Liturgy at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church February 25, 2018 + 9am & 11am Liturgy at Second Sunday in Lent Holy Trinity OUR LITURGY DURING LENT Kneeling: Lent is a time for penitence and reflection. The posture of kneeling during Lent suggests repentance and dependence on God. You are welcome to use the pew kneelers before the liturgy or after receiving communion. In the Loop Environment: During Lent our worship environment and liturgy are simplified, helping us to focus on essentials. Flowers are not used during Lent and the word alleluia is not spoken or sung until Easter. The bare branches in the worship space evoke the wilderness. As a fast for the eyes we have removed the icons from the worship space and replaced them with Stations of the Cross created by Holy Trinity member Richard Bough. The word Lent means spring and we await the turning of winter to spring as we prepare our hearts with joy for the annual paschal celebration of Jesus death and resurrection. The second covenant in this year s Lenten readings is the one made with Abraham and Sarah: God s promise to make them the ancestors of many, with whom God will remain in everlasting covenant. Paul says this promise comes to all who share Abraham s faith in the God who brings life into being where there was no life. We receive this baptismal promise of resurrection life in faith. Sarah and Abraham receive new names as a sign of the covenant, and we too get new identities in baptism, as we put on Christ.

Prelude 9am: Lord, Thee I Love With All My Heart Michael Costello 11am: Three Chorale Preludes on Wer nur den lieben Gott lässt walten Georg Böhm (1661-1733) Friedrich Marpurg (1718-1795) Helmut Walcha (1907-1991) Penitential Litany Help Us Create SACRED SPACE by powering down Please do not use cell phones and other electronic devices. Please stand as you are able. GATHERING The ringing of the meditation bowl calls us to silence, centering and reflection as we prepare for worship. 11am only: Call to Worship Lord, Thee I Love With All My Heart B. Schmid, 1577 Text may be found at Hymn 750. 11am only: Introduction and Installation of Congregation Council As the presiding minister begins you may make the sign of the cross in remembrance of your baptism. Following the invitation, please kneel as you are able. Refrain: [2]

Turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. Incense, used in Christian and Jewish worship since ancient times, is part of our multi-sensory liturgy. The assembly, gospel book, and table all signs of Christ's presence among us are honored with incense, representing the rising of our prayers and praise. For self-centered living and for failing to walk with humility and gentleness: For longing to have what is not ours, and for hearts that are not at rest with ourselves: Refrain For misuse of human relationships, and for unwillingness to see the image of God in others: For jealousies that divide families and nations, and for rivalries that create strife and warfare: Refrain For reluctance in sharing the gifts of God, and for carelessness with the fruits of creation: For hurtful words that condemn, and for angry deeds that harm: For idleness in witnessing to Jesus Christ, and for squandering the gifts of love and grace: Refrain Please face the font. The presiding minister announces God s forgiveness. #321 Eternal Lord of Love, Behold Your Church The presiding minister bows toward the assembly which is the body of Christ and the primary symbol of God s presence in the liturgy. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Let us pray Amen. ~ be seated ~ Gathering Hymn Greeting Prayer of the Day [3]

WORD First Reading Genesis 17:1-7, 15-16 The story of God s covenant with Abraham and Sarah is read this Sunday to strengthen the Lenten focus on covenant and to present examples of those who receive life from God. That the passage speaks of God s everlasting covenant with the descendants of Abraham reminds Christians of God s continuing faithfulness also to Jews and Muslims. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation Setting: Aaron David Miller Sung by the choir. Gospel Mark 8:31-38 As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. Stand, as you are able, to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. May I never boast of anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world is crucified to me, and I to the world. (Gal. 6:14) The gospel promises that following in the way of Christ offers life. During Lent, many Christians place limits on their lives fasting from self-indulgence (ELW, p. 254) as a sign of incorporation into Christ. We need to beware of counseling those who are suffering more than we are about willingly taking up their cross, by which Mark meant religious persecution. The holy gospel according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. ~ be seated ~ Sermon Silence Hymn of the Day Call to Renewal Following the sermon there is a time of silence for reflection and quiet meditation. Our liturgy is not only made up of words, gestures and music, but also moments of silence. ~please stand as you are able~ #808 Lord Jesus, You Shall Be My Song [4]

