Great crowds came to him, having with them the lame, the blind, the deformed, the mute, and many others. They placed them at his feet, and he cured them. Matt 15:30 Dear Parishioners, You may have seen me placing my hands on people after Mass or at some other time to pray for them. If possible, when I see someone with a cast on their arm or a boot on their foot or a patch on their eye and if they are open to it, I try to place my hands on and pray for them on the spot. Why? Because Jesus came to heal and he wants us as His Church to continue His healing works. Have you ever prayed with someone for healing? Have you ever laid hands on someone asking God s healing for them? Have you ever felt inspired to do this? Two of the 7 Sacraments of the Church are particularly means of healing healing of body, mind and spirit--for us. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church: The Lord Jesus Christ, physician of our souls and bodies, who forgave the sins of the paralytic and restored him to bodily health, has willed that his Church continue, in the power of the Holy Spirit, his work of healing and salvation, even among her own members. This is the purpose of the two sacraments of healing: the sacrament of Penance and the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. 1421 This weekend at all Masses we encounter Jesus as healer in the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. Parishioners with serious illnesses that could lead to death and parishioners who have reached 65 years old can receive the Sacrament of Anointing if they choose. As members of the Body of Christ, I encourage all of us to pray for one another as the anointing occurs. Next weekend Fr. Jonathan Kelly a Spiritual Director at St. John Vianney Seminary in St. Paul will celebrate all four Masses and share with us about the other sacrament of healing, the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. In addition to our regularly scheduled weekly times for this sacrament, we will also have an Evening of Reconciliation for both parishes on November 15 th 5:30-8pm at St. Bernard. Church of the Ascension Norwood Young America, MN THE SACRAMENT OF ANOINTING will be given at all Masses at both Ascension and St. Bernard s this weekend October 21 and 22. The homily will be brief to accommodate the anointing. People who are experiencing an illness that can be life-threatening or who are age 65 or over are encouraged to come. Please sit at the ends of the pew, and Fr. Gregory will come to you for the anointing. There will also be treats and refreshments after the Masses. Extra Reconciliation Time Available Oct. 22 nd before Mass. For those planning on being anointed at any of the Masses on October 21 st and 22 nd, you are encouraged to come to the Sacrament of Reconciliation beforehand. Therefore, in addition to the regularly scheduled reconciliation times on Saturdays before Mass, the Sacrament of Reconciliation will also be offered on Sunday, October 22 nd, a half hour before Mass begins. Please note these changes when Fr. Gregory is away at an upcoming retreat: At Ascension: There will be NO 7:15 a.m. Mass on Friday, October 27 th. Although there will be a 6:15 p.m. Mass on Tuesday, October 24 th, there will not be Adoration or the Sacrament of Reconciliation beforehand.
