Passover at Ilan Ramon Day School - At IRDS we work hard to fulfill the Mitzvah of Ve higadeta Levinchah (And you shall tell your child the story of the Exodus.) Our curriculum is developed in such a way that gives each grade level the opportunity to learn this holiday s story and customs through varied modalities. I would like to share with you our Passover curriculum. We have a four-year cycle: Year 1- School-wide Seder for grades 1-5 in the Synagogue for students only. We use a school Haggadah. Each grade performs one part of the Seder and acts out different aspects of the holiday. Year 2- An experiential program for grades 1-5 made up of stations to reenact parts of the story and the different steps from the Haggadah. (This is what we will be doing this year, and it will be known as: The Seder Fair ). Year 3- Classroom Seders without parents. Children focus on the meaning of the Haggadah, traditions of Pesach and take leadership roles in leading their own Seders. Year 4- Parents are invited to a classroom Seder. ECE + GK- the children prepare for Passover beginning two weeks before the holiday in daily hands on, sensory experiences: from acting out the Exodus story, to making Haroset/Matzah, to becoming slaves. They also create special ritual items for the Seder table. We culminate with a Seder led by teachers and parents. In addition to the main holiday event at school, and the review of the holiday s traditions, each grade has a distinct focus for their Pessach studies, each year building upon the prior year s learning: 1 st grade acts out the story of the Exodus in Hebrew, and learns all the symbols and order of the Seder. 2 nd grade reflects on the meaning of slavery/freedom in connection to the symbols on the Passover Plate, while reading parts of the Haggadah in Hebrew. 3 UPCOMING EVENTS March 29 5th Grade Colonial Day and Culmination King Trivia Fundraiser at Industry Bar & Grill March 30: E2 Seder, 9:30 a.m. March 31 E3A Seder, 9:30 a.m. April 3 E3B Seder, 9:30 a.m. April 4 E4 Seder, 9:30 a.m. April 5 Gesher/Kindergarten Seder, 8:30 a.m. April 6 4th Grade kibbutz Seder, 8:30 a.m. April 7 Seder Fair 3 rd grade students make personal connections to Arba at Ha Banim (The Four Sons), while reflecting on their own behaviors. 4 th grade reenacts the Seder the way it was celebrated by the Chalutzim on Kibbutz (The pioneers who built the state of Israel). This connects to their yearlong study about Israel. They also learn about the meaning behind the four cups on the table, and why is it that we invite Elijah from all other prophets. 5 th grade takes complete responsibility for setting up, cleaning, preparing, and leading an independent Seder in their classroom. We want to make sure that once our students graduate from IRDS they feel comfortable in leading a Seder on their own. They also learn in detail about the Kashrut laws for Passover and how to Kosher the kitchen for the holiday. To top all of this with some more fun, the 5 th graders had built an outdoor over from bricks and mud, known in Hebrew as a: Taboon. We will all use it tomorrow, as each student will be making his/her own Matzah. Here s to a very happy and meaningful Passover, Bat-hen April Spring Break
