Council 9884 s 25 th Anniversary Celebration It is the Silver Anniversary for Council 9884 and we will be celebrating it on August 10 th. Distinguished guests have been invited and much planning has been done. Our Council has always been an active council and the leaders who formed our council are one reason why. Come and join us as we celebrate 25 years for service and prepare for the next 25 years. The tab is being picked up by the council. so please plan to attend. Oktoberfest and a Halloween Party Two events are coming back after a one year hiatus. Oktoberfest will be here on Saturday, October 19 th. We will have great food, music and fun. Our Halloween Party with the parking lot Trunk-r-Treat for the kids will be on Saturday, October 26th. This is a great time for the family with an adult party with dancing and spooky costumes to finish. SK Steven Robillard, Grand Knight, Council 9884 Insider s Perspective from the Inside Guard Charity, Unity, Fraternity; these are the first three principles of the Knights of Columbus. These are the principles that motivate a Knight into action. Webster s defines Fraternity as the quality or state of being brothers. Each month you read articles in this Newsletter that I publish about the fun and the work your brother Knights did and the graces and blessings of works of Charity, achieved by the Unity of teamwork. This Newsletter is distributed to 248 members of Council 9884 plus some dignitaries and many Lady Knights. On the first Thursday of each month we hold the Council Business Meeting. That meeting and the social gathering afterward is a wonderful example of Fraternity in action. As Inside Guard for the Council, I m assured of meeting and greeting all men attending the Council s Business Meetings. I look forward to meeting more of my brothers in the Council at a meeting. Please, consider attending a meeting sometime soon and enjoy the fraternal gathering of men to work in unity on acts of charity. I Admissions Committee We still are in need of THREE Knights to serve on this committee, which screens applications and interviews candidates. If any Brother is interested, PoC: Boyd Burris, Admissions Chairman burrispb1549@att.net, 214-507-8420 or 817-430-8406 Brothers, we need a few good men to help at these upcoming events. I pray you will be able to answer the call to one or more PoC: Louis Hernandez, Community Activity Director August 10 8-11AM Back to School setup August 31 8-11AM Back to School teardown Say Thanks to the men and women of the Police, Fire & EMT at the First Responders Appreciation Lunch Saturday, September 14 in the CLC It is time to celebrate a significant milestone in Council 9884 s history. In the summer of 1988, an energetic and committed handful of men set out to found a Knights of Columbus council at St. Philip. Since that summer, the men of Council 9884 have accomplished an excellent history of charity, service, and fraternalism in our area and in the state of Texas. We will celebrate our proud 25-year history on Saturday, August 10, shortly after the conclusion of the 4:00PM Mass. The location where dinner will be held is still being worked out. Don Corleone made us an offer we couldn t refuse, so we re making last minute changes. So what else is new! Longtime members can reminisce about all we ve done as a council; newer members can gain a sense of the outstanding legacy of Council 9884 over the last 25 years; It will be a great time for all! Our evening of celebration will be filled with many surprises and festivities, special recognitions, past and present dignitaries including Past Grand Knights, a catered dinner, music, dancing, and entertainment. Childcare will be available. Dress up, bring your wife or girlfriend and enjoy this celebration, gratis! (in another word, free.) Please RSVP to Sean McIntyre at 817-996-0891 or email to smcintyre@alumni.nd.edu PoC: Sean McIntyre, Council Activity Director. 2

August 2013 Knight of the Month This month we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Knights of Columbus Council 9884. For a quarter century, the council has been led by a man we respectfully acknowledge as our Grand Knight. According to the Grand Knight s handbook: The Grand Knight is the highest ranking officer of his council and is responsible for observing the laws of the Order and his council. The office of Grand Knight is one that is rich in opportunities to serve his fellow Knights and to lead his council in service to family, Church and community. Additionally, the Grand Knight must ensure the membership, insurance and programming growth of his council and the involvement of all its members. It is the Grand Knight s obligation to inspire mutual cooperation and voluntary service among the officers and members. That s quite a list of items to have on your to do list, for two years. Therefore, I would like to recognize our current Grand Knight, Steve Robillard, as well as all the Past Grand Knights who have led this council in the pursuit of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism as Council 9884 s Knight of the Month for August, 2013. On July 16, 1988, Leo Hanus took charge of the newly chartered Council 9884. Since then, the following men have committed themselves to fulfill the previously mentioned to do list. Leo Hanus 1988 1989 Pete Keeley 1989 1991 Ron Gourlie 1991 1992 Michael A. McLaughlin 1992 1994 Michael L. McLaughlin 1994 1996 Boyd Burris 1996 1998 Grant Beagles 1998 2000 Joe Kuzio 2000 2001 Mike McCardle 2001 2004 Gary Osborne 2004 2006 Bill Miller 2006 2008 Joe Walker 2008 2010 Bob LaCroix 2010 2012 Steve Robillard 2012 Present I thank each and every one of these men for their service to our council and our parish and congratulate them on being our August 2013 Knight of the Month. SK Eddie Martinez Deputy Grand Knight Brother Knights First