Dear Parishioners, A NOTE FROM FATHER Our sympathy to the families and friends of Doris Weber and Francis Hunts Willaert. May their souls, and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace. Congratulations to our First Communicants who will receive our Lord for the first time this weekend. Their joy and excitement ought to be ours, each and every time we receive the Eucharist. May the Eucharist Transform them, and each of us, a little more like Christ each time! As I have been reflecting in my personal prayer and study several times already this Easter season, there is a profound connection between these first two paragraphs. The Eucharist unites us to Christ and each other. The communion we have is with Him and His Church, and that Church is both visible (the one here on earth) and invisible (in heaven and in purgatory). Some have even named these parts of the church as the Church Militant (as in we on earth still wage the war against vice, sin and Satan), the Church Triumphant (those in heaven have won the battle and are resting with God), and the Church Penitent or Suffering (those in purgatory being purified of their sins). But there is something else about this role of the Eucharist in making the Church - it is a physical presence! Christ gives Himself as food and drink, and that involves our bodies. We as human beings are body and soul, and salvation involves both body and soul. Just as Christ was raised from the tomb, so, too, shall we, be raised body and soul. Death is not the freeing of the soul from the body, but the separation of the two (and that is not good in and of itself, not to mention the loss of a loved one), but the our resurrection is the reunion of both integral parts of us. Yes, the bodily Resurrection of Christ prefigures and foretells our resurrection in Him, too. The Eucharist reminds us of this, as each time we receive Him, we receive a pledge of the resurrection. With that in mind, how can we come to the Lord so casually? ~ In Christ, Fr. Todd JOHN IRELAND NEWS www.churchofstpeter.org/ji We are a Catholic community welcoming students of all faiths, devoted to Gospel Values, Academic Excellence, and Christian Service. www.churchofstpeter.org 3rd Sunday of Easter 3
