Challahs on LBI Sea Glass People Celebrate at the JCC Documents & Links REFLECTIONS FROM RABBI JACK Rabbi Jack Friedman JCC of LBI Spiritual Leader The Kotzer Rebbe taught that "the only whole heart is the one that has been broken." According to this teaching, one cannot come close to God unless one has been broken. If so, then what is it that that brings the individual to God's healing? Some will say that it is confronting death; facing the angel of death. But it is more than just the experience of facing life's limits that brings healing. It is possible that God reveals the divine force more strongly to those in need of healing. Or perhaps those in need of healing are more open to God's presence. To be sure, we are all in need of God's healing. And although we prefer not to take this path toward God, illness makes aware of the imperfection in the world and the reality of living. According to one of the rabbis, "Suddenly God seems closer because we are sensitive to God's presence and our illness." Certainly we will all be faced with illness in our lives - whether it is a serious illness of our own or the illness of someone we know and love. It is then that we will have to come face to face with God. But as The Kotzer Rebbe has taught, it is only in the brokenness that we can discover our whole self.
