(Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-8). Psalm The one who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord (Psalm 15). Second Reading Religion that is pure is this: to care for orphans and widows in their affliction (James 1:17-18, 21b-22, 27). Gospel This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me (Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved. THE HIGHEST LAW From time to time, newspapers and magazines will offer, as an item of filler, various laws that are still on the books but seem silly to us in our day and age. In one California city, it is illegal to have two indoor bathtubs in one house. Clean water, a precious commodity when the law was written, is now readily available, so the law seems silly. But the human value of protecting and preserving precious resources is still around, evident in many conservation laws that seem sensible to us. So it is with the laws of religious tradition. What Jesus scorns today is others attitude toward ritual laws, an attitude that becomes nearly idolatrous when laws are observed for their own sake. Jesus teaches that observation of external ritual laws is of value only when they are emblems of our internal disposition toward the will of God. Our whole lives must follow the one ultimate law of God: to love God completely and to love neighbor entirely. Roman Catholicism is a tradition rich with customs, traditions, and even laws. As we continue to listen to the voice of Christ, we must always look into our own hearts and underneath our ritual practices to make sure that love of God and love of neighbor are what we prize above all. First 22nd Sunday of in Advent Ordinary - December Time September 3, 2017 2, 2018 Cheers! Happy Labor Day weekend! I hope that many of you are able to enjoy this three-day weekend. As for me, I m looking forward to Wednesday, September 5, when 35 of us (mostly parishioners) leave for a two-week trip to Italy. It has been my practice since the mid 1970 s to sponsor a group trip; our group size usually runs in the range of 30-40 persons. We have travelled all over Europe as well as Israel, Jordan, China, the former Soviet Union, Australia and several cruises in the Caribbean, the Mexican Riviera (west coast of Mexico) and to Alaska. Normally, I had a pattern of going every two years -- in the odd-numbered years. Thus, my last big group trip was in 2015 to Israel. After that trip, our fund raising was going very well for the new church and I knew that soon we would actually reach our Capital Campaign goal and begin construction itself; so I skipped 2017 as a group travel year and moved it to this year, 2018. We are going to Italy and will spend time in the following places: Venice, Florence, Assisi, Rome and the Amalfi Coast (Sorrento, Capri and Pompeii). It should be a wonderful trip! I might even try to send a photo or two to be put on our website and/or APP. While in Rome, we will be attending the Papal Audience on Wednesday, September 12. Earlier that morning, I will say Mass at the tomb of St. John XXIII (whose relic is in our altar). I will also be saying Masses in many other of the magnificent churches in the cities we are visiting. Be assured that at each Mass I say, all of you, the wonderful parishioners of Holy Spirit will be remembered. And, of course, we will be enjoying the fabulous Italian cuisine for 14 days! I ve said that you cannot have a bad meal in Italy! My passion is pasta: oftentimes, instead of ordering a meat dish, I will order doppia pasta, that is a double portion of the same pasta or two different pastas. Mmmm!! I hope that all the walking we do will burn off some of the calories I m bound to put on! While I m gone, the parish will be in the capable hands of Fr. Joe Annese and Fr. Tom Gross. Fr. Tom will be handling all of the sick calls -- those seeking the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. Every once in a while, someone will ask me if I m going to get an associate pastor (technically, called parochial vicar). My answer: with the two best retired priests I could ever hope to find, awesome deacons, a fabulous staff and wonderful volunteers, we re doing just fine. Please keep us in your prayers that our travels be safe, that we all stay healthy, that we enjoy every single minute and finally that we return home in good spirits. Arrivederci! Page 4
