1 A NEW SPIRIT OF COOPERATION WITH OTHER MINISTRIES One of the directions that I have pushed for is that our council be more inclusive with the other ministries of St. Philip, as well as other Catholic Churches. Our Lady of Lebanon Catholic Church is a great example. We have always helped with their Food Festival that occurs on the first weekend in October. Our Lady of Lebanon also came to our aid when we needed a place for our 25 th Anniversary Dinner. We are also trying to help them by having a Casino Night next year. A huge thank you goes out to Phil DelVecchio, an active Knight who has been a great liaison to OLL for us. The Woman s Club is another group that we engaging with on mutual efforts. They helped serve the food at our 25 th Anniversary dinner and they are taking an active part in selling tickets to the Oktoberfest Dinner, as well as the Art Auction in December. Thank you! There are practical benefits by this new cooperation. The first is it confronts the Us vs. Them mentality that can insidiously occur. Also, cooperative efforts open up the ability to do bigger events and reach more people in the Council s parishes. I am very excited at this new cooperative spirit and I hope that you will see the difference too! 2 Deputy Grand Knight Report In this month s newsletter you won t find the Knight of the Month. I will announce the Knight of the Month at our next business meeting. In this way, the Knight worthy of this honor won t know of it until attending that meeting, that he is being recognized. I do want to express my thanks to every member of The Great Council 9884, whether you have been a member for years or a member for a few months. The council has accomplished a great deal for twenty five years and most of you will agree that we seem to have been recently injected with new energy. Our members are everywhere, doing it all. We re selling tickets for Our Lady of Lebanon Food Festival, selling our raffle tickets for the Holy Land trip, and selling tickets for Oktoberfest. Now we are getting support from other groups instead of competing with them. We just had a successful Pancake Breakfast, the same day that a significant number of Knights participated in the ACTS retreat. We are trying things we have not done before, the Art Auction is just one, and I am sure many more new ideas are yet to come. We have a new casino trailer, woohoooo! This year s First Responder had a first! It was the first time we held this luncheon in honor of firefighters and policemen that we ran out of food so many first responders came by! Isn t it great? It was very well attended and well planned; Father McDaniel stopped by to thank the police and fire fighters and had lunch with us. We are sponsoring a future priest, seminarian Tyler Dubek, the son of our very own Treasurer, Bob Dubek. Tyler also is a member of our Council. Bill Miller, Membership Director, is doing an awesome job, it seems like we are getting new members every month. It is an honor and a privilege to be a member of this group of men who meet in the pursuit of Charity. SK Eddie Martinez Deputy Grand Knight Brother Knights, The Oktoberfest takes place Saturday, October 19 th from 5:00pm to 10:00pm. The Lady Knights and the Women s Club are co-hosting this event with Council The menu includes German sausage, sauerkraut, grilled onions & peppers, potato salad and dessert. There will be soft drinks and beer. Activities include games, music, karaoke, face painting, a potato salad contest, a cake-walk and the Holy Land raffle drawing. Our Sisters in Christ from The Lady Knights and Women s Club will provide volunteers to help with many activities to support this event. I m looking for many Brother Knights to help with all of the activities and hope you have the opportunity to read and respond to Notice sent out by our Grand Knight Dr. Steven Robillard. Admission to the Oktoberfest is $ 5.00 per individual and $ per family. Remember, a Holy Land raffle ticket includes one free admission to the Oktoberfest and two Holy Land raffle tickets can be combined for a family admission to the Oktoberfest. So please plan on attending and helping with the parish wide event that promises fun and camaraderie for the entire Saint Philip parish community. The Knights & Lady Knights Halloween Party takes place on Saturday, October 26 th, from 6:00 to 10:00PM. The Lady Knights and the Knights of Columbus are co-hosting this event. As there is a parish wide Trunk or treat event on Sunday, October 27 th, our Halloween party will not include one. This will be a great time for the entire family with a kid s party, adult party & dance and a costume contest to finish the evening. Admission to the Halloween Party is free to those 5 and under, $ 5.00 for those 6 16, $ for those 17 and over or $ per family. Once again I m looking for Brother Knights to help with the activities and hope you had the opportunity to read and respond to Notice sent out by our Grand Knight Dr. Steven Robillard. Please mark your calendars for these events. Your Brother in Christ, David Jones, , DavidEJones@verizon.net Family Activity Director 2

