Meet our new Pastor I grew up in Apalachin, NY (just west of Binghamton) and graduated from Vestal High School. After graduation, I spent one year at the United States Air Force Academy Prep School before being accepted to the Air Force Academy the following year. I was a recruited swimmer and swam during my four years at the Academy. I graduated in 1986 and spent the next six years serving in various locations around the world. I left active duty in 1992 and worked in a couple of different jobs before I started my own business here in Syracuse. It was during this time that I discerned my vocation to the priesthood and entered St. Mary's seminary in 1995. I was ordained in 2001 and began my priesthood as an associate at Holy Family before being transferred to St. Matthew's in East Syracuse. In 2003 the Bishop appointed me Pastor of Holy Family where I spent the last 12 years. I am thankful the Bishop has given me the opportunity to serve this great parish and I look forward to getting to know the good folks of Sacred Heart Peace, Fr. Prior Council Family Picnic On Thursday, August 27, the council will hold its annual family picnic. Families (your children and grand children are all welcome) and possible future Knights are invited to attend. Since this is our annual family picnic, there will be no charge for the dinner. Attendees are asked to bring a dish http://www.kofc10904.org/ 2
to pass while the Council will supply the meat, bread, drinks and dessert. There will be no council meeting on August 27th. Any Council business will be conducted in a combined officers and council meeting on August 20th. Council Officers Before our July 23rd Council meeting, the 2015-2016 Columbian Year officers were installed by District Deputy, Ed Smith, at the Pavilion behind Sacred Heart Church. Following the installation, the council held a BBQ and our usual monthly meeting. Sustaining Fund - Seminarian Support The Sustaining Fund is a dedicated Fund for the sole purpose of supporting those committed to dedicating their lives to God and in turn to us. Last year contributions totaled $4100. Our commitment last year was $1000 to the Bishop's Burse, in support of the education of seminarians and we allocated up to $3000 for three seminarians' out of pocket expenses while in school. This year we have also committed to support 3 seminarians and a monetary contribution to the Bishops Burse. Our goal this Columbian Year (July 2015 to June 2016) is $4000. The dollars we raise in the Sustaining Fund releases monies that we have raised in various fundraisers for the undertaking of the councils charitable activities. http://www.kofc10904.org/ 3
If you decide to join in supporting our seminarians, you may make a single payment or as several have done, make periodic payments over the balance of the Columbian Year. Fred Fietkiewicz is our Sustaining Fund Chairman. If you have any questions, or if you wish to make a donation, please contact Fred. (phone 698-4343 or ffred11@msn.com) Save ARound Books Our Council will kick off the sale of the 2016 Save ARound book at the New York State Fair on Friday, September 4th. Last year we raised over $1000 for one days work at the fair. We initiated the use of a Prize Wheel last year giving prizes to everyone who wanted to spin the wheel. This was a tremendous success. We will be needing volunteers for the fair. We will be needing 3 two member teems to work the fair. Please contact Gary Natali to volunteer. (phone 436-5204) Latter in November we will begin our largest fund raiser by selling Save ARound books at Destiny. We will need many volunteers. The more volunteers, the less work each volunteer does. Gary Natali will be setting up a calendar for those volunteers latter in November. We will advise you further at a latter date as to our schedule at Destiny. Planned Parenthood By now everyone is probably aware of the video of the Planned Parenthood (PP) doctor/executive who was caught discussing the sale of aborted baby body parts and tissue. The sales discussed are illegal and prolife organizations have publicized that this was an ongoing practice of PP but this accusation has been denied by The PP organization. There is now a 2nd video where another PP executive has been caught in the act of "haggling" over the price of human aborted baby parts in a casual manner while at restaurant luncheon engagement. This shows that the first video was not a fluke and that PP should be investigated and public funding of PP should be terminated. In both videos the PP executive indicate that the doctors will alter the type of abortion procedure so that the http://www.kofc10904.org/ 4
body parts to be harvested are not damaged. The PP executive in this 2nd video even indicates that abortion procedure agreed to by the patient will be altered without the knowledge of the patient so that the targeted baby body parts are not damaged. I'm sure there are many prospective acceptable healthcare providers who could provide women with the healthcare that PP claims to provides in addition to their abortion services. As could be expected the mainstream media has only provided a "by the way" mention of the PP videos and up to now have not played the videos on air. What little coverage provided was preempted by the statement that the video was made by an anti-abortion activist group. More airtime was provided for the defense of PP by their CEO. As Catholic gentlemen and Knights of Columbus members I urge everyone to contact your Federal and State legislators and demand an investigation of PP and the defunding their organization. Please keep up to date on pro-life issues at the following websites: WWW.NCHLA.ORG WWW.NYSCATHOLIC.ORG George Metz Culture of Life Chair Recruiting As Knights we need to provide practical Catholics with the opportunity to participate in a fraternal organization. Sometimes recruiting may seem difficult. However it can be easy, just by asking a friend or relative to join the Knights. Many potential Knights haven't joined the Knights just because they were never asked. The Council will have recruiting drives at various times of the year. Our last recruiting drive was July 11 and July 12th before and after each mass. Following the recruiting drive, the council held a first degree on July 25th, at which time four Catholic men became new Knights. Our next member drive will be September 12th and 13th. Brother Knights are requested to assist In all drives after and before each mass. If you can identify a potential new Knight, please advise Tony Mele at 766-7073. http://www.kofc10904.org/ 5
Listening Session Brother Knights, You and/or your spouse are invited to participate in a listening session with our new Sacred Heart Church pastor - Fr Richard P. Prior. We are scheduled for 7 PM on Wednesday August 12, 2015 at our home located at 6243 Hessler Farm Path in the Crossings neighborhood off Thompson Road in Cicero. Fr Prior s intent is to have a small group of Sacred Heart Church parishioners meet "to help determine where the Holy Spirit is leading us. Father will lead us in a program of questions that will take no more than an hour. This will provide input to the parish Finance Committee, Pastoral Council, and Fr Prior to help them prioritize where they need to go. It is also another way for Father to get to know his parishioners. Please contact me or Mary Jane by return email or phone (288-4008) as soon as possible so we know who is coming. Ed Szczesniak Benefits Corner Congratulations to the First Degree Team for an outstanding presentation of the First Degree on July 25th. The Lessons taught in this Degree were brought out in a way that would have made Father McGivney very proud. My congratulations to Brother John Neri, Brother Bernie Fabian, Brother David Snyder and Brother James Dispenza on taking their First Degree. They will make a great addition to the Council and I know they will get a warm reception when they attend their next meeting. http://www.kofc10904.org/ 6
