DOXOLOGY No. 815 Jesus Calls Us No. 592 Jesus calls us; by thy mercies, Saviour, may we hear Thy call. Give our hearts to Thine obedience, serve and love Thee best of all. BENEDICTION POSTLUDE Alleluia! Sing to Jesus Dix/Prichard MARK 8:27-36 (NIV) Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, Who do people say I am? They replied, Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets. But what about you? he asked. Who do you say I am? Peter answered, You are the Messiah. Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him. He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. Get behind me, [adversary]! he said. You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns. Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? CONGREGATION PLEASE STAND (AS YOU ARE ABLE) Assisted Hearing devices and large print hymnals and bulletins are available for use during services. Please contact an usher if you would like to use one of these. 3

P: As we unite in Christ, we unite together to follow Him as our Lord and to respond to the prompting of His Spirit within us. L: This calling is not only for each of us, but for all of us, to respond together to the Holy Spirit as our guide. P: May we together as God s people hear, understand, and follow God s leading in Christ. HYMN Jesus Calls Us No. 592 (Verses 1-3) PRAYER OF THE CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY (In Unison) Dear God, we thank you for the work you have accomplished in our church over the past 80 years in this community. Help us to faithfully discern and fulfill the calling of God upon this generation under the leadership and power of Christ Jesus our Lord. 4

L: Let us now pray together the prayer that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ taught us: P: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Studying the scriptures/text in context will also include exploring a variety of different lenses: historical, literary, linguistic, visual, cultural, and geographical. After we finish exploring the importance of studying the scriptures/text in context, we will spend several weeks learning about Paul s missionary journeys and the beginning of the Christian church in Pisidia Antioch, Colossae, Laodicea, Sardis, Pergamum, Philadelphia, Smyrna, Thyatira, and Ephesus. I am absolutely thrilled about exploring the scriptures together with you this year having just returned from walking the text in context (Turkey). We want to join you on the path to healing by offering a grief support group beginning Sunday, October 7 from 11:45-12:45 in the Fireside Room North. We will meet for six weeks on the following dates: October 7, 14, 21, & 28, November 11 & 18. We plan on using a compassionate resource called Traveling Through Grief: Learning to Live Again After the Death of a Loved One as a guide to help you find your road to recovery. If you do not already have a copy of this book, copies will be available free of charge on the first day we gather. If you have any questions please call the church office at (623) 935-3411 or speak with Leanne or Pastor Lynne. 9