4 The following text excerpts and pictures were originally published in the Sep/Oct issue of North Texas Catholic. Stories and Photos by Kathy Cribari Hamer.Used with permission. LJ: Deacon Khoi Tran was the seminarian who was the who was assigned by the Diocese to our Council for us to serve him as part of the Vocational Program. These stories and photos are about the culmination of his study to become a priest, Vietnamese Martyrs Parish, the largest capacity church in the Diocese of Fort Worth, and among the largest capacity Vietnamese Parishes in the United States, was completely filled. There were well-wishers, classmates, deacons, seminarians, and more than 50 brother priests. All were gathered to celebrate the day James Wilcox and Khoi Tran had waited for, not only through years of study, but for most of their lives. Presiding at the June 29 Liturgy of Ordination was Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller, metropolitan archbishop of San Antonio, who expressed his gratitude for the invitation to preside at this ordination of two brothers in Christ. I have been following closely the developments of your diocese since Bishop Vann was asked to go to Orange County, the archbishop said, and I can tell you that Monsignor Steve Berg has done tremendous work to keep the unity and the proclamation of the faith through these past few months. He is a good priest of Christ. He has served you well. The ordination liturgy began after the Gospel was proclaimed, when the two candidates were called forth and presented to the ordinary. Most Reverend Father, Holy Mother Church asks you to ordain these our brothers to the responsibility of the priesthood, Msgr. Berg pronounced, and Archbishop Garcia-Siller asked in reply, Do you know them to be worthy? Msgr. Berg, answered, After inquiry among the Christian people and upon the recommendation of those responsible, I testify that they have been found worthy. Relying on the help of the Lord God and our Savior Jesus Christ, the Archbishop concluded, we choose these men, our brothers, for the Order of the Priesthood. It was a humbling moment, Fr. Wilcox said. I could feel the Holy Spirit influencing my heart. I knew it was beginning. Then we each knelt before the archbishop and placed our hands in his. The usual pledge would have been, Do you promise obedience to me and my successors? But in our case, because we are without a bishop, the archbishop asked, Do you promise obedience to the ordinary? I was getting emotional at that time, Fr. Tran said. I felt unworthy of this amazing wonder and love, and that God had led me to be there. I cried at that moment. I felt God s love for me in spite of my unworthiness. In Deacon Khoi Tran s journey to the priesthood, he s learned to follow God s plan, not his own My personality type is I am a very organized person. I like to organize. I like to plan things. And yet, for most of Deacon Khoi Tran s life, he has been encountering and enduring events that were unorganized, and usually not the result of a plan. In 2007, when he was discerning between the Diocese of Dallas and the Diocese of Fort Worth for his vocation path, he knew more about Dallas, because he had been a member of the Redemptorist order. But, he said, I had heard good things about the Diocese of Fort Worth the great bishop we had, Bishop Kevin Vann and then the fraternity among the priests, and seminarians. So that attracted me. I prayed to God. I said, God! Father, this is what I am going to do. I am going to give both vocation directors a call and I ll leave it in your hands. Whoever calls me back first, I will join. Father Kyle Walterscheid [then Fort Worth diocesan Vocations director] called me back right away. And then I said, Okay, God, that s your will. 4

