(Closed Sundays) HE EMBRACED THEM AND BLESSED THEM Today Jesus stresses how children embody the reign of God. They are trusting and loving and have hearts that are open to love. They are joyful when they are made aware of God s love for them, and are eager to return that love. This is the model Jesus holds out to us if we want to welcome the reign of God. We need to have open, loving hearts. We must drop our defenses, however we came by them, and welcome Christ s love for us with joy. This is impossible for us on our own. Only the grace of God will enable us to do this, but that grace is freely and generously given. We have only to accept it. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

First 27th Sunday in of Ordinary Advent - December Time October 3, 2017, 2018 Cheers! Many people often ask why I say Cheers! so often. Well, here s the background. When I was studying in Europe (Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK) in the school year of 1970-71, I was attending the Corpus Christi Institute (a catechetical formation program) in London. The Corpus Christi Institute did not offer student housing; so I was referred to a bulletin board which listed places for students to live in while attending college. One notice jumped out at me; it read something like this: Students needed to work in a pub; students will receive room and board, plus 20 pounds a week. I applied and was accepted as a resident in a pub in White City (a section of London). What a great experience that was! I went to school only in the morning, attended matinee performances of plays and musicals in the West End (theatre district of London) and tended bar in the evenings at the pub, which was part of the Watneys Ale family of pubs. The married couple, Breda and Phil O Connell (from Ireland), who ran the pub were called publicans and there were six young men who lived and worked at the pub, including another classmate of mine from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D. C. and myself. At that time White City was an Irish neighborhood in London and the heart of the social life was the nearby Dog Track (betting on greyhound races) and our pub. Everyone always said Cheers! as both a greeting and a toast -- of course, while raising a pint o Guinness! (By the way, I also mastered how to pour a proper pint of Guinness: it is a learned art!) So, I ve been saying Cheers! since late 1970! I ve used it in several other ways since. At Christ the King, my weekly column was called Cheers! And, you may have seen that my personalized Nevada license plate is CHEEERS. Notice that there are three E s in my spelling of CHEEERS; that s because someone else in Nevada had beaten me to the correct spelling of CHEERS for a license plate. Another story: my car used to be a black Mustang convertible with the license plate of CHEEERS; well, one day the guy behind me is honking at me and I see in the rear view mirror that he has a black Mustang convertible. I thought that he was just inviting me to join the Black Mustang Convertible club, but when he pulled up in front of me, his license plate read CHEERS. What a coincidence: two identical black Mustang convertibles with license plates of CHEERS & CHEEERS! And one more story: one year my every-other-year trip to Europe was to England and Ireland. When in London, we went to the pub in White City where I used to work. We were a group of 40 and, of course, kind of overwhelmed the bartenders. When I told them I used to work there, they asked me to get behind the bar and help them wait on our group. So, there I was, Father Bill pouring proper pints of Guinness to the patrons (including us Yanks ). It was great fun! Page 4 So, CHEERS! Have you been wondering what ministry you could participate in at Holy Spirit? We have a Social Committee that plans different functions for the Church. We hold meetings once a month or every other month. If you re interested in joining to be a part of the fun, please reach out to Kristal Urso k.castillourso@icloud.com Our next meeting will be September and we will go over our events already planned. Hope to see you in our group! Upcoming Social Events: Adults Only Cocktail Night date still to be decided Christmas Ornament Painting 12/1 Retrouvaille Community will holding their Weekend October 12-14th - Space is Limited Retrouvaille offers Hope to those who are struggling in their marriage!! Matrimony: A calling to forgive! Mercy is the force that reawakens us to new life and instills in us the courage to look to the future with hope. Retrouvaille offers a welcoming and loving space to couples who have been living with the misery of a failing marriage. Retrouvaille offers hope: hope that it is not too late, hope of a different and better marriage. Retrouvaille helps couples to show each other mercy through the opportunities it provides to listen, to forgive, to be reconciled and to move into their futures believing that God loves them and with His help and their efforts, their marriages can be healed and restored. First 27th Sunday in of Ordinary Advent - December Time October 3, 2017, 2018 Before I departed for Jamaica, I went to Best Buy and bought a pocket fitting point and shoot camera. In all honesty, I was intimidated of the thought of bringing this camera that I saved my expenses up for to a foreign place I've never been to. I had little idea of what to expect out of Jamaica and that's the reason why I wanted to bring it but at the same time it was the same reason why I was hesitant to. Flash forward to the end of the trip and I'm so happy that I did. Taking that camera to all the adventures we went to was a great way to document the trip. On the plane ride home, I was able to collect all of the video footage and compile them to one big recap. I made it look pretty, slapped some music to it, uploaded it to YouTube, and bam! The final product turned out to be something I'm very proud of and now I'm able to show my friends and family our mission trip from my perspective. All of the lessons I learned, things I saw, people I met, and obstacles I overcame will be able to truly stick with me for the rest of my life. I have this documentary that I can always go back to whenever I feel like I need a reminder of everything this fantastic and inspiring mission trip did for me. I also have attached my picture which is of me and Daniel (shoutout to Tiara's nail polishing job). Sincerely, Brandon Beltram How does our church stay looking new and beautiful? New Beginnings is a Bereavement Ministry designed to provide support to Christian individuals who have experienced traumatic loss in their lives. The grieving process can cause a sense of feeling disconnected, dismayed and can fill the individual with a sense of hopelessness and despair. New Beginnings offers several services that will gently accompany the bereaved and the parish community in their adjustment to the fact of loss and to the sorrow this entails.