~ please kneel, as you are able ~ After each petition: Hear us, O God, your mercy is great. ~ please stand, as you are able ~ The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. ~ be seated ~ Prayers of Intercession Peace The assembly is invited to share God s peace with one another saying, Peace be with you, or similar words. MEAL If this is your first time, or if you have been attending awhile and would like to get to know us better, please fill out the welcome slip in the pew and place it in the offering plate. Today s loose offering is designated for the ONE Northside (see page 10 for more information). Checks and envelope offerings support Holy Trinity s overall ministry unless designated otherwise. #325 I Want Jesus to Walk with Me Offering Offertory Hymn ~ please stand as you are able ~ Great Thanksgiving The thanksgiving includes the following: Dialogue [5]

Preface It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. You call your people to cleanse their hearts and prepare with joy for the paschal feast, that, renewed in the gift of baptism, we may come to the fullness of your grace. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Holy, Holy Thanksgiving at the Table The spoken responses during the Thanksgiving at Table echo the presiding minister. [6]

The Lord s Prayer As a sign of openness to the divine presence, you may join the presider in praying the Our Father with the ancient gesture of extended hands. Lamb of God Please remain standing. ~ please be seated ~ [7]

Communion 9am Communion Anthem Lord, Thee I Love With All My Heart B. Schmid, 1577 Sung by the Holy Trinity Children s Choir. 11am Communion Anthem Turn Thy Face From My Sins Thomas Attwood (1765-1838) All are welcome at Christ's table, including children. Bread is received in the hands. Wine is received either by drinking from the (silver) common cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the second (glass) cup. Gluten-free wafers are available from the presiding minister. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing, keeping your hands folded over your chest. For those unable to consume either wine or bread, communion is received fully in either element alone. Text may be found at Hymn 750. Turn thy face from my sins and put out all my misdeeds. Make me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence, and take not thy Holy Spirit from me. (Text: Psalm 51:9-11) Silence Prayer ~ please stand ~ 9am only: Introduction and Installation of Congregation Council Blessing [8]

SENDING Having heard the word and shared the eucharist, we are sent to live our baptism through words and deeds, making known the love of Christ, and working for justice and peace in our families, communities, and world. Turn to face the cross as it recesses, you may bow as it passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. #769 If You But Trust in God to Guide You Go in peace. Remember the poor. Thanks be to God! Following the liturgy, several things happen simultaneously: some folks greet one another and converse; others listen to the organ postlude; and others move to the rear of the nave for refreshments and social time. Sending Hymn Sending Postlude 9am: If You But Trust in God to Guide You J.S. Bach (1685-1750) 11am: Chaconne in g minor Louis Couperin (c. 1626-1661) A community organization with a history of nearly 60 years of powerful and effective community organizing. [12] LENT 2018 AT HOLY TRINITY Daily Lenten Devotional We invite you to use "Through the Night of Doubt and Sorrow" with its brief readings each day of Lent. It is available as a download in the weekly enews and special Lent email, and there are paper copies available at the back of the church. Lenten Book Recommendation Soul-Centered: Spirituality for People on the Go by Jim Clarke. Short, easy-to-read chapter with reflection questions and suggested spiritual practices. Limited copies are available at the back of the church for $14. See Beau Surratt if you would like to use a credit card, or pay for it online at our giving site. Midweek Eucharist + Wednesdays at 9:30am One common Lenten practice is being more intentional about prayer and other spiritual disciplines. Prayer is a discipline that can be expressed in many ways. Perhaps this Lent, if you are free on Wednesday mornings, you might consider attending our regular midweek Eucharist as an expression of your Lenten prayer practice. Holden Evening Prayer + Wednesday, March 7 + 7pm Lenten Contemplative Worship A quiet service of music and word featuring Marty Haugen s beloved Holden Evening Prayer Lenten Breadbaking Retreat + Saturday, March 10 + 10am-3pm Lent is a traditional time for fasting and reflection. In our busy lives of instant gratification the process of baking bread invites us to gain strength from engaging in a communal and prayerful process of mixing ingredients, kneading and waiting. The breadbaking retreat begins with tea and introductions and the fast is broken with a eucharist and a simple meal of vegetarian soup and fresh bread. You will go home with a fragrant, nutritious loaf of bread into which you have added your prayers and hopes. Please bring a mixing bowl and wooden spoon and an apron if you wish. Suggested donation: $15. Sign-up at the back of the church or e-mail the church office (office@htchicago.org).
