The Church at Litchfield Park A house of prayer for all people, aspiring to be as inclusive as the love of God

WE HAVE GATHERED AS A FAMILY OF FAITH Third Sunday in Lent March 23, 2014 8:00 a.m. The Church at Litchfield Park, aspiring to be as inclusive as the love of God, welcomes everyone who comes to the doors of this House of Prayer for all People. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. DOXOLOGY No. 815 Beneath the Cross of Jesus No. 320 I take, O cross, thy shadow for my abiding place; I ask no other sunshine than the sunshine of His face; content to let the world go by, to know no gain nor loss, my sinful self my only shame, my glory all the cross. BENEDICTION POSTLUDE Amazing Grace Traditional/Weber MATTHEW 18:21-34 (NIV) Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times? Jesus answered, I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times. Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand bags of gold was brought to him. Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt. At this the servant fell on his knees before him. Be patient with me, he begged, and I will pay back everything. The servant s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go. But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred silver coins. He grabbed him and began to choke him. Pay back what you owe me! he demanded. His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, Be patient with me, and I will pay it back. But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. When the other servants saw what had happened, they were outraged and went and told their master everything that had happened. Then the master called the servant in. You wicked servant, he said, I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. Shouldn t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you? In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed. CONGREGATION PLEASE STAND (AS YOU ARE ABLE) **Assisted Hearing devices and large print hymnals are available for use during traditional services. Please contact an usher if you would like to use one of these. 3

WE HAVE GATHERED AS A FAMILY OF FAITH Third Sunday in Lent March 23, 2014 9:15 a.m. The Church at Litchfield Park, aspiring to be as inclusive as the love of God, welcomes everyone who comes to the doors of this House of Prayer for all People. CHIMES SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS WELCOME, REGISTRATION and ANNOUNCEMENTS PRELUDE I Stand in Awe Mark Altrogge BRINGING IN THE LIGHT CHORAL CALL TO WORSHIP Open the Eyes of My Heart Frager/Sanborn CALL TO WORSHIP: L: The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. P: He does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. L: For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him. P: As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. L: As a father has compassion for his children, so the LORD has compassion for those who fear him. P: Let us give thanks to God for his infinite mercy by forgiving others for their wrongs against us! Amen. (Adapted from Psalm 103) HYMN Beneath the Cross of Jesus No. 320 (Verses 1, 2 & 3) 4

CONFESSION OF THE CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY Prayer of Confession: (In Unison) Heavenly Father, you are gracious and merciful, and you forgive all of our transgressions against you and others. In spite of this, we often have difficulty forgiving those who wrong us. Remind us that the forgiveness you lavish upon us is not something to be harbored; rather, it is given to us so that we might pay it forward to others. Thank you for your forgiveness, even for our unforgiveness. This we pray in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. L: Let us now pray together the prayer our Lord taught us: P: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. The Cross, metaphorically and literally, marks the spot in history of a radical transformation between God and humanity. The earth shook, and the curtain in the temple separating the sacred from the profane was ripped in two. A New Covenant and a New Testament had just begun. But why did God use the Cross? What is Christ s relationship to the Tree? Can we also carry our cross? Join us on this spiritual odyssey, and let s explore the wonders of the most incredible event in HISstory, and, perhaps, in our story as well. 7