13 I was born to Robert and Sandra Dubek in Bethesda, Maryland, on September 12, 1991, and I quickly became accustomed to the Dubek lifestyle of moving around the country with the Air Force. With four siblings (two older sisters, a younger sister, and a twin brother), it was crowded at times, but we were all greatly blessed with having each other and many opportunities wherever we went. This past May, I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry, and I will be entering the seminary as a pre-theologian to begin a seven year process of formation. I thank you for any and all prayers your support is greatly appreciated! Tyler Seven years ago, my father retired from the Air Force and after a short excursion to North Carolina, we ended up in Flower Mound. I finished up my last three years of high school at Flower Mound High School and headed to college at Kansas State University to study biochemistry with plans to go to medical school. While at Kansas State, I became really involved at the St. Isidore s Catholic Student Center, serving in various liturgical ministries, participating in Bible studies, volunteering for many activities and making great friends. With the great environment there, I was able to discern a call to the seminary, where I am excited to prepare for, God willing, ordination to the priesthood. I began my application to the Diocese of Fort in September 2012, and on December 6, I was formally accepted by our diocese for sponsorship as a seminarian. I started study in philosophy at Holy Trinity Seminary at the University of Dallas on August 26 th. Story was originally published in St. Philip the Apostle bulletin, September 1, Used with permission. You re already a Knight answering a call to serve. Are you serving your church? All of the parish s more than 30 Ministries will have representatives in the CLC to help you learn how you can help others in your community including, of course, St. Philip parish. Tommy Meyer brought out his grilling equipment and we provided a feast to about 130 youth and parent volunteers. We received a loud and enthusiastic thank you from the youth that night and our contribution to their new year of religious and community formation was a big success! We had many great volunteers who helped set up, cook, serve, and clean up - many that helped with more than one phase! 15 Brother Knights, August and September are busy months for all of us starting with kids going back to school. We had a great turnout for the CCA Back to School Setup. Quite a few Knights showed up to assist in building up the shelves and were able to complete the task in less than 2 hours. Thank you so much for your assistance: Juan Sandoval, Pete Whelan, Sean McIntyre with Kate and Abby, Gregg Schoenrade and James, David Jones, Wayne LaMothe, Steven Robillard, Kevin Treadway and Courtney, Chuck Berneche, Pete Hatton, Gary Marco and a handful of others. Your combined help allowed the CCA to assist those in our community who otherwise may not have had the means to purchase school supplies for their children. The teardown of the shelves was just a few weeks later and again the Knights showed up to help. Thank you to: Steven Robillard, Pete Whelan, Ken Groh, Greg Walterscheid, Bob Dubek, Damian Onyekwere, Wayne LaMothe, Bob LaCroix, Rich Lubke, Kenneth Wischnewsky, Louis Hernandez, and others not listed.. The CCA Breakdown was in record time, or should I say we had not done it so quickly and safely ever before. First Responder Appreciation Luncheon in remembrance of 9/11 was a success. Invitations to the luncheon were hand delivered to the Fire and Police Chiefs from Lewisville, Flower Mound, Highland Village and Double Oak. Many of the first responders on duty were able to make it out and I m proud to say the parking lot at St Philip at one point had 6 Fire trunks, 3 ambulances and about 8 Police cars at the same time. A Special Thank you to Eddie Martinez, Bill Miller, Boyd Burris, LJ, Danny Apodaca, Bob Forsyth, Juan Sandoval, Louis Hernandez, Roy Morisak, Ken Wischnewsky, Gary Marco and others not listed. If your name was not on this list it was not intentional and my thanks goes out to you as your help was instrumental in making these function successful. Also, Thank you Lady Knights for your assistance is helping decorate, on hand was Nellie Apodaca with her Naomi and Linda Woosley. We always need a lady s touch to make our functions look better. In closing I want to remind you that the next Christmas Setup of Shelves will be the Saturday BEFORE Thanksgiving. The toy pickup will start the day after Thanksgiving. God Bless you all for everything you do for our community. May He continue to Bless your family and friends and allow you to give of your time and talents for the good of our Church and our Community.
