Winter, a noted author, shares his experiences on how he came to write his latest novel, "Island Bluffs, which is loosely based on true events and uses LBI as its backdrop. previously been owned by a German spy? Imagine strange happenings occurring in this house that cannot be explained by natural events? And imagine how an impish fertility expert, who is a survivor of the Mengele twin experiments, uses his extraordinary intellect and wealth to devise a grand scheme to alter how anti-semites view Jews? "Island Bluffs" is a story of forgiveness, of understanding the dark side of the human spirit, and plumbs the age-old question: are children and grandchildren accountable for the sins of their parents? It is also a love story. Location based on LBI and Barnegat Bay. In this regard, Moses said that God wants you: [T]o revere the Lord your God, to walk only in His paths, to love Him and to serve your God with all your heart and soul, keeping the Lord's commandments and laws...for good...for the Lord Saturday morning August 8, 2015 9:30 AM Torah Reading Eikev (Deuteronomy
your God is God supreme and Lord supreme, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who shows no favor and takes no bribes, but upholds the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and befriends the stranger...you too must befriend the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt. The wonderful thing here is that God could choose to do anything with His power, and what does He choose to do? God chooses to take care of the least fortunate segments of our society, the orphan, the widow, and the stranger. The message is one of the most beautiful pieces of Torah. No matter how great you are, you must always care for the less fortunate. I imagine that for most of us, with unlimited power, humility and empathy are the hardest emotions to hold on to. Countless books, plays and movies tell stories of power corrupting even the nicest human beings. 7:12-11:25) Here is the portion PARSHAH Haftorah: Isaiah 49:14-51:3 Here is the Haftorah HAFTORAH Saturday evening Drop-In Havdallah 9:00 PM Please help us create a special atmosphere by not using electronic devices (phones, cameras, games etc) in or around the synagogue on Shabbat and Holidays. This week, this piece of text came to life for me in a very powerful way. In what follows, I am changing the names of the people involved. I received a call last Friday from Joan who did not know what to do because Steven, her husband of 50 years, had passed away and, in accordance with Steven's wishes, she sent his body to be cremated. Joan is not Jewish, but her husband was. During the course of their (beautiful) 50 years together, while acknowledging his Jewish roots, Steven did very little to observe his Jewish faith. Indeed, the family mostly celebrated Christian and secular holidays. SHABBAT ON THE BEACH IN LOVELADIES August 14th at 6:00 PM HIGH HOLIDAY SEATS As Steven's health declined over the last few years, Joan decided to place a Mezuzah on the door to the home. After Steven's death, Joan could have simply had him cremated and placed the ashes in a garden. However, she decided that she needed to honor his Jewish tradition. This is when she called me. I met with Joan and Steven's stepdaughter and with his grandchildren and together we mapped out a beautiful memorial service for Steven that would acknowledge his Jewish roots and help to make his memory a blessing. The service was held at the home that Steven and Joan had shared and was attended by about 55 relatives and friends. Though most of those in attendance were not Jewish,
the respect they showed for the Jewish content of the service was an inspiration. After Steven's death Joan had all of the power. She could have ignored Steven's Jewish roots. She was certainly not required to reach out to a Rabbi. But something in her would not allow her to let Steven's Jewish identity die as well. As the text above says: She "walked" in God's paths. Joan became the holy nurturer to a person who could not protect himself. There is no doubt in my mind that the Torah is a guidebook that shows us how to lead holier lives and how to make the world a better place. Joan showed me that one does not have to be Jewish to act Jewish. One need only perform the deeds of loving kindness provided by the Torah. May Steven's memory be for a blessing. May Joan's desire to make sure that Steven's Jewish heritage would be remembered set an example for each of us to look after those less fortunate than us. And may each of us find the time to learn Torah and bring its positive energy to the world. Amen. Believe it or not it is just 5 weeks from Rosh Hashana. JCC member, Susan Shapiro Barash, has written a new novel, "Between the Tides," under the pen name of Susan Marren. Having grown up on LBI, the author understands the allure of the ocean and the rhythms of life at the shore that give rise to summer friendships. The characters in her first novel, "Between the Tides," are based on such a friendship, and illustrate the delicate balance of their rivalry and dependence on each other. Caps are available in the office. $15 each Susan will be at the Ocean County Library, LBI Branch in Surf City for a "Meet the Author" on Monday evening, August 10 at 7:00 PM Resister with the library if you wish to attend (609) 494-2480 GIVING OPPORTUNITIES FILM FUND - NEW!!!
