OFFICE HOURS Monday-Thursday 8:00 am - 4:00 pm Closed for lunch 12:00-1:00 pm; Friday 8:00 am-12 Noon pm DIVINE WISDOM The Lord's message, through Moses, was to "take no revenge and cherish no grudge... love your neighbor as yourself" (Leviticus 19:18). We might think, "Great in theory, but not always realistic!" Then Jesus in today's Gospel goes even further. Take a slap in the face and then turn the other cheek? Treat enemies the same as friends? Again, we're tempted to think that those are nice ideals, but not very practical in the "real world." Paul echoes Jesus when he tells the Corinthians that what passes for human wisdom is absurdity to God. Divine wisdom casts sunshine on the good and the bad, showers rain on the honest and the dishonest--without distinction. We must examine our wisdom and common sense to see how they compare to the wisdom of God, and make adjustments accordingly. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

The Rite will usually be conducted on the second weekend of each month: Next blessing will be on March 11/12.

Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time - February 19, 2017 First of all, thanks to so many of you who have extended to me Get Well wishes and prayers by cards, emails, texts and phone messages! These were truly heart warming and I appreciate your concern. I am healing very fast; the last time when I broke my right hip (ice skating at Rockefeller Center in New York City), I also healed quickly. My doctor said You have the bones of a twenty-year old... (I do drink about a quart of milk a day great source for calcium!) and the doctor continued and the brains of a ten-year-old! So have I learned a lesson? yes: people my age should NOT be climbing ladders! Already I have had a half-dozen offers to help me put up and take down Christmas decorations for Christmas 2017. Thanks! Of course, the GOOD NEWS that also happened that same week (January 29 February 4) was that we reached our goal the goal set by the diocese (after a loan approval) of how much more money we needed to receive (in gifts or pledges) in order to move forward on going out to bid, scheduling a groundbreaking and the beginning of construction. Let me comment on some VERY IMPORTANT issues: 1. Just because we have reached goal does NOT mean that we don t need more pledges. We will continue to seek pledges from those who have not yet made a pledge and from those who join the parish. By continuing to receive more monetary gifts and pledges, we will be able to borrow a lesser amount (than the $4.5 million approved) and to make up for those who had to discontinue their pledges for whatever reason. 2. I urge you to honor your pledge! Do NOT think that because we have reached goal, we no longer need your money; the loan approval and the eventual green light to go forward are based entirely on YOUR pledges and the strength of the repayments made by you. 3. Of course, since the time of construction (12 14 months) is shorter than the term of some pledges (2 4 years out), we need as much CASH as early as possible. The diocese has NOT approved a bridge loan to cover the gap between payments needed and pledged money yet to come in. So, I ask: can you try to double or triple up your payments and/or pay it off much sooner than scheduled? This would be a tremendous boon to us as we will then have the money needed when needed and not have to negotiate a second bridge loan. Plus, it will benefit your budget once you have paid off your pledge sooner than scheduled. 4. If you have already made a pledge and paid it off in full: THANK YOU! Because of your generosity, we are at this point of moving forward with construction! Of course, if you want to continue your payments beyond the original amount pledged, that would be most welcome! Thanks to all! This is an exciting time for Holy Spirit! Page 4 Mark Your Calendar Now for the Lenten Retreat! Retrouvaille is a Catholic based program designed to help couples rediscover their love for each other. If you or someone you know is considering separation or divorce please urge them to sign up for Retrouvaille. This program helps couples with communication issues, addiction challenges, infidelity or parenting problems. The couples learn new techniques in communication and resolving conflicts. Our next weekend is March 24-26, 2017. Space is limited please contact Chuck Moore 702-604-1006 to reserve your space. If you have any questions about Retrouvaille, please feel free to call Chuck Moore at 702-604-1006, or our chaplain, Fr. Ron Zanoni, at 702-629-4438. GUARDIAN ANGEL CATHEDRAL UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY FOR LITURGICAL MINISTERS In an effort to promote a sense of community and belonging among all Catholic Churches in the Diocese of Las Vegas, we would like to extend an invitation to Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Lectors, Ushers, and adult Altar Servers, to serve at the Cathedral on one weekend, at one Mass each month. Ministering at the Cathedral is an opportunity to experience the Universal Church, considering ninety-five percent of those attending Mass are visitors from around the world. It is also an opportunity to become better acquainted with your Cathedral. The Guardian Angel Cathedral is the Bishop s church. It s where he ordains new priests and deacons, administers the Sacraments, celebrates the Sacred Triduum and Holy Days throughout the Liturgical Year. Other liturgies celebrated at the Cathedral are the Mass of Sending Forth for Seminarians, the White Mass for Catholic Physicians, the Red Mass for Catholic Attorneys, and various Masses for active ministries within the diocese. Please prayerfully consider taking advantage of this opportunity to serve the Church and the People of God. For more information please contact Joseph von Hazmburg at the Guardian Angel Cathedral office at (702)735-5241 or adminassist@gaclv.org. NEW BEGINNINGS A Ministry of Hope, Healing and Consolation New Beginnings is a Bereavement Ministry designed to provide support to Christian individuals who have experienced traumatic loss in their lives. The grieving process can cause a sense of feeling disconnected, dismayed and can fill the individual with a sense of hopelessness and despair. New Beginnings offers several services that will gently accompany the bereaved and the parish community in their adjustment to the fact of death and to the sorrow this entails. HOPE Catholic Funeral Mass Planning and Coordination Our faith reminds us of the sure and certain hope that our loved one who died in Christ will rise with him on the last day. A compassionate and non-judgmental funeral coordinator will guide you in planning a beautiful funeral liturgy for your deceased loved one. You will be assisted in choosing Scripture readings and hymns that express our Christian hope in Christ s saving death and resurrection. Contact: Patti Fitzpatrick 702-459-7778 HEALING Grief Facilitation - Blessed are they who mourn; they shall be consoled (Matthew 5:3) This support group offers trained individuals to help the bereaved understand the process of grief. In these classes, individuals examine their feelings during this intense period and look at coping mechanisms to move through the process feeling guided and not alone. The service has structured classes on various topics and also offers sessions for participants to examine their experiences and share with others in a safe environment led by a facilitator. Contact: Susie Cram 702-459-7778 CONSOLATION Helping the Bereaved - If one member suffers in the body of Christ which is the Church, all the members suffer with that member (1 Cor. 12:26) When a member of Christ s Body dies, the faithful are called to a ministry of consolation to those who have suffered the loss of one whom they love. This is an in-service offered to help individuals who are close to, work with, or know someone who has suffered a loss, but who are not sure how to help the bereaved. The instructor will teach the participants the stages of grief, describe normal grief behavior and share ways to journey with the individual they want to help or support.
