able. Remember, many hands make light work. If you can help for a few hours, for a day, or for a few days, please give Vince a call at 810-7788. He will be happy to hear from joyful, willing volunteers. Dreaming: What do you think of the idea of a Library, Multi-Media Center? This may be the perfect time in Holy Name s history to look at this possibility. Much conversation, planning, grant writing etc. would have to take place but it would be a wonderful conversation to have. That will be one of the main topics at the January 10 Parent Guild meeting. Be sure to mark your calendars now. We want to hear from anyone with ideas, experience or dreams. We will be forming a working committee, so be sure to be there and give us your input. Blessings, Ann Meyers Manchester, Ed.D KINDERGARTEN APPLICATIONS Applications are now available for Kindergarten 2008-2009. If your child is ready for Kindergarten in 2008, please call the office for an application. We want to give priority to siblings. Don t delay. We have a number of applications already on file. 2007 Christmas Schedule CHRISTMAS EVE MASSES Monday, December 24 5:00 PM (Family {Children s}mass) 7:00 PM (Vietnamese Mass) 11:30 PM Christmas Carols Holy Name Choral Ministry 12:00 MIDNIGHT Pontifical High Mass Most Reverend Ignatius C.
