Psalm The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy (Psalm 126). Second Reading I am confident that the one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus (Philippians 1:4-6, 8-11). Gospel The winding roads shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth (Luke 3:1-6). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved. AWAITING THE SALVATION OF GOD The world does not seem big enough to contain the jubilation of the first reading. In the Gospel reading, the Roman empire isn t big enough, either. The great powers of Rome are named and made to stand waiting for the arrival of God s salvation. And we find Paul meditating joyfully on what really matters. According to Baruch, the city of Jerusalem is like a person standing on tiptoe looking for God s salvation, which is coming from the east. Those who were led away on foot, heads down, now come back, a proud people. Why, the very way is smoothed out. The path is lined with fragrant, lush trees. It can t get any better than this, can it? Well, yes, it can. For a voice calls out in the desert. Here is the beginning of the salvation of God. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. First Second Sunday of of Advent - - December 3, 2017 9, 2018 Cheers! Today, Sunday, December 9, is KATHY MC GEE DAY. Kathy s final day as Parish Secretary and my Administrative Assistant was on last Friday, December 7. Kathy has worked with me for 36 years! Here are some highlights of her career: I had known Kathy even before she began working at Christ the King as she and her husband, Bill, had attended a Marriage Encounter weekend at which I was the team priest. Thus, our friendship began in 1975. I remember telling her --before it became official -- that I was starting a new parish in 1978 which would be her new parish as her home was in Spring Valley. She and Bill McGee, were among the founding members of Christ the King. Kathy began first as a secretary at Christ the King on October 25, 1982 for the departments of Liturgy, Music, Religious Education and Youth Ministry. For a while, Kathy, served as the Director of Liturgical volunteers. Have you been wondering what ministry you could participate in at Holy Spirit? We have a Social Committee that plans different functions for the Church. We hold meetings once a month or every other month. If you re interested in joining to be a part of the fun, please reach out to Kristal Urso k.castillourso@icloud.com In 1984, I asked Kathy to be the Parish Secretary and my Administrative Assistant: a position she held until. October 15, 2007, when she took on the same position as Parish Secretary and Administrative Assistant at the brand new parish of Holy Spirit. So, that s 25 years at Christ the King and 11 years at Holy Spirit -- a total of 36 years, making her the longest serving employee in the Diocese of Las Vegas. Of course, Kathy has served not just me and the staffs of Christ the King and Holy Spirit, but also for literally thousands of families at both of those parishes. There are not enough words or even the correct words to express my gratitude to Kathy who, over the years, has become a best friend. So often, I would go to Kathy for advice and consultation about so many things that were going on in the parish, in the diocese and in my own personal life. Her insights and keenness of observation and just plain good common sense have been invaluable to me. Together, we have been there for each other in the good times and the difficult times of our two families. Come say thank you to Kathy after the 12:30 p.m. Mass today -- December 9. It s not good-bye as Kathy will stay in the parish and most likely get involved in some volunteer work. Page 4