an important admin note so I don t bury it in this article the banks are getting very picky about checks to business accounts being written more exactly to the business name. We ve had some rejections of checks written to St. Philip, a generic KofC, and sometimes even KofC 9884 Financial Secretary. So, your new Financial Secretary, Mike McArdle, and I would appreciate all checks made payable to Knights of Columbus Council 9884 or KofC Council 9884 Now, on to new business. I wanted to give everyone an end of Fiscal Year/Fraternal Year update regarding our budget. Overall, we re in great shape financially. There are also a few events that have to be reconciled financially as well as a few payables (like scholarships) that we re committed to against last year s budget that I ve taken into account. So, for a general accounting in round numbers: Receivables (Dues, Casino Nights, Pancake Breakfasts, Knight Moves, CheerFests, etc.) $27,900 ($18,200 revenue + $9,700 dues) $33,000 budget Expenses (Supreme/State assessments/charity, other charity, Admin, Scholarship, our events) $24,500 $32,400 budget Net $ 3,400 And, just so you know our events referenced above included: 9/11 BBQ honoring our police, fire, and other emergency personnel, SPY kick-off cookout, Christmas Party, Valentines Dinner Dance, Fish Fry, Founder s Day, and Softball Team, as well as supporting 2 Seminarians and flags for Eagle Scouts; and this summary includes $2000 into the Hall Account How did we do this? Well, we did watch our money closely, but primarily we also were well under budget for Fun Stuff, Mother s Day Flowers, charitable giving was mostly limited to State Charities, and without an old U- Haul pulling the casino trailer, we saved there all in all making up for a little bit lower than budgeted expenses and putting us in a good position to start 2013-2014. Final note, FYI, not in the budget, we did make a capital expenditure on a new trailer. We authorized $10,000 to come out of the Hall Account, actually spent about $7,000 of which $2,000 was in the budget...so we took out only $5,000 from the Hall Account. PoC: Bob Dubek, Worthy Treasurer 3

Brother Knights and Fellow Golfers, The 39th Annual Johnny Lopez Knights of Columbus State Golf Tournament is being hosted by the Texas State Council and the Poth, Floresville and Pleasanton Knights of Columbus Councils. The tournament this year will be held the weekend of September 27, 28 & 29, 2013 at two different golf courses, one being River Bend Golf Club in Floresville, TX and the second being Pleasanton Country Club in Pleasanton, TX. River Bend Golf Club will host the Friday scramble tournament, which has a 1:00pm shotgun start. The Saturday and Sunday individual tournament play will be played at both the River Bend course and the Pleasanton C. C. course, with an 8:00 Am., shotgun start both mornings. Within you will find a link to the tournament entry form. Be sure to complete all the information requested, including council and membership numbers. Incomplete forms will delay your entry. For those of you who may have not ever played or have not played in one of K of C State Golf Tournaments within the past five (5) years, to establish a handicap for our tournament you will need to submit a copy of your club handicap card or two score cards from two separate rounds of golf on a 18-hole golf course. For those of you who have played within the past five years we will have a handicap on record for you. The entry fee for the scramble is $70.00 per golfer and the entry fee for the individual two day tournament is $130.00 per golfer, and if you sign up to play all three days your entry fee will be $165.00. Your entry fee must accompany the registration form. Please make checks payable to: K of C State Athletic Fund Player registration will be held at the River Bend Golf Course in Floresville, and starts at 9:00am Friday morning continuing until 6:00pm Friday evening. Late registration will be held at both Golf Courses on Saturday morning starting at 7:00am until 7:30am. Being a smaller community, hotel/motel rooms are not as plentiful. However we have a small block of rooms at the locations found in the link below. (So you will need to book your rooms as soon as possible!) Click for Lodging Info off KofC Website: http://www.tkofc.org/uploads/39th_annual_johnny_lopez_2013_knigh ts_of_columbus_state_golf_tournament_hotel_information.pdf I have great expectations of thrilling times coming up for Council 9884. here are five weekends this August, so we will celebrate that special fifth Saturday with a trip to the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington for game against the Minnesota Twins on Saturday, August 31 st, with a scheduled 7:05PM start, (subject to change by Rangers management.) We plan to hold a tailgate party both prior to and after the game. We will sit in the first 3 rows of Section 206, shown in blue in the plan below. Tickets are $30/person. They will be for sale at the Council Meetings on August 8 and at the Pancake Breakfast on August 11. We ll keep track of who s going, and when the tickets are gone, we ll let all know who is going. Make your own transportation arrangements with each other. Next, as our Grand Knight mentioned in his report, we are bringing back Oktoberfest on October 19. Look for the first annual Oktoberfest Raffle. This will be a parish wide event and should be a great time! Keep an eye out for details to follow! The last event I want to announce is our Council s first Art Auction, tentatively scheduled for Saturday, December 7. This event has the possibility of growing to a parishcommunity wide event. Full details are being worked out right now! Call to mind that promise you made, many years ago, about sharing your time, talent and treasure. Be fraternal and share some time. God Bless.
