Greetings IRDS Families, On behalf of the Board of Directors of Ilan Ramon Day School I would like to officially welcome all New Families and welcome back all of our Returning Families to what I know will be a fabulous school year. For those of you who may not know The Board of Directors serves as the Governing Arm of the school. The Board focuses on the financial wellbeing, governance, and strategic vision for Ilan Ramon. The Board is made up of a combination of current parents, alumni parents, grandparents, and community members. Our school was founded 25 years ago by a group of individuals who had a vision. This year we will have the chance to express our gratitude to the founding families and celebrate our successes, and our vision for the future together at our GALA.! We will celebrate - 25 years of educating Jewish Children IRDS style - 25 years of a unique and special community - 25 years of kids calling IRDS their 2 nd home and extended family - 25 years of Siddur Ceremonies, Mitzvah Projects and Holiday Celebrations with a heart and soul. 25 years of MAGIC!!! I watched my eldest daughter graduate last year and this year I will watch my second daughter complete her years at Ilan Ramon. This is what I know.. IRDS 5 th grade graduates are not just ready academically for Middle School, but are ready for life. They have been taught to be leaders, they have been taught to speak up for themselves, they have been taught to speak in front of others, but most importantly they have been shown what a community is all about. They learn what it means to be a part of a community and in today s world where people are so busy, I believe this is A TRUE GIFT that each and everyone of us are giving to our kids. 6 Hello Ilan Ramon Family and Friends, Perhaps you have heard about our SCRIP program and have wondered what it is all about. Many of you have ordered regularly, and we thank you for your support of our program! We would LOVE to see more families take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to raise money for our school. IRDS is involved in a Scrip program in which we sell gift cards from a wide range of retailers, restaurants, entertainment companies and so much more, and we earn a percentage on every card we sell! The best part is, participating in this program costs you nothing more than what you would be spending at these retailers! Do you shop at Sprouts Market? Why not buy a Sprouts Scrip card? IRDS will earn 5%! Need school clothes? Why not buy a Children s Place Card? IRDS will earn 12%!! Need a caffeine kick? Get your Starbucks card! IRDS will earn 7%!!! And you pay only the value of the card! It couldn t be easier! Attached is an order form with a complete list of the cards we sell. I will be placing a Scrip order the 1 st week of school. Please fill out the forms, (on the IRDS website and drop them off or mail them with payment to the IRDS office. Once I place the order, turn around is very fast! You may pay by cash, check or credit card (Please note that credit card payments must add a 3% additional surcharge.) Many scrip cards are available year round for a quick gift or night out. Please check in the office to see what is available and to make your purchase. All the Best to you and yours! Megan Akiva (310) meganakiva@hotmail.com Feel free to contact me with any questions!
7 Speech and Language Screening Kinder to 5 th Grade only. By Jody Gould, M.A. C.C.C. Provided by IRDS Wednesday, September 26, 2018 The Speech & Language Screening usually takes place by teacher request, with parental permission. As a parent, you may also directly request screening for students K-5 th Grade only. Students are screened for speech and language, through the use of an elicited screening instrument. They are asked to repeat questions and statements that are said to them. Students typically use their own habitual articulation and language patterns when repeating back the questions and statements. The clinician determines whether the articulation and language structures are within normal limits for the student s age. Parents will be notified of the screening results on a standardized form and are invited to discuss the results with the clinician by telephone. There is no charge for this consultation. Should further therapy be required, Jody Gould M.A.,C.C.C. will provide therapy at school on a weekly basis for articulation and language problems. Therapy times are set by the teacher and therapist, and fees will be discussed at this time. Parents can enroll their children in therapy by contacting Jody Gould by phone (818) or jodygouldspeech@gmail.com. Sign & Return Bottom Portion of Form PARENTS PERMISSION TO ASSESS ASSESSMENT CANNOT PROCEED WITHOUT WRITTEN CONSENT In order for children s speech and language to develop correctly, assistance is sometimes needed. As a professional Speech and Language Specialist, I am able to determine if any problems exist. Your child will be screened on Wednesday, September 26 th, You will be informed of the results. Student Name: DOB: Grade: Rm: Address: Home: ( ) Work: ( ) Cell ( ) Parent Name: Signature of Parent or Legal Guardian Date PLEASE RETURN THIS FORM TO THE SCHOOL OFFICE PRIOR TO THE DAY OF SCREENING

11 new! California Car Seat Law Changes EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1, 2017 NEW ADDITION Starting January 1, 2017, children under 2 years old must be rear facing unless they weigh 40 pounds or more, or are 40 inches tall or more. CURRENT LAW Most children will outgrow an infant seat before age 1 The next step is a convertible car seat. Rear facing is 5 times safer than forward facing. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children ride rear facing to the highest weight or height allowed by the car seat manufacturer. Kaitlyn s Law It s against California law to leave a child who is 6 years of age or younger alone in the car without the supervision of a person at least 12 years old if: 1. The keys are in the ignition or the car is running, or 2. There is a significant risk to the child. Children under age 8 must be buckled into a car seat or booster in the back seat. Children age 8 or older, or who are 4 9 or taller, may use the vehicle seat belt if it fits properly with the lap belt low on the hips, touching the upper thighs, and the shoulder belt crossing the center of the chest. If children are not tall enough for proper belt fit, they must ride in a booster or car seat. Everyone in the car must be properly buckled up. FINES & PENALTIES For each child under 16 who is not properly secured, parents (if in the car) or drivers can be fined more than $500 and get a point on their driving records. Keep your children safe. It s the law! For answers to your child safety seat questions, contact your local health department or visit cdph.ca.gov/vosp.
