Dec. 4 Family Science Day So Why is School closed on Monday and Tuesday? A king invited his children to a feast for a certain number of days. When the 9me came for them to depart, he said: My children, I ask you to stay with me one day longer. It is difficult for me to say goodbye. So it is with G- d. The long Sukkot fes9val has ended, but G- d wants to keep the children of Israel a ligle longer and enjoy them, so an eighth day, Sh mini Atzeret, has been added. It s as good a story as any, told by Rashi, the famous Jewish commentator, to Sippur Sunday help explain the reason why Monday is considered an eighth day of holiday Hot Lunch Orders Due celebra=ons. It is considered to be independent of the seven- day Sukkot Concert Band feast, yet its name literally means the Eighth Day of Assembly. The Bible Parent Speaker Series lists it as a separate celebra=on, a solemn gathering and a holy day when work is forbidden. The major dis=nc=on of Sh mini Atzeret in the synagogue is that its liturgy includes a direct prayer for rain that is added to the Amida prayer un=l Passover. The words: Who causes the winds to blow and the rains to come down = Mashiv Ha ruach U morid Ha gashem, referring to G- d, are inserted in the middle of the prayer. Actually, there is something quite wonderful about the fact that wherever Jews live, they recite prayers for rain now, whether or not the countries they live in need rain at this =me. The liturgy links us to one another, and to the land of Israel, where the rainy season will soon start. Simchat Torah (=Rejoicing in the Torah), will be celebrated at every synagogue star=ng Monday night and all day Tuesday, mostly with noise, laughter, dancing and singing. On Simchat Torah, the cycle celebrated is the reading in the synagogue of the Torah, which ends with the death of Moses in the last verses of Deuteronomy, then begins immediately with the Crea=on of the world in the first verses of Genesis. All the noise, laughter, dancing and singing are about that ending and beginning. Praying for much needed rain, and celebra=ng the cycle of a new beginning of learning and apprecia=ng our roots, tradi=ons and beliefs, we believe are both worthy of us pausing from our daily rou=nes and honoring. May these days bring joy, family quality =me and rain, rain, rain all around. For Sukkot Holiday ideas with children, blessings and more info, you are welcome to click on the HOLIDAF LINK.
