Your generosity is always appreciated by our school children. IMMACULATE CONCEPTION December 8 is holy day of obligation Masses will be at 7:30 AM & 9AM and at 5 PM at the Church. ADVENT Advent has a twofold character: as a season to prepare for Christmas when Christ s first coming to us is remembered; as a season when that remembrance directs the mind and heart to await Christ s Second Coming at the end of time. Advent is thus a period for devout and joyful expectation. Dear Fr. D Angelo, We want to express our sincere gratitude to you for allowing us to come to your church on 11/18/07 to sell hand made olive wood religious articles and souvenirs. We appreciate your help. It meant a lot to us for the chance given to come to your Church, especially announcing in the bulletin and during announcements at Masses to the parishioners to let them know about our mission. It is highly appreciated by the Christian community in Bethlehem, since all the proceeds will help them survive and encourage them to stay in the holy land. All these olive wood handicrafts are handmade by the Christian families and the sales of these items are the only source of income for them. Due to the difficulty of their situation, they have no ability to sell these items locally. God bless you and your parishioners for helping us in our mission. Sincerely yours in Christ, Shadi Abusada PEACEFUL AND STILL Several years ago I had the opportunity to spend a night at the Timberline Lodge on the slopes of Oregon s Mount Hood. Peering out the window of my room in the early morning, I saw the snow-covered slope of the top of the mountain appear as the sun began to rise. I quickly got out of bed, got dressed, and walked through the lodge to the front door. Opening the door, I was stunned by the fact that the cloud line was only a few feet below me. Only the lodge and the top of the mountain itself were above the clouds. As I climbed up the face of the mountain, the sun began to rise, piercing the clouds with shafts of pink, orange, and yellow light. When I climbed higher and higher, the snow-capped peaks of the surrounding mountains began to pierce the clouds. All was still and peaceful, like the world proclaimed in today s passage from Isaiah. THE MOUNTAIN OF PEACE Isaiah describes the mountain of the Lord s house as a place where we receive instruction from God. In prophetic exhortation we are reminded that we are to beat our swords into plowshares and our spears into pruning hooks. We are not to raise a sword against another nation or train for war again. We can choose to throw our hands in the air and give up hoping that this could ever become a reality. Or we can choose to heed the call of Saint Paul, issued in today s second reading: Let us throw off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light (Romans 13:12). Preparing ourselves for the coming of the Lord means much more than putting our own spiritual house in order. It means that in our everyday life we dedicate ourselves to being peacemakers: at home, at work, and in our relationships. The stunning prophecies we hear during this holy season remind us that, like a peaceful mountaintop high above the clouds, our world can become a place of peace, tranquility, and light. Could you imagine to be called to spread the Gospel? We are men and women who have freely chosen to live a life of love in faith and trust as disciples of Jesus. We call one another to a contemplative stance and direct ministry in the Church with an option for the poor. Called to love and to give in service, we show our love through celibate life that enables us to give with generosity and in a selfless way as Jesus did. What are you doing with God s love? What is your response to your inner call? The doors are opened even for you! Listen attentively! Read: Luke: 5, 1-11 FOOD FOR THE POOR On December 8 & 9, Fr. Gland from Food for the Poor will be at Holy Name to make an appeal. Please give him a warm Holy Name welcome. Since its founding in 1982, Food For The Poor (FFP), a Christian international aid organization, distributed more than $3.0 billion in food, medical, educational, building and small business supplies to 16 countries in the Caribbean and Central America. The organization maintains an average administrative overhead of 4 percent ensuring the poor receive 96 percent of all donations. Food For The Poor follows the principle that education and self-help must fortify charity work so recipients learn to break the cycle of poverty. FFP supports programs to teach recipients how to raise livestock, develop small businesses and provides agricultural assistance to independent farmers. CANOSSIAN CORNER St. Magdalene of Canossa had a great love for the Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows. She considered her as the real foundress of the Canossian Institute, and saw in her the greatest and most perfect model of Christian life. Mary at the foot of the cross received us all as her children. Magdalene said that she would not recognize the Sisters in her institute as Daughters of Charity if they did not have a great love for Mary as she did. JUSTICE AND OBEDIENCE Justice is the insurance we have on our lives, and obedience is the premium we pay for it. William Penn, English Quaker

We here at Holy Name have much to be thankful for, first and foremost, our wonderful children. Speaking of thanks, I want to thank you for your outstanding generosity with the One Warm Coat program. We reached our first goal of 100 coats in just the first two days. Mr. Galvin will put out a new bigger goal to the students this afternoon. Again, thank you, I know the coats will be gratefully received by those in need. Yesterday our 7 th graders got a great send off as they left on the bus for their week at Caritas. The whole school lined up on 40 th Avenue, in front of school and on Lawton by the gym to wave goodbye. There was much cheering and shouts of good wishes as the bus took off and pulled around the corner heading north. They seem to be enjoying perfect weather so far and I have no doubt they are having a wonderful time. Blessings, Ann Meyers Manchester, Ed.D.
